With Lavarnway and Iglesias combining to go 5-for-8 AND the Red Sox losing, Christmas has come early! Thats exactly what I want to see, prospects getting acclimated with the sawx tanking.

Iglesias with 3 hits including his 1st MLB HR has to bring a smile to everyone's face Andrew Bailey promptly wipes it off.

Congrats to Jose Iglesias! Hopefully this is a sign of things to come (hits, I couldnt care less if he hits hrs or not) and JP Howell should be embarrassed, and I'm not joking Iglesias may not hit more than 10 hrs in his life and he just gave up numero uno.

Vicente Padilla, ladies and gentlemen.
Guess his "skill" at stranding runners and not allowing HR has worn off.

Last night's game was very positive for 8 innings. Iglesias and Lavarnway were excellent. One thing I was really pleased with was how Lavarnway worked with Buchholz. He seemed to be very "quiet" behind the plate. No over-reactions. He showed soft hands and an excellent target all night. They were just playing catch. It flowed really well. I'll admit I was one who wanted Tek to go ahead and retire, but we can see he had a settling affect on our staff and called a great game.....even more so after this season. He gave them confidence. Ryan Lavarnway has made significant strides in his craft. Yes, for 8 innings I saw GOOD baseball for once. The defense, other than Valentine's experiment in center, looked solid. The pitching from Buchholz looked great, and they were actually seeing more pitches and making Price work. We started looking like a baseball team again, and then the 9th happened. I rather look at last night's game as something to build on!

Steve, you are ever the optimist. There's a lot of negativity on the board these days - understandable with the struggles (to put it mildly), so it's good to see some people are still really enthusiastic when there are positives.
You're right about Lavarnway, too. I'm glad he got the chance to work with Buchholz. It was frustrating, as he seemed to be working most frequently with Matsuzaka - a pitcher who almost certainly will not be back in 2013. The Red Sox front office needs to see how Lavarnway works with the guys coming back to get a handle on what they want to do with the roster next season (a point Tim Britton made in his excellent ProJo piece last week).
Buchholz's second half has been one of the few positives since the break, but he's still not getting strikeouts, even when his stuff is on. He has only 60 K's in 88.1 innings in the second half.

Really appreciate it James! I like what I'm seeing. The 4 game series in my backyard was positive for 3 of the 4 games. Now I want a great draft position as much as anyone on the board, but there were some reasons for optimism. Looking forward to seeing the kids in Ft Myers also!

James, it hasn't just been Buchholz' second half.
After his 5 run, 3.2 inning debacle against Baltimore on May 6th (remember the "Demote Buchholz!" calls?) Buchholz has thrown to a 3.08 era in 149 innings with a .652 ops against.
He's not the shut down strikeout pitcher we all throught he'd be but he really has developed into a great front of the rotation starter. If only he and Lester could figure out April. . .
