The Twins and White Sox are linked to Ynoa as well.

It seems in international signings, the relationship the scouts form with the families have quite an influence on decisions other than just big money. That's my impression from reading articles anyway.

@benbadler 1h This could get very, very interesting. Cuban star OF Alfredo Despaigne is in Mexico on a Dominican passport: bit.ly/1jDz8kh MUST HAVE!! (free agent, not a draft guy) but international - muy international given the passport situation.

He is not defecting, he is there due to an agreement between Cuban baseball and the Mexican League. He is using a Dominican passport due to the embargo because the Mexican League has some sort of affiliation with MiLB which could cause problems with the US government.
I wonder how he got a Domican passport when even some people born in the Dominican can't get it.

Anyways, while not in this case (as The Mexican League is not a huge step up in quality compared to Cuba's) it will be interesting to see how Cuban players will perform playing freely* in professional leagues for actual money. Frederich Cepeda agreed to a million and half dollar contract with Sancti Spiritus in Japan and apparently Yuliesky Gourriel is following suit. I imagine that there will be quite a queue of peloteros at every party event and revolutionary parade trying to earn points with those that that can grant them such visas.

How does the false passport fit into the narative here? He was allowed to play in Mexico, so why would it matter if he had a DR or Cuban passport? If his intention was to defect, he could do so with a Cuban passport, no?

He was using the DR passport because the Mexican league is affiliated with MiLB so there might be problems with the US govenment due to the embargo.
To defect he would need to renounce Cuban citizenship and stablish recidency somewhere other than Cuba, obviously.
You can read the article above it can answer you more clearly.

The US/Cuba embargo is about 25 years overdue to be undone. So dumb.

He was using the DR passport because the Mexican league is affiliated with MiLB so there might be problems with the US govenment due to the embargo. Right, sorry, I'm not being clear. He played for the Mexican league the prior year, but on a Cuban passport, and with the consent (in fact, brokered agreement) of Cuba. This time, he is playing on a DR passport - but there is still the same agreement in place with Cuba. Why would we think that he'll defect this year when he didn't last year, and why would the fake passport have anything to do with that? In other words, I think, PeG, you were right to begin with. And I think Badler hasn't said what has changed.

Yeah I understand what you are saying. It seems to be that the Mexican League decision wether to suspend him or ban him could have an effect on any potential move to the US but yeah he is not saying directly that Despeigne plans to defect, maybe he is hearing something but isn't comfortable writing it yet.

I'd rather have Carbonell than Despaigne. The latter is a bit too stocky for my taste and couldnt play RF IMO.

I've wondered if Despaigne could handle RF but honestly I'd take either one just bc we don't have a ton of options at the corners. I'd also like to see us on the South Korean 3B this offseason. Anyone know what type of bonus Carbonell is expected to get?

js.mlblogs.com/2014/05/19/cubas-carbonell-weighing-offers-from-five-teams/Says he wants a 4 year offer. May want an MLB deal. As says five tools FWIW. Everyone doesn't agree on that part but everyone (Badler, Heyman, etc) reporting his. calling cards are power & speed. Gee, Sox don't need either of those. They missed on Puig and Abreu. Let's hope whoever scouted those two isn't the one who is making the call on this guy too.

Well Gammo has a scout who says he's a beast - Gammo so take it with a 50 lb bag of salt: ?@pgammo 2h Cuba's Carbonell weighing offers from five teams wp.me/p1rXTf-8tDA via @jessesanchezmlb. One scout familiar w/ Carbonell:"A beast." OF is a position of need. If this guy can play better than league ave CF and has a great set of wheels, well, we don't have that.

It sucks that the only great athletes seem to be coming from the Caribbean. I know we have some like Trout and Harper. But, where are the; Parkers, Winfields, Valentines, Dawsons, Maddox, McBride, Rice, Bonds, Reggie Smith, Reggie Jackson, George Hendricks. MLB needs to find a way to get more African-Americans playing baseball, All of the great, good and average athletes go D-1 to play football. Get the crap beat out of them and play 3.5 years in the NFL and come out broke. I love football. But, don't get the unbelievable draw it has to kids given the injury risk.

Having played both football and baseball my college years (cut from college baseball after freshman year; injured out of football in my soph year), the skill level for baseball is so much higher that I continue to be amazed by MLB hitters.
There are also some socioeconomic factors that hamper baseball. When I was growing up in the 70s and 80s you could always find 15 or so kids in the neighborhood for a game. Now, it is much more difficult for that as well.
