Should be a great set-up man. This really rounds out the bullpen.

I figure that's it for the bullpen, aside from a rehab-type pickup like Bailey.

Koji insurance.
It is a weird signing as in his only AL stint from 2006-2008 with Cleveland he was bad two of those 3 years.

Rumored to have some injury issues down the stretch. Also rumored to have been seeking a three-year deal. He's a proven 8th inning reliever, who could close if Uehara gets hurt or regresses, but it seems very expensive.

On a separate note, STL's decision not to use him in the playoffs likely cost Mujica a lot of money.

$5mm for a set up guy isn't bad. (Mike Adams signed 2/12; Affeldt 3/21; League 4/27.5[!]; Burnett 2/8; Broxton 3/21 - though, I suppose he may have irrationally been signed as a closer who never pitches, etc.)
And jmei will be happy, which is nice.
They signed a closer to non-closer $. That's nice.

@redsoxstats: Mujica, Koji, Tazawa, and Badenhop ranked #1, #3, #7, and #12 in lowest walk rates of 135 qualified MLB RP in 2013. Nasty.
Also, this is good news:
@overthemonster: Apparently Mujica had groin issues late last year. Explains September in a way that doesn't really threaten 2014 performance. I like it.

What else were they going to do with that money, anyway? One of the starters is ticketed out sooner or later for a savings and really there is only one major bat to add.
And unlike certain previous fiascos, we didn't give up talent.

On a separate note, STL's decision not to use him in the playoffs likely cost Mujica a lot of money. No doubt about that! 37 saves(5a,12m,4j,9jul(2bs),5a,2S, 5 walks.. did supposedly have some elbow issue but the strong young arms replaced him (and we saw it was them not him with our own eyes). Strong signing..love the pen.

I guess you could argue that it's expensive in some kind of abstract sense but I don't see this contract as one that's going to hurt the Red Sox in any real way. Mujica's had a fascinating career path. Check out his ground/fly ratios over his career, and his pitch types. Started as an extreme flyball guy, developed a splitter, got to the point where he throws said splitter nearly half the time, and gets close to 45-50% ground balls the last couple years.

Sox signing Mujica to a two year $9.5 Million deal according to Jeff Passan. Good move at a good price. Definitely makes this team better. 20million left to spend. Am I crazy for having this feeling that this move was done to make someone like Workman or Tazawa more tradable? Does that make sense?

Maybe this is where we get a backup CF/RF for a bullpen arm.

or it clears the way for a Dempster/Peavy trade. There are too many guys with no options for all of them to make the roster.

I would have preferred if the second year was a team option of sorts because of the injury problem. But I guess that's just being greedy. Great sign!

My roster math says that Franklin Morales has just been booted out the door.
Uehara, Tazawa, Badenhop, Mujica; Miller, Breslow; Workman, Villareal. That's 8 bodies for 7 slots, even without Morales.
Villareal can make the team, for a while at least, if someone is hurt in ST (which happens more often than not). The "worst case" scenario is that Workman is optioned to Pawtucket, where he could start, if the pen seems fine without him because Villareal looks good and everyone is healthy.
Meanwhile, they're at 40 on the 40-man with Napoli or alternative, and a backup SS yet to be added. One spot is likely to be opened up by dealing either Butler or Lavarnway to ease the AAA catching logjam. Morales is the obvious second choice, since he would appear to have no chance of making the 25-man, as the 8th or 9th best relief option and eighth best starting option.
Meanwhile, by my reckoning (based on Speier's plus MLBTradeRumor's arbitration estimates) they have $18.05M to spend on Napoli / X and a backup SS, if they want to leave $5M for a deadline deal. Edit: If I'm right about Morales, that becomes $19.85M. Of course they can cut into the $5M leeway figure a bit.
This probably rules out a number of possibilities that have been kicked around, specifically re-signing both Napoli and Drew.
Edit: Cliff Pennington is signed for $2.75M with a year of further control left; Mike Aviles is signed for $3M with an an option for $3.5M. (I would think either might be had for one year of Morales as a potential starter.) I'm not sure how much Barmes would fetch. They could certainly still go with Holt as the backup SS, but they should be able to afford one of these guys (but probably not Rafael Furcal).

Wow, 3 hours after advocating his signing a 2 year/$10m deal in another thread this comes up.
Ben, if you're still following my ideas I'd love Furcal over Drew and Granderson for LF. Thanks buddy!

I agree on the number (my running total has the Red Sox approx. $23.5mm below the threshold) but disagree that they would be unable to re-sign Napoli and Drew. The team is likely to jettison Dempster at some point once the free agent market clears up. Even if the team eats $3.5mm, it saves the team $10mm AAV. If Napoli signs for 15mm AAV and Drew for 13mm AAV, that leaves $5.25mm for in-season moves.

That roster crunch could be solved by trading a player or 2 also. As in one of our starters. Workman is probably a starter next year. That is probably what's going on regarding Mujica.
Not saying Morales is going to be with the team. Just saying there are other options also, even likely options.
