Good evening everyone, I recently read that the Red Sox sent Salem righty Nefi Ogando to the Phillies to obtain utility man John McDonald (who is now playing for his fourth team this season). I was just wondering what we were giving up to get McDonald and was wondering if anybody had more information on Ogando, I've heard of him before, but I haven't been able to find much about his pitching online. Anybody have any additional info and what he projects to be?

Have to question the necessity of the deal, even if the team didn't give up a real prospect for him. Holt is capable of playing in a backup role that will not require him to come up to the plate more than 2-3 times per week at the most anyway and is 12 years younger. This is baffling.

I guess we could redirect this thread to more about discussing the trade rather than how Ogando projects.

Peter Gammons ? @pgammo Once asked HOF Robbie Alomar who he best shortstop he ever played with. Ripken? Vizquel? "No doubt," Alomar answered, "John McDonald."

Hey Chris, Didn't realize his defense actually portrayed as that good and looked it up myself after posted and then saw it on the twitter feeds you guys were posting here.. Now see he's only making 1.5m this year and mind is going over whether or not the team will tender him an offer or not if he shows good range at SS/2b *if* his range looks good at both positions at the age of 38. He could be exactly what this team has needed since Cora left. My mistake for taking things at face value in the trade for another utility player when he could possibly be a decent one.. IF he still has the range and glove intact at an advanced age. Thx

depth for the playoffs ... in case of injury. They don't need Diaz as the starting SS in the WS.

I don't think Brock Holt will be thrilled. McDonald can sleep in his own bed Sunday I think he lives in Cohasset. Will he be the UI on the team in '14? I would doubt it (maybe).

Veteran depth so Farrell doesn't have to play Xander.

Good insurance policy and usually high A-ball relievers aren't the greatest of prospects (although I won't claim to know much about Ogando). Good move in insuring the only weakness on the 40-man roster before the playoffs.

Injury depth and a little late inning help at 2nd, giving Pedroia a blow. It looks like he could use some rest and from looking at the standings we might be able to give some to him.

McDonald is a Jose Iglesias replacement at minimal cost. If Boston can build a big enough lead then he's going to be playing a lot on the left side of the infield to give players a breather. Not to mention he's going to make an excellent defensive replacement in the late innings. Not terrible on the bases either. Can't hurt honestly

UZR and TotalZone have him as +9 R/150 at SS since 2005, but DRS has him at +21. At 2B, in a small sample of just 500 innings, UZR has him at +12, Total Zone +14, and DRS +24.

Countermove is Wilson to the 60-day, like I've been saying for a while now...

I mean he is what in reality Iglesias truly is. He's a .230-.240 hitter who can provide awesome defense. Iglesias is not a true .300 hitter

Got Nefi Ogando and Heri Quevedo confused, so upon further review I am all for this move even if it is minor. Quevedo I have small hopes for, Ogando not so much.
