The outfield will need some filling in for next season and beyond. Name Position 2012 Level 40 Man Options Nava LF MLB Y 0 Ellsbury CF MLB Y Sweeney RF MLB Y Lin CF AAA Y 2 Hazelbaker LF AAA R5 Kalish CF AAA 1 Brentz RF AAA Linares OF AAA Hassan OF AAA R5 Jacobs LF A Bradley CF AA Bogaerts RF? AA Hissey RF AA Almanzar DH (LF?) AA R5
Fangraphs OF free agents for 2013 sorted by wOBA (300PA) Melky Cabrera Josh Hamilton Ryan Ludwick Cody Ross Torii Hunter Scott Hairston Nick Swisher Angel Pagan Juan Pierre (he still plays?!) Michael Bourn BJ Upton Shane Victorino Raul Ibanez Ichiro Suzuki Juan Rivera
The interesting one to me is Torri Hunter. The Angels don't need him, he'll be 38 next year and is still a 3 WAR batter. His defense has slipped to slightly below average at ~-1 win, but considering we only need a LF for 2 or so seasons he might be a solid option that doesn't cost too much.
Prognosticate away.

Every time I look at the potential free agents, I get a little ill. It is not just the outfield candidates above, but through out free agency this year. Yuck!
I would love to see a list of players who are entering their last year (or 2) of their current contracts or who are entering an option year that is too expensive for their current team or is a player who has under-performed and maybe available with upside.
These are the players who Cherington is probably looking at, not just the free agents. Ben is going to have to be very creative this off-season. It should be very interesting how he goes about his re-building efforts. With the Punto trade going down, don't be surprised if he considers taking on a bad contract or two to pick up a player he covets. Now when I say "bad contract", I mean one that lasts for a year or two at most. I see no reason to start handing out 3 or 4 year contracts with this list of free agents. I think we will be TRADING a lot!

In the latter scenario I'd swallow Barry Zito's contract and a package for a Brandon Belt. I'd eat Rafael Soriano's deal if it brings in Matt Garza providing he's healthy and the prospect package is not too crippling. Likewise Vernon Wells (yikes, 21.5m for 2 yrs!), for a Mark Trombo return.
But that's just me. Sabean, Hoyer and the LAA guy may not see it my way.
Don't discount Jerry Sands. Good power numbers albeit in high altitude, low air venues. He may be ready to contribute at the ML level. Worth a look see for what it will cost.

Re-up Cody Ross. Keep Ellsbury another year. Hope he has a great year and let him walk at the end of his contract. I was initially against it. But, I'd sign Josh Hamilton if his contract can be voided if he fails a drug test. 6yr/150m. Play rf for a couple of years. Can always move to LF if he can still run and wants to play the field. Can always move to DH when Papi retires. I want to keep Papi too. But, there is literally no impact player on this team. Pitching or hitting.

Whats everyone's thoughts on Kalish? I really am having concerns he isn't anymore than a 4th OF. I know he has had two seasons worth of injuries so I'm hoping he will turn it around. If I remember correctly (Reddick v Kalish thread a few yrs back) most preferred Kalish.
I think the Royals have to get rid of a corner OF and Gordon is the only thing of value they have to get SP. I want to keep our top 3 arms in Barnes, Webster and Delarosa so I would think smaller. I like Hunter a lot and he has good splits L/R. Ross/Ells/Hunter works with me with Sands playing some LF/1B and Kalish being the 4th OF.

Torii Hunter is a bad idea. He'll be 38 in 2013, an age when even the most durable players are liable to fall apart any second. He just had the highest strikeout rate of his career in 2012 and only put up numbers due to an unsustainable .381 BABIP (.306 career). Even if he still has something left in the tank, the Red Sox are unlikely to compete for more than a wild card spot in 2013. If you can get him on a one year contract, I guess maybe you consider it just as a stop-gap/trade deadline candidate. But he's not really the kind of player the team should be targeting.

Other than maybe re-signing Ross on a friendly deal or Melky Cabrera on a Beltré kind of contract (with a nice option clause), I say to stay the hell away of the FA market.

You would consider taking on the headaches Melky brings, even for one season? The Yankees dispached Cabrera to KC to keep him away from influencing Cano.
Muy mal hombre.

Time to find out what you have in Kalish. Then sign a decent LF/RF on a lucrative 1- or 2-year deal - say, Shane Victorino.
But it could be a very active offseason in terms of trades so the field is wide open.

If by headaches you mean the Boston media treatment I say yes, bring it on.
To plan your acquisitions by what the media could say leads to signing the Lackeys and Crawfords of the world just to appease the fanbase and the media. I couldn't care less about what CHB and his ilk think about, the FO job is to identify talent and acquire it in the cheapest and most advantageous way possible, not public relations.
Would you say no to Braun if he came at the same cost/WAR ratio?
