I'll be interested to watch Chris Archer pitch. Some people think he's better suited for the bullpen but they have him starting. I haven't seen him pitch yet so that's what I'll be watching for.

It's the only race that matters - the battle for a top 11 draft spot (as of 9/17am):
#6 MIA -- #7 BOS 1.0 GB #8 KC 1.5 GB (wins tiebreaker with NYM based on 2011 record) #9 PIT (compensation pick due to failure to sign Mark Appel) #10 NYM 1.5 GB #11 TOR 2.0 GB #12 SEA 5.0 GB
All teams have 15 games left, except KC/NYM who each have 16 games left. KC and TOR have Monday night off.
Note: the top 11 draft picks are protected and cannot be lost.
It should be noted that BOS loses the tiebreaker with any team.

He's getting another start because they wanted to give the starters an extra day. They're in the middle of a 13-game stretch with no off days.

Iglesias with a productive AB. Note to the manager: improvement in his AB's is why you give him more AB's.....more complete AB's.
Also, for the record, the Rays should be moved to another city. Way too good of a team to be wasting away in front of crowds like this....

" Lay down like a.... " ------------------------------------
It's not enough. Tampa sucks. Go Felix (I think). One freakin hit. What a weird atmosphere: they don't have the usual noise pollution tonight. It's there but not the volume.

Wouldn't it be a final indignity to this very difficult season if the team couldn't even tank the season productively enough to protect their draft pick?

Jarrod Saltalamacchia's pitch handling hasn't improved, and was especially poor last night. He was continually stabbing at balls, and losing a lot of strikes for his pitchers. There was one especially egregious one, by Mortensen in the 7th inning. In the Matt Joyce AB, Mortensen threw a pretty sweet change-up just above the knees. It was moving slightly away from Joyce, a left-handed batter, but this wasn't exactly Greg Maddux english on the change-up. It landed on the outer-third and above the knees, but Salty really darted at it, and it was called a ball.
That specific pitch ended up being unimportant, as Joyce ended up popping out to Iglesias, but this was just the most clear example of a pitch, clearly within the strike zone, that Saltalamacchia caught awkwardly and lost his pitcher's strike call.

Off topic, I went to look up the past tense of 'smite' so that I used it properly, and came up with this from urban dictionary: If we have a button for that now, I'm going to be spending a lot more time on this forum....

Something has to be physically wrong with Bard, right? Just rear back and throw it shouldn't be effected by mechanical changes. He can't even throw balls within 5 MPH of his former FB, let alone find the strikezone with anything

If it was mechanical would not the Sox over a year have figured it out? This is depressing. Hopefully, it is just a tired arm....Worst case is that Bard is hiding an injury to stay in the game. Heck, Tazawa now throws 96. Why not do some medical studies. I remember that Bard's velocity dropped at the end of last year...not to the current mph but it did drop.

Bard is just so lost out there. Shouldn't he just be shut down and see you in February?

Sorry, James Dunne, I got distracted.
The other night Remy was vocal about Iglesias getting pinch-hit for with the 2-2 count and then tonight when Ellsbury squared and fouled off pitch one in the third with two on. Called into question why Ellsbury would be bunting when he is basically their offense lately. Tempered it a bit by saying it must have been Ellsbury's idea, but seemed really bothered by it......

Really sad to watch Bard these day. Is he hurt? Why do they keep running him out there?

Bard is just so lost out there. Shouldn't he just be shut down and see you in February? It's mechanics. He's just flinging the ball. Not coming over the top. And, can't sustain a release point. I guess it could be a shoulder issue not allowing him to do that. But, it's mechanics. Loses MPH on his fastball and his slider doesn't have that downard spin he used to have. Our whole f'n stuff has no command of their pitches. Took Buchholz a dozen starts to get his release point. Still loses it at times. Lester can't locate his fastball. Doubront looks like he's on the chicken and beer diet. Kid needs a trainder. Loses his control too easily. I wonder how seriously these guys take their craft. Hate to be blunt about it. But, that's what it looks like to me. I have MLB extra innings and pitchers all over the league can locate their pitches. Ours can't. We have a bunch of guys with good arms who aren't able to do it.

Interesting line-up tonight.
Here's a preview of the game:
RED SOX (68-82) Ciriaco CF Pedroia 2B Ross DH Lavarnway C Gomez 1B Aviles 3B Nava RF Podsednik LF Iglesias SS Pitching: RHP Clay Buchholz (11-6, 4.33)
Ciriaco in center? Interesting! Aviles (finally) at 3rd? Very interesting!

"Red Sox will recall 3B Danny Valencia and RHPs Pedro Beato and Zach Stewart from Triple-A Pawtucket in time for Friday's series opener against the Orioles." www.rotoworld.com/playernews/mlb/baseball-player-news/No Lin. Surprised nobody else. Buchholz. I am calling this an exhibition game with TB way back now. 4th exhibition game in a row for Buchholz. He'll get TB again in his next start, so make it 5 in a row. Better use Dice-K vs. O's. Don't want to scare anyone into thinking these games mean anything.

Scorecenter says "J Iglesias homered to left."
I've kinda tuned the Sox out for the last few weeks, but that made me double-take.
