Xander in the middle of it again, big AB's by Drew, Ross and Ells and we cleared Lesters spot, maybe the perfect inning.

Nice things can happen when you can actually get your bat on the ball!

Seriously though, that was incredibly clutch hitting from Ross and Ellsbury against a very, very good starting pitcher who made most of the lineup look silly. We complain about the lack of clutch hitting often enough; we should recognize it when it happens as well.

Can we just fast forward to next year and have Bogaerts bat behind Ortiz for the rest of the series?

Cart before the horse time, Lester has thrown 81 pitches thru 7, if we add one in the top of the 8th do you take him out with the outside chance of an inning or two in a game 7 or just let him go as long as he can?

Lester is at 81 pitches. Six more outs. He can go the whole game!

We complain about the lack of clutch hitting often enough; we should recognize it when it happens as well. It really was ... huge, huge hits, knowing that there was an automatic out in between them. And, so far, a great performance by Lester. He may go 9 here. He's only at 81 pitches.

Not to get lost in all this (I know it won't on this board), but Xander's adjustments after the first AB were incredible.

Lester has a shot to go 9, win the game, and rest the pen for two days. 2) Game 7 - if necessary he pitches as much as he can. Everybody is available for Game 7 - no matter what. Going two more innings wouldn't change that.

Do you bring in Napoli and Victorino or Berry for defensive purposes after this inning?

Unless the lead stretches to 4 or 5 in this half-inning, no. The bullpen is bone-tired (Breslow, Tazawa, and Uehara have all pitched two nights in a row heading into tonight's game), and Breslow is not exactly trustworthy. Lester is a big, strong dude, and might be able to go an inning or two in game 7 anyways. Win the game tonight.

You absolutely leave him in and let him go. You never know if he's going to have the same stuff during a potential game 7 and as far as him having anything left in the tank that's the last game of the season if we make it there one way or another so I think he might be available for about the same amount of innings either way.

Have the Cardinals shifted on Ortiz all series? That's the second or third hit he's hit hard between first and second that a Rays-esque shift takes away.

Series win probability (assuming 55% for games 6 and 7): 73.6.%
(Of course, we have squandered much better within memory.)

Farrell mentioned pregame that Victorino might be able to do a short stint as a defensive replacement. Now would be the time for it (with Nava going to LF and Gomes being replaced). I think they're saving Napoli for a potential double-switch situation or (god forbid) extra innings.

I for one don't get why Farrell didn't run for Ortiz there. He was coming up lame a little bit after that sprint. It's about that time Napoli comes in the game as a defensive replacement anyway.

Ortiz's defense at 1B has always been better than you'd expect and I imagine they're saving their best pinch-hitter (Napoli) for an opportunity to hit in a high-leverage situation. I don't mind it.
