This team has too many holes to fill without making some trades in the off season. I am not going to say in my initial post who we should trade for or if these players should even be traded at all besides noting who has low or high relative value. Just as the in the stock market, one doesn't want to sell when the value is low in general but it is not always the case.
I just wanted a place to get all of our potential chips in one spot so we have an idea of what we have through the whole system.
If I am missing something that could garner value in a trade, let me know and I can add it into the original post.
I would like realistic discussions as to what players we should keep and who we can use in trades. We have a glut of right handed relief pitching for example and you could use that as an argument to pull some names off the list as players you would prefer to see used in trades. I am not interested in the specific trades as much as what players we should use on our team to fill in pieces and what pieces we keep to build on during the bridge year.
Any details given help the discussion as to why you think the player should be used in a trade or not.
*Edit* I broke this down into categories a bit more because the list is huge
Impact players with high relative value
Xander Bogaerts - 19 years old and raking with power in AA... yeah... best blue chip we have by a long shot
Barnes - He had good numbers and tailed off a bit, but didn't do it against higher competition so that affects his value a touch
Bradley - dominated the lower levels and struggled a bit in AA before turning it around... on base machine with excellent defense... there is a lot of value there
Salty - showed great power, but with Lava... his value to the Sox goes down a bit. I also think if the Sox go back to an OBP and saber-metric style of hitting then he has more value on the trading block
Alfredo Aceves - Controlled versatile pitcher who can close, relieve or start... that has value on the market. He likely talked his way out of town by his antics this year.
Andrew Miller - great reclamation project... had an excellent season out of the pen and the red sox patience paid off. controlled through 2014
Will Middlebrooks - had a great season in AAA and his debut in the majors was equally as impressive... he has power, but his plate discipline is not good and his approach at the plate is not great as well... he was the biggest news in baseball for a bit with the Youks trade and he could garner a very strong return if the Sox wish to take the team back to a patient hitting club
Junichi Tazawa - has been lights out coming from the pen all season in both the minors and the big club... he can pitch multiple innings and most of his outings in the minors were 2 innings... he was a starter when we signed him before TJ surgery so that possibility exists as well.. controlled through 2016
Felix Doubront - young hard throwing lefty who started off the year as our best pitcher for the first half and trailed off in teh second half... he is controlled through 2017
Franklin Morales - even with his shoulder problems, he showed that he was great out of the bullpen and even better as a starter. He is controlled through 2014 and his value has risen quite a bit in the past two years
Rich Hill - since coming back from injury, Rich has been dominant in limited time... being healthy is a skill that doesn't show up in the stats and Rich might be a guy to trade while he has value before he gets hurt again... he also only has one more year of control left
Craig Breslow - he has been a solid lefty bullpen arm before and after the trade and he has had a nice career... he only has one year of control left so he might be an attractive piece to a team
Clay Mortensen - another young arm who has had a great year in the minors and showed that he can relieve in the show well... has past starting experience and is controlled till 2017
Scott Atchison - was having an all star caliber season before getting injured... proved that he is healthy since coming back and still has solid numbers... he is controlled until 2015 when he will be 39 years old
Allen Webster - very young ground ball starting pitcher with two years of AA experience... he has a lot of value if traded
Michael Olmsted - Had one heck of a season posting a 13.95 K/BB that was consistent with last year and showed that he could do it against higher competition in AA. He shows a very strong WHIP to go along with those strikeout numbers and could be a piece of a trade. Personally, I would like to see what he could do in the Sox pen... he has an imposing presence like Dick Radatz.
De La Rosa - not on the team yet, but we all know he is a PTBNL in the punto trade... He is a power arm with limited success in the majors at 22... coming off TJ, but could be a huge value in a trade
players who lowered in value this year
Lester - off year, salary increasing, controlled for two more years
Ellsbury - two injury plagued seasons with an MVP caliber season in between... his power went away at the same time as his rate of steals
Bard - epic starting pitching experiment fail... enough said
Lackey - he sucked with the sox before he was injured and he was just out for a year and costs 15.25 mil in each of the next two years
Kalish - injury prone and when healthy under performs at the plate
Iglesias - great glove, no bat... we knew that, but he looks over matched at the plate and worse than anticipated...his time in the majors just shows he is a defensive replacement so far driving his value down
Che-Hsuan Lin - see Iglesias, but as an outfielder and base runner
Lavarnway - He is struggling after his cup of coffee last year at the plate and his value is down while he is getting adjusted to life in the show
Ryan Sweeney - controlled for another year, but with no power and coming off a major injury he has no value
Anthony Ranaudo - had a horrible year and if he doesn't bounce back next year he is in danger of flaming out
Mark Melancon - started out as rough as it can get with Boston, but dominated in the minors and pitched well enough to bring his value back up till midseason... has solid closing experience and is controlled till 2016
Brandon Jacobs - poor season after being promoted to high A ball
Non-Impact players who increased value
Josh Fields - excellent numbers with an insane k/9 the past two years, not on 40 man roster
Pedro Ciriaco - great showing this year, but I hate his OBP numbers and lack of power...some say sell while his value is high in articles I read... I tend to agree, but make your own choice
Stolmy Pimentel - had a bounce back year after a horrible season last year and doesn't have enough command to be successful with the Sox IMO... but could have trade value
Mauro Gomez - had a great season in AAA hitting 310 with 24 homers before hitting 309 with 2 homers for the Sox
Daniel Nava - had a great season in AAA with a 425 OBP before getting called up... was excellent for the Sox with a great approach at the plate before his injury... his value isn't as high now, but he showed that he is a major league caliber hitter
Drake Britton - his numbers really improved with the move from A to AA ball from last year... pitching as a starter now, but is really a reliever type in the long run... not too much value, but for him his stock is still high relative to where it was last year
Chris Carpenter - came as damaged goods from Chicago as the chip in the TheoGate trade... young power arm that has shown that he is healthy and has pitched well since coming back from elbow surgery
Juan Carlos Linares - even with all the injuries to the sox outfield, Linares didn't get called up because he is not on the 40 man roster... at 27, he is getting old for a prospect and we might want to trade him while he is still hitting well in the minors to go along with his good defense in center field
Will Inman - has massive strikeout numbers, but too many walks for my liking... has been in AAA since 2009 and showed great improvement in his k/9 since being moved to the pen
Keury De La Cruz - breakout year, but only in A ball... so next year might garner more or less value for him
Travis Shaw - Breakout year as well with power and a good approach at the plate... struggled a bit after hitting AA, but his stock is definitely up from last year
Chris Hernandez - Showed that he could have success without overwhelming stuff at higher levels. Since his offerings are not what stands out to scouts, he will probably not garner value in a trade, but his value did increase from last year.
Zach Stewart - another young promising starting pitcher that we control for years
