Rays will be hard to beat due to all the off days.
On the bright side, if we do win, it will be really satisfying to beat the Rays.

@dszymborski I wasn't even able to find any significant relationship for the actual *season* record vs actual opponent and playoff success
@dszymborski In other words, knowing how team 1 vs. team 2 went during the season hasn't had predictive value over how it would go in the playoffs.
Looking forward to seeing the Sox take it to a couple of elite lefties this weekend!

Looking forward to all 4 series. Looks like some great matchups. I understand the angst about playing Tampa, but I don't share it. This is fun stuff for me.

My son went ahead and got tickets for game 3 at the trop. Too noisy with a sold out house in that case with those ding bells ringing and those ding bell fans for me.

Maybe the Red Sox fans and a few early runs will quiet those cow bells. They annoy the hell out of me. I'll have the mute button ready.

It appears from the Globe story that Berry is on the roster and Bradley is not. Did Morales pitch his way off the roster? He wasn't very good in his last several appearances.

I suspect Morales will be one of the 11 pitchers. Thornton will be left off. I've read that Doubront made the roster. So the eleven pitchers are: Lester, Lackey, Buchholz, and Peavy with the bullpen consisting of Uehara, Breslow, Tazawa, Dempster, Morales, Workman, and Doubront. The fourteen position players are: Ellsbury, Victorino, Pedroia, Ortiz, Napoli, Gomes, Salty, Middlebrooks, and Drew with the bench consisting of Ross, Carp, Bogaerts, Nava, and Berry.

Have tickets to games 1/2. Really hoping the crowd actually shows up for tomorrow. It's been impossible to give tickets away to most of the "business world" with the 3PM start
Hoping that Xander gets a start vs a lefty in the first two games, but I'm fairly sure that Farrell will stick with Drew and his sub 200 average vs. lefties. He's 0-10 vs. Price with 5 K's and 2-5 vs. Moore. But I just don't know if they trust Xander to get a start vs. Price. He probably should given how terrible Drew is vs. LHP and Price in particular, but Farrell didn't show much to give the thought that he'd actually start X over Drew when it counts

I agree with you regarding Bogaerts vs Price. If Drew starts, it will seem more important to Farrell to espouse loyalty and preserve family unity than to choose the best rational option. Drew is likely a better fielder too. So, given those factors and Drew's seniority, Bogaerts sadly sits. He will be IMO, if used at all, a pinch hitter in a late game situation.

Based on what's been reported, the roster is pretty set. They're going with 11 pitchers and Doubront has apparently made the roster over Thornton.
C: Salty/Drew 1B: Napoli 2B: Pedroia 3B: WMB SS: Drew IF: Bogaerts LF: Nava/Gomes CF: Ellsbury RF: Victorino 1B/OF: Carp OF: Berry DH: Ortiz
SP: Lester/Lackey/Buchholz/Peavy CL: Uehara SU: Breslow/Tazawa MR: Workman/Dempster/Morales LR: Doubront

I bought tickets during the online sale. Was excited to go to my first ever Sox playoff game. 3PM start time has cancelled those plans.
If it's illegal, delete away, but I have two tickets I'd be happy to sell at face value if anyone here can go.
This series screams 5 games at me.

We're going to need a big series from Pedroia, Napoli and Victorino with Ellsbury, Ortiz and others facing lefties so often.

Ughh... 4 lefties this series and drew is going to be painful It's only three lefties-- Tampa Bay is probably going to go Moore - Price - Cobb - Archer/Hellickson - Price. Also, Farrell stated today that David Ross would start one of the first two games, so that's nice. Drew will probably start in the first two games, though, so that's not so nice.

Ross has had success in a small sample against Price so that may be the game. Drew is 0-10 vs. Price. Really, if they are using short sample numbers to justify starting Lackey in game 2 then Bogaerts should start that game at SS as well based on the same logic. OK, I'm done.

It'll be interesting to see Moore's velocity and command in the early going. He threw harder (93.4) during his 2 hit shutout in Boston on 7/22 than any other start this year. It was his subsequent start when he strained his elbow. Since Sept return, he's gone beyond 6 innings in just 1 of his 6 starts (with one prolonged rain delay knocking him out). He was sitting at 91 and walked 9 batters in 10+ over last two starts.

If Xander is on the roster and Farrell expressed that he may pinch hit for Drew then why can't he start? I mean if they are comfortable perhaps sending him in a key moment then they should be comfortable starting him.
I know the likely answer is that Xander ain't gonna pinch hit in a tough situation.
I don't want to start a "Xander should start" thing again just wanted to express some thoughts.

If Xander is on the roster and Farrell expressed that he may pinch hit for Drew then why can't he start? I mean if they are comfortable perhaps sending him in a key moment then they should be comfortable starting him. It's not totally illogical-- the idea is that Drew is a better and much more polished defensive player, especially in terms of non-obvious areas such as in the shift or as a relay man. If you start Drew and bat him 7th or 8th at home, you get maybe 7 or 8 innings of superior defensive value while only having the inferior hitter in there for two PAs (you can then pinch-hit for him in that third PA if it's a clutch situation). Even then, the offensive downgrade might not be worth the defensive upgrade. I'd hope that Bogaerts gets one start versus a lefty in this series, but I wouldn't count on it.
