With Middlebrooks being a big question mark, Xander being a rookie and Pedroia's hard-nosed play a safety blanket would be terrific.
Danny Espinosa appears to not have a position in Washingston and he is a ++defensive second baseman and has shown similar + or better defensive ability at SS in a small sample size. If Middlebrooks struggles then they could easily shift Xander over to third and let Espinosa play SS - or train Espinosa at 3rd (pretty sure he could handle it).
Offensively he was dreadful in 2013 but is still on 26 and has shown good power in the past along with a solid all-around offensive game (although a little lacking on the BA). He is entering his first year of arbitration and likely will be looking at a price tag under/around 1.5 million after the down year
What would it cost to get him from the Nationals?
It appears that the Nationals could use a starting pitcher and may be willing to take Peavy - or possibly a package such as Dempster + Morales + Holt + cash (5 mil?). Dempster/Peavy would play up in the NL and should be as good, or better, than what they got from Haren last year.

If you could get him cheap enough i'd be all for it. I'm just not sure he could be had cheaply.

I'd live to see this happen, mostly because I think he still has something left in him. Maybe Morales, Dempster and Britton

Id love to get Espinosa. Hes a great player. He is a real good defender as a SS and offers power. Hes a tough guy and would fit this team I think. He played threw some bad injuries and his wrist I believe was his most searious one this past year thats why he had a down year and if I recall its still a worrisome issue going forward. For Dempster and Morales and something else small sure heck ya sign me up. I dont see it being a realistic trade tho. Id say Workman is a starting point to headline a deal and I wouldnt want to give him up. But if the cost was cheap to get him id be all over it.

James Wagner of the Washington Post, in response to a fan query on Espinosa, opined that he has little trade value now and that the Nats should hold onto him as competition for Rendon. Could this be an opportunity for Ben to sweep in with an offer of say, Franklin Morales or, even better, Ryan Dempster?
