Is it time to start taking Brock Holt seriously? When looking at his stats, he's been an above average hitter until last year. Maybe because he was older, I dunno.

Depends what we're taking him seriously as. I don't see him as a real option as a major league starter at any position - maybe second base on a second division team. However, if you mean taking him seriously as a major league quality backup infielder who is better than he played last season, yeah I think it's fair to take notice. I don't know what happened to his power last season. He'd had over 30 doubles each of the previous two seasons, then had only 8 in 350 at-bats between Pawtucket in Boston.

Yes, I meant as seriously as being possibly better than Herrera. Although if Ben is lucky, he'll be able to keep him in AAA for 2 more years as depth.

I talked to a Div III coach I know who coached baseball against Heller for 4 years. He said he has a good eye and good plate discipline, but thought the swing he had at Amherst won't play at levels higher than A ball.
Question: Has anyone seen Heller and know if he now has a compact swing or unremarkable swing path (i.e. not inordinately long) or is he just tooling off on FBs in the zone? (it was described to me as loooooong by this coach).

I'm somewhat surprised by his start and, of course, hope he keeps it up, but the game I saw he was somewhat long with his swing. He takes a healthy cut, but was not overly impressive that particular day.

Player IP H R ER BB SO HR ERA Rubby De La Rosa 6.0 4 1 1 1 5 0 1.08
My man Rubby looking good once again! He is actually losing one to zip after the 6th. Looks like the PawSox have the same problem the parent club has.

Not so fast, Vazquez just doubles home Cecchini after he had singled. 1-1 now.

Salem Red Sox ?@salemredsox 14m Kevin Heller might be a fairly unknown prospect, but he's currently third in OBP in all of @milb. ow.ly/vUaDc So far, he's doing a great job of overcoming the stigma of BSOHL.

When I look at Ranaudo, Webster, Owens and Rubby it is hard for me to see another Lester, Buch, Peavy or Lackey in the group let alone a Tanaka or Pineda. The extremely early returns on Ball appear to be less than eye-popping too. Of course my recent optical check-up showed that I was nearsighted at 20-400. I hope that I am wrong but I think that we may have to pony up to compete in the pitching department down the road. The hated Yankees seem to have a bottomless source of money and we appear to be drawing the strings given Pedey's contract and Lester's guestimate offer.

Hernandez with another strong start.
Still could contribute as a lefty specialist and long man.

Ruby is very much overlooked because he's no longer a " prospect". Remember last year was his first year with a new org. His first year back "healthy" after TJS and healthy and this year is his first normal year with a good offseason.
He still has top not potential.

He gets talked about an awful lot for a guy that is underrated. I think most people have him in the same tier as Barnes/Webster/Ranaudo/Workman.

Salem 10th starts SO, err, walk, err, 8 runs so far. What is the record for most unearned runs in inning? with no earned runs?

Holt is a serious man on a serious mission. There must be some other way to get the job done without including Roberts in the equation. A bad platoon is better than a bad player.
Holt could platoon with a slumping Middlebrooks after Herrera goes on the DL.

I'm starting to think Lin and Asuaje might become a decent middle infield combo. They appear to be coming into their own a little this year.

Asuaje is 4th in the league in BA, SA, and OPS, and 9th in OBP. However, looking at the OPS leaderboard and skipping over guys who are tool old for the league, after league leader Ryan McMahon, the Rockies' #8 prospect, the next 5 guys are not on their team's depth charts in the BA handbook. So most of the guys off to great starts have not been regarded as prospects. Still, a .357 / .438 / .595 start is encouraging. He needs to sustain it for a while longer before it becomes truly interesting.

Agreed Eric, and he is 22 already and was only drafted #11. To be drafted #11 by the Sox is like a 6th round choice though now in the Sox approach and he is solid overall. Guys can emerge at that level. He's not that far from becoming a top 40 prospect for us I would think.
He's starting to drive the ball. That's always a good sign.
