So, thinking as I type, what time is Saturday's game likely to be? (Those of us planning to see Gravity some time that day especially want to know now.)
If the Pirates win tonight as God intends, the network choices would be (with local times):
Det at Bos 4 PM, Pit at LAN 5 PM Pit at LAN 1 PM, Det at Bos 8 PM
I think the sun determines this one; they have to go with the normal start times and avoid the difficulties of televising all the shadows.
If the Cardinals win tonight, it's
Det at Bos 4 PM, LAN at StL 7 PM LAN at StL 3 PM, Det at Bos 8 PM
This is tougher. LA is the biggest TV market, but the question is, which game would be the bigger national draw? The Tigers have way more star power than the Cardinals, and the three teams most often picked to go all the way are Det, Bos, and LA, so our game would also seem to be the more competitive one. And if you were a network executive given a choice to televise David Ortiz and Victor Martinez hitting versus Clayton Kershaw and Michael Wacha, Lance Lynn, or Joe Kelly, which would you pick?

Granted things can change but it looks like Detroit has two LHPs in the pen, Smyly and Alvarez, while Oakland has Anderson, Doolitle and Blevins.

I guess I'll show myself to be an ancient fogey here, but I think that celebration for a first-round playoff win is sort of silly. After all, this franchise does have quite a bit of playoff history in the past decade, including 2 championships. Yes, most of the players are different, but still, I think a franchise with this pedigree of recent history should show its maturity by taking things a little more in stride.

I think it was necessary if not just because it was the Rays. After what happened monday, it just makes it that much sweeter. Plus Peavy got a tune up for next round and the team stays fresh, which is an added bonus.

Anyone have a sense of when game times will be announced for the alcs? Do they do them all at once or a few at a time?

For better or for worse, this team has been a work hard/play hard bunch all year. Look at the beard-tugging after home runs or Koji's high-fives or the Native American statue or Papi deciding to take BP with an aluminum bat before Game 4. They're an exuberant, goofy bunch. A lot of the "good clubhouse guys" are not the most stoic characters-- think Gomes or Ross or Napoli or Dempster. You can call it immature if you like, but it's what got them there and entirely in character with the composition of the team.

Tickets for ALCS on sale now on RedSox.com. I just got tickets for both games 1 and 2. Go Sox! Thanks for this. I wish I saw it when it when up but I was able to snag RF Box seats for Game 7. Hopefully we'll have it sewn up by then. If not, I will be finding a flight Sat from wherever I am that day (thank you priceline!).

I think it's great. Let's face it, they were going to go out and celebrate in some bar or on the plane anyway. So they just let us see it. Who cares if they spray a bunch of champagne around? It's not my house.
If I thought it mattered even the tiniest bit as to how they'll play 4 days later I'd be right on board with you. But it won't. At least not that we'll ever know, despite what the Shaughnessys of the world might say. If they acted stoic and "Professional" half the people would say they're probably "Too tight". They're damned either way, so they might as well have fun as they go...

Anyone have a link to Maddon's post game press conference? I want to see if he says they got beat by the Trop.
Ells was the key to that passed ball, btw - I'm convinced he got the catcher to take his eye off the pitch just long enough to facilitate the screw-up.

Good news everyone: I will be officially banning myself from game day threads going forward.
The only exception will be when the Red Sox need by reverse jinx magic (now 14-3). In the meantime, let's go Sox!

Did Peter Abraham make a pink hat comment after Farrell pinched hit for Drew? Didn't notice.

What's good for the Sox is that Detroit and Oakland are going 5 games. Oakland is using Colon and Detroit is going with Scherzer. This means vs Detroit: Game 1: Lester vs Sanchez Game 2: Lackey vs Verlander Game 3: Buchholz vs Scherzer Game 4: Peavy vs Fister This means vs Oakland: Game 1: Lester vs Gray Game 2: Lackey vs Parker Game 3: Buchholz vs Colon Game 4: Peavy vs Straily I'd much prefer Oakland in this scenario given that their starters aren't as good as Detroit's. The good news is that either way these are right handed starters and that renders Nava, Salty, and Drew relevant again, and I don't think Detroit is knee deep in lefties out of the pen. Scherzer pitched in relief yesterday. Detroit is pitching Verlander tomorrow. Oakland reportedly is deciding between Colon and Gray. Ah thanks. Didn't catch the Tigers/A's game until the 8th inning. I guess that would mean Scherzer could go in Game 2 against Lackey and Buchholz could go ahead Verlander in Game 3. I would think, despite how well Gray has pitched, that Colon would get the call for the A's. He's been their ace all year, but I guess we'll see how that shakes out.

On the one hand I kind of agree with you, but that's just how/when celebrations are done in today's game, and baseball players are nothing if not slaves to convention

Shane Victorino and HBPs: Righty-on-righty, Shane Victorino gets hit by pitches about as often as Dustin Pedroia walks. Just absurd.

Does the HBP tool develop before/after a player's power tool? And, should it be considered a tool? Making a 6-tool player possible.

Sounds like its Gray going for Oakland in game 5, so it should be either Anibal Sanchez or Colon vs the sox at Fenway on Saturday for game 1

Are you advocating "marking your spot" on Tampa's turf as a way of showing them who is boss and especially Joe Maddon? Especially after so many childish tantrums he and some players of his have resorted to over the last few seasons? You are right.. Leave some heat lamps on over night even.. let the clubhouse smell real nice time the rays cleanup crew arrives...

That would be a cool scenario.

I think I'm rooting for the Tigers here. The pen is leaky, Cabrera looks like he has a sports hernia, and half their staff will be used up and not avail til games 2 & 3. Oakland looks too much like a mirror of the Sox.
