Castellanos was DFA'd by LAD on 10/17 when they picked up Mike Baxter.
Castellanos is a 27YO RHH OF who can play LF and RF decently and be spotted in CF. He has also played 2B and 3B, so profiles as a RHH bench bat.

Interesting. Hazelbaker has a bit of a Ruggiano vibe. Castellanos has a bit of a David Freese vibe.
Interesting deal, hopefully Hazelbaker gets a shot at the ML.

Great minor league #s with the PCL caveat. Never got a real shot in the majors.

I was going to suggest that it wouldn't surprise me if he were designated for assignment here, but they sent cash in the deal too. However, I suppose it still wouldn't surprise me. He was DFA'd by the Dodgers a week ago and no one claimed him so maybe Boston will try to push him through and this was a way to add depth to AAA and clear a 40 man spot over the long run. If it doesn't work then you didn't lose anything you might not have lost anyways.

Castellanos had some pretty spectacular statistical seasons in the minors. He hit .320/.386/.573 in AA (across two organizations) in 2011 and .319/.379/.562 in AAA (caveat: for the Isotopes of the PCL, one of the most offensively inflated parks in all the minor leagues) in 2012. He was less impressive in 2013 (.257/.347/.468), however, and he's always been pretty old for his league.
His scouting reports have him pegged as an aggressive hitter with some swing-and-miss tendencies but average to better power. He probably doesn't have the range for center field but can hold down a corner outfield spot. The Dodgers tried him at 2B, 3B, and 1B, but it doesn't look like he impressed at any of those positions. Seems like a good buy-low move on a guy who could still be a solid bench player.

Looks like he might be in the bench/utility mix with Holt and Hassan. His best positions are both corner infield and outfield spots so he does have some versatility. He seems to have a lot better OBP skills than Hazelbaker. Good minor league depth with some upside, was the Dodgers 11th ranked propect coming into 2013, not sure if that tells his potential or shows how devoid of talent the Dodgers farm is.
There will probably be a couple more of these types of moves to make the roster work during the offseason.
Hard to get too excited with a small seven game series starting tonight.

Solid move. Hazelbaker was blocked behind other players and now hopefully will get an opportunity with the Dodgers. We get a utility man with 1 option left. win win for both teams.

Dont know much about Castellanos but I really liked what Hazelbaker brought to the table with his great combo of speed and power.

Dont know much about Castellanos but I really liked what Hazelbaker brought to the table with his great combo of speed and power. Did you ever see him play? With his speed he should have been a very good OF but I often found myself yelling, "What is he doing?" I just can't describe it, you just have to see it in person. |

40-man roster implications ...
Assuming they didn't get this guy in order just to DFA him later, and assuming the following off-season moves are made:
-- DFA Snyder and Berry and non-tender Bailey
-- Add Ranaudo, Cecchini, and Brentz
-- Sign a C and 1B
-- Trade Peavy or Dempster
Then one of the following must happen, in rough order of likelihood:
-- Trade Morales (giving the job to Britton, who could be stretched out to fill the combo LOOGY / longman role)
-- Not add a RHR as expected (giving the job to Workman, which would allow De La Rosa to start)
-- Make a 2 for 1 or 3 for 2, etc. trade
[much less likely:]
-- DFA Villareal
-- Not add a backup MI as expected (giving the job to Holt)
-- DFA Holt
-- DFA Kalish (even though he's supposedly healthy)
One would guess that they have a good idea already which of these is in the cards, hence they felt they had room for on the roster. Morales probably has more value to some team that would give him another shot to start, than to us as a longman and extra LOOGY.

Eric I pretty much agree with that assessment, though I don't think DFAs of Villarreal should be on the less likely tab - he is out of options, is 26, and his control is still just a theory. He has a live arm but I don't think they'd hesitate to DFA him if any sort of roster-crunch comes up.
Holt/Kalish sort of hinges on how the Sox view Castellanos. If they don't think he's an infielder, it will be hard to see them keeping him, Kalish, Brentz, and Hassan on the 40-man. In that case I'd expect either Brentz to be moved or Kalish to be DFA'd. If they think Castellanos is capable in the infield then all the previous words in this paragraph are pretty meaningless.

I can't see another team offering him a guaranteed major league deal, and I think the Red Sox have enough goodwill built up that he'd prefer to stay in the organization. Can he be non-tendered, though, with just 2 years and 33 days of service time? I don't think he's arb-eligible, so any team that wants to take a chance on him could grab him for nothing. Like the Cubs. |

And they can always trade for something better in ST. In a scenario where Castellanos is the backup 2B / 3B and 5th OF, the backup SS is ... Dustin Pedroia. It seems really unlikely to me, but it's amusing enough to mention. (In a scenario where Drew accepts a QO and they trade Middlebrooks and play Bogaerts at 3B for a year until Cecchini is ready, Castellanos on the bench obviously makes much more sense.) |
