How so ? When he's eligible they are going to have to put him there anyways and if he was on it, they could DL him and have a substitute. What am I missing ? I could be wrong about this, but I believe if he is on the 40-man and hurt in big league camp he has to go on the major league DL and lose a year of service time. It's that to open up the 40-man spot, he has to be on the MLB 60-day DL. They could certainly keep him on the minor league DL and pay him less while not accruing service time, but that's not usually the way teams go.

Again, I could be wrong on this, but I was under the impression that a 40-man player that is hurt in big league camp can't be placed on the minor league DL.

I guess I always just assumed a team would prefer to put someone on the 60-day. Quick skim of the CBA didn't turn anything obvious up. FWIW, he wasn't hurt in camp. He was injured in November and they tried to rehab it. STUNNINGLY just rehabbing it didn't work, so now he's going under the knife.

A player needs to be optioned from ML camp to MiL camp, but you cannot option someone who is on the DL. I had this conversation when Strasburg needed surgery, too.

Could they have avoided this by not inviting him to ML camp if they knew he might have a serious elbow problem? Or is everyone on the 40 man automatically assumed to be a ML ST invite?

If you assume that it is a service time issue ( ahem ), then the invite doesn't matter. It only matters if they need to option the player to put him in the minors. There is no roster right now other than the 40 man, so there is no ability to put a player in the minors absent an option. Therefore, assuming you cannot option than DL, it wouldn't matter if they invited him to ML camp or not.

Sano will go on the minor league DL. He isn't on the 40-man. The conversation is about whether they dodged a bullet because he isn't on the 40-man, in which case he'd have burned a year of service time on the MLB DL. As an NRI, Sano doesn't need to be optioned to minor league camp, so he'll definitely go on the minor league DL.

He may have burned a year of service in this instance but he would not have burned a minor league option.

One of my favorite ex-Sox Gabe Kapler is joining Fox pre-game. He's worked for Fox since Fox Sports One launched, so not a surprise really. I'm sure he'll be great. He may have burned a year of service in this instance but he would not have burned a minor league option. With a player like Sano, options shouldn't be an issue. Bogaerts, for example, will likely never use even one.

Off topic but Adam Dunn went to the Oscars. This is what he found when he returned:

Supposedly Masterson is asking for an extension up to four years, $60 million. hardballtalk.nbcsports.com/2014/03/04/justin-masterson-could-be-willing-to-accept-a-three-year-deal-from-the-indians/Considering the price of durable pitching, even if Masterson doesn't maintain his 2013 gains against lefties that seems like the sort of deal the Indians should jump on. $15 million for a durable #3 type without a ridiculous commitment in years? Yes please. EDIT: And I should add that if Masterson DOES keep maintain those gains against lefties then he's a real #2 and is a fair bet for a $100 million deal.

If a hit is called foul, that cannot be reviewed I assume because the runners would stop running. Am I right about this?
If that is the case, will umps be more likely to call close calls fair?

I think the umps can give players they're their expected bases.

Am I the only one that finds it humorous that Budweiser and MLB are trying to collect 100,000 signatures to declare opening day a national holiday when the first game will be played in Australia ?
