Forget Drew! Too much money, years and the loss of a draft pick. Forget Stanton, I know it's tempting but keep the kids! Look how that has playing out for the Cardinals.
Bogearts defensive needs to improve but judging him based on 8 games, not exactly the wisest of decisions. With his strong arm and average range he would certainly benefit from a move to third. During his peak season, if he were to continue at SS think Jeter but with more power, and fewer steals.
In the event Bogie moves to third Middlebrooks, need to goto 1B or RF. He has the skills to be a adequate or better defender at all four corner spots. Cecchini would also need to move down the defensive spectrum, and I'm not as confident in his defensive abilities as I am in Middlebrooks. Cechini will eventually move off 3B as his primary position but would provide essential depth there.
Marrero/Betts should be able to fill the SS void, if Bogie is moved. Marrero is most likely a UIF on the sox, while Betts stands a chance to start. As long as Pedroia is on the team, Betts won't be starting at second.
What I am suggesting is similar to the Rays model of a roster. The Rays have consistantly build a roster full of adequate or better defensive infielders, that play the outfield to while providing depth for the infield. This allows the outfield to be composed of better hitting less defensive minded outfielders excluding said infielders. As an example the Rays had the following non-1B/C infielders play the outfield in the last couple of last years, Zobrist, Rodriguez, Forsythe, K. Johnson, E. Johnson, and Brignac. The Rays have consistently keep about three of these types, with 1 essentially being a infield starter. With that in mind, it is not likely all these guys work out but if it were to the Sox it could look something like this in 2016:
1B - Cecchini, Middlebrooks
2B - Pedroia, Betts, Marrero
SS - Marrero, Betts, Bogearts (by 2016 based on body type/current ability, most likely to not play SS)
3B - Bogearts, Middlebrooks, Cecchini
CF - Bradley, Betts
RF - Betts, Middlebrooks, Brentz
LF - Middlebrooks, Cecchini, Brentz
Obviously the two guys that could bring clarity to the situation is Marrero based on hitting development, and Betts based on ability to play SS, thus creating a chain reaction down the defensive spectrum for everyone else.
With that in mind, Stephen Drew who? Any thoughts?
