Middlebrooks/Roberts no Victorino. He was on the bench in Boston last evening.

Just a means nothing comment but every time I see Heiker's name on a lineup card I hope the Sox do the right thing and give him a callup someday. This September would be cool. If there's an organizational guy that deserves that honor it's him. The lifetime health policy wouldn't hurt either.
I'm getting close to feeling that way about Spring as well.

Ive been a Heiker fan since he put up good numbers in 2011 punching way out of his weight class as injury fill-in. Im not entirely convinced he cant have some use as a AAA-AAAA player.
Im also wondering if Middlebrooks may not be back up in Boston as soon as he thinks. Holt may be a better option right now. Interested to see how these next few games go.

I didn't pay any attention to Meneses until I saw him in ST this year. He fielded well, and had a couple of good at-bats. I know he's been an org guy, but he's also young young young... 23 in July. This year is the first time in a while he's been age-appropriate, so it's time to start paying attention to the results and to see what he looks like at Pawtucket.

Holt's at-bats were verrrry encouraging...excellent eye and working counts. That does it for me.

Keep going with Holt until he stops hitting. Then go to Middlebrooks.

Keep going with Holt until he stops hitting. Then go to Middlebrooks. I'm inclined to agree with this. Holt has a .310/.373/.392 line in 491 Triple-A plate appearances. In 362 Pawtucket PA's, Middlebrooks is at .263/.315/.482. Middlebrooks' power obviously gives him the higher upside, but I think there's a good chance Holt is a better player right now.

It's time to call Anthony Renaudo what he is - a lukewarm prospect. Maybe a 5th starter next year. Not worth the hype.

Keep going with Holt until he stops hitting. Then go to Middlebrooks. I mean that kind of logic makes sense only up until a certain point. At what point can you determine if Holt has stopped hitting. The first time he goes 0-4? Maybe something more substantial like 1-20 skid? Probably an even larger sample size? Bottom line, in order to make switch because one player got cold basically means you have to live through that cold spell which isn't ideal either. The sox need to make an evaluation or player comparison thats independent of a player's recent hot or cold streak.

After the velocity uptick last start, this definitely not what we wanted to see out of Ranaudo this start but it's still only one start. Interesting ninth for Wilson, 8 pitch inning including a strikeout.

Holt is probably a better fielder also, and why not go with the hot hand? We need every player we can right now to hit. After Holt cools off for 6-7 games and assuming Middlebrooks is hitting well in AAA, then consider bringing up Middlebrooks. It's not that I think Holt is the better player, or believe is SSS to an extreme degree, but when a guy is going good why hurry to demote him? Why fix what isn't broken?
Especially when the fix went O for 3 last night with 3 K in AAA.

When is it time to rethink Alex Wilson? It's only 8 innings so far, but he's got better than a K-per-inning and is getting groundballs, too (1.6 GO/AO). I remember reading something about his refining his two-seamer and going to that as his bread-and-butter, I think.
Anyway, too small a sample right now (and he had 5 walks in just 8 innings), but something to pay attention to going forward
edit: was it a split-finger? I'm forgetting now what he supposedly learned/perfected

It wouldn't hurt to use him as the mop up type guy and see if we can build some value in him. He probably is never going to be worth a lot but why not give him a few innings this year and see? We can bring him up and send him down as needed.

Holt is probably a better fielder also, and why not go with the hot hand? I disagree with that. But I think the difference is close enough that I'd take the better bat, and I think Holt is currently a better hitter. I also think 200 Triple-A at-bats would do Middlebrooks a lot of good. I think they rushed him in 2012 when Youkilis broke instead of sticking to his development schedule. I don't think it will make or break him as a player, but I think a few trips through the IL, where there are some veteran pitchers who change speeds and sequence pretty well, would be a help for him.
