Pence is having a career year on a bad team and will be a free-agent after this year. I don't think it would be a bad idea to consider him if the Sox can't re-sign Ellsbury and if the price and years are right. The problem is, he has up and down years, on the wrong side of 30, and the price could be enormous. His right-handed bat would fit well at Fenway though.
The Sox will have plenty of in-house options in the outfield next year that are under contract. These include Bradley, Nava, Gomes, Brentz, Victorino, Carp (Unless moved to 1st if Napoli departs as FA). Plus, Ellsbury may be back next year. Because of the abundance of in-house options, one could certainly argue the Sox wouldn't need another outfielder.
I'm not saying that the Sox need to get Pence, I just think we should just start a thread on it. Any thoughts on Pence?

He reportedly wants to re-sign in San Fran, and they want to keep him. Can't see him leaving.

One significant factor is if he will receive a qualifying offer. For the reasons, you cited he is not a type of player that you would lose a 1st round pick.
