Heyman is clearly Boras's mouthpiece. And Boras likes to place free agents on the teams he almost appears to chose, rather than the other way around.
Some teams might be just saying they are moving on and Ellsbury may be thinking he could miss the boat on a deal with the Yanks or another big market team unless he strikes first. If I were Ellsbury, given this market, I would be concerned about that as well.

To that point there could be a "Take it by date X or we're moving on" offer on the table from a team he favors, as well - contenders mentioned previously include Bos, Det, Tex, SF, NYY, Sea, Cubs. Of these, the teams that have publicly admitted they spoken to Boras about him include Bos and NYY. Which is meaningless, I know. According to John Heyman, four teams in on Ellsbury are SF, SEA, MFY and BOS. HOU, DET and TEX are reportedly in on Choo but not Ellsbury. No word on CHC. More or less Johnny Damon all over again. Hated it then would hate it now.

If I were Ellsbury, given this market, I would be concerned about that as well. True and true. But it also makes sense, based on what's been leaked out to various reporters. Boras generally wants his players to be last off the market but, in this case, it appears that Ellsbury is holding up the Choo market; therefore, it is in his interest to get Ellsbury off the market at a price which raises the bar for Choo (he appears to be the more popular target, according to reports). I do think he sees an opening with the Hanks, which would be sweet revenge for Cano leaving him to go to Jay-Z's agency.

Ellsbury for 7 years and MORE than Crawford got. Thats madness. This will benefit the Red Sox for years to come.

Ryan Hannable ?@hannable84 1m According to @feinsandnydn, the Yankees' deal with Ellsbury is done, pending a physical. It's more than Carl Crawford's 7 year/$142M deal.

Are people really going to complain about this. We just won the World Series, Ben has a plan, we all knew Ells was leaving 3 years ago. And didn't we learn anything from the Crawford deal. This is the exact type of contact to avoid.

When the Angels let Mark Texeira go in 2008, they drafted Mike Trout with the compensation pick. Let's hope the Red Sox draft the next Mike Trout with the Yankee's 1st round pick next year...

We don't get their pick. That's not how it works.

Certainly it won't be much fun to see Ells in pinstripes for the next 3-4 years. But him being paid $20-$25 at ages 35-37 will likely just leave the Yankees where they are now. The heavy majority of their $ tied up in slim number of players, with little to no depth and an inability to recover if they suffer an injury or two. They still have no rotation

Well, I for one am glad we aren't the ones overpaying him. And it also could means that Cano, a much better player, likely leaves the MFY, which is a plus.

If anyone outside of the Yankees had signed him to this deal most sox fans would be laughing at the contract. Front loading the roster with no depth and a minimal farm system, and barely any current MLB pitching doesn't appear to be the best way to win. If Sabathia is at his best, he's a legit #1. But he looks to be trending downward already. Kuroda is still up in the air, likely going away from the MLB. Maybe they get Tanaka, maybe they don't. That is still far from a legitimate contending rotation

The Red Sox need to do something to upstage the Yankees and win the off-season.

Then how does it work? What do the Sox get for compensation? A comp pick at the end of the first round. It says that the signing team forfeits their 1st round pick as well. So did the Braves get the Yankees pick for losing McCann only because he signed first?
