Well it took 20 games, but Mookie now has more walks than strikeouts. This is what I thought might happen. He's put enough hurt on the league, that we'll probably see more than a few pitchers avoid throwing anything near the plate. The discipline he's shown in the past should re-emerge, and the OBP stay high even as the AVG goes down. Add: ...then again some pitchers never learn as he bags another XBH with a double.

I also think the fact that he's doing this in cold ass Portland in April has been overlooked. California may not be Aruba but it's certainly not New England .

Betts and Marrero on base a combined 7 time with one out in the 5th. Mookie stole his 9th base, too. It's getting ridiculous with him.

Brentz's "nice little run" continues, hits his third home run. His k rate during this stretch is about 25%, with the ks coming in clusters in a few games. Is the weather still rough back there?

Webster with a nice start. Thru 5 nine ground ball outs, 66 pitches, only one run and an equally only one k.
A ground ball machine seems to be his best destiny. A less holy or poor souls Masterson, if you will.

Absolutely right on Brentz. He got off to a terrible start but is now up to .265 range and has 17 rbis (cough, cough). The guy does drive in runs despite all the new age skeptics that say those stats mean nothing. Big bat, stronger than Bradley arm, reasonable fielder. If he can be a bit more selective....

A less holy or poor souls Masterson, if you will. That's a nice comparison that you brought to my attention. Both are big guys with lots of ball movement, are horses with some borderline control issues. I would love to see Masterson back with the Sox someday.

Has anybody done an analysis of what Brentz swings at and misses and hits? Does he mostly chase or is that he just swings through and misses pitches in the zone?

While we're at it, how about all those new age skeptics on the alleged utility of the horseless carriage? Once they crawl out of their Mother's root cellar, then maybe we'll talk.

Kevin Thomas ?@clearthebases 22m DH Sean Coyle leaving the game for unknown reasons. Stefan Welch steps in Coyle left the game on 4/21 after an HBP, missed games on 4/22 and 4/24, DH'ed on 4/25 and 4/26, and got yesterday off. My guess is that whatever happened on that HBP flared up.

Isn't it obvious? He's afraid of the ball. Bull Meechum: I am Santini, the Great Santini. Bull Meechum: I come from behind the moon, out of the dark, unannounced. Bull Meechum: Watch out!

Betts getting on base 4 out of 5 AB, against the Phils #1 pitching prospect. And 2 more SB. Great game again.

You know a guy is having a great year when his big, puzzling, head-scratching, what-the-heck-is-wrong-with-him? slump consists of going .273 / .261 / .500 over 4 games.

I'm not so sure that, in general, it's a wise strategy to walk a runner with plus plus base running skills and borderline plus speed except in unusual situations, go ahead runner on second base, for example. From what I've seen, pitchers are attempting to pitch to different zones and mix things up. I didn't see today's game but if it follows recent patterns, they were likely trying to 'nibble' and mix it up, inside/outside/up/down. ADD: His CAREER sb% is now 88.4% His CAREER BB/K ratio is now 1.294 ...... Ben Badler ?@benbadler 4h Mookie Betts with a double and three walks tonight. Mookie Bonds. Ray ?@lcbf 2m @benbadler Not a great strategy, 2 SB and 3 runs for a career 89.4% basethieif. <<<<<<(LOL, word OOPS)

He must be working on pitching to contact before he goes ahead and strikes people out that he needs to. Probably a very smart thing to do for him if that's the case. Trying to strike everybody out doesn't last too long.
