When the game resumes Devers with 2/2 in the bank. He's currently hitting .393/.449/.623/1.072 without the 2 hits. He's 12 PA from qualifying for the GCL leaderboard but if he was qualified, he'd be leading the league in all 4 slashes. Highest qualified OPS is .920.

If you folks are super excited about what Devers is doing after 61 at bats in the GCL, shouldn't you be equally concerned with Michael Chavis' .350 OPS at the GCL when Chavis is actually a year older than Devers? Chavis has 41 at bats. I personally think neither is meaningful.

Chavis has 41 at bats. I personally think neither is meaningful. Both have good scouting reports. Devers' reports have been good beginning in ST, through XST, the DSL, and the GCL. In fact, they've been off the charts from what I can gather. His good hitting is just a bonus on top of that, an affirmation that his makeup and mechanics can play. Chavis' scouting reports were against lower competition, but he certainly still has lots of time to get aclimated to professional baseball, and to improve his own game generally. He seems to have the skills, talent and athleticism that is required to hit a baseball, but we could be fooled, or he could get hurt, or stop working hard, or just be less good at something than we thought/imagined/projected. WAY too early to tell one way or the other though.

GCL Red Sox had a four-pitcher perfect game against GCL Orioles today. . . . Not a surprise: timdierkes ?@timdierkes 15m Andres Torres exercised the out clause in his contract on Saturday. 36-year-old OF had been with Pawtucket Red Sox for 18 games.

Was at the game(s) today but left early. Steveof Bradenton was also in attendance and can give a much more complete report. Not to steal thunder but Chavis' one hop double to left center field fence was a highlight in the second game and Trenton Kemp blasted a grand slam to left-center against about a 10 mph wind. Kemp also hit a deep one-hop drive off the left-center fence in his prior at-bat. He absolutely looks like an athlete. He is lean and very fluid in running. Cosart was hitting 94-95, Villareal 97 and, reportedly, Pimentel was in the upper 90s.
Also at the game were the parents of Zachary Albin a 2014 draft pick of the Orioles as a RHP. Of interest his mother was a college roommate of Dan McGrath's mother and was a day care provider for Matt Barnes. Dan's last name is pronounced as if McGraw (in Australian of course). She said that Dan had been offered more money from the Twins (also talked with the Yankees) but Dan's mother was a Red Sox fan originally from Rhode Island, he had played in Red Sox oriented activities in Australia and wanted to sign with Boston. He asked if the Sox could break $400,000 in their offer to pass that barrier even tho still less than the Twins' offer. The Sox did and the deal was sealed. Both Dan and Matt Barnes speak very highly of the Red Sox organization, how they have been treated and the help offered.
Fixed! Thanks Josh!!

Handled 2 routine plays and one difficult one where he had to come in on a roller and showed a very strong and accurate arm. Kemp's grand slam was a blast. As mentioned in earlier reports, he is pretty athletic and certainly needs watching. REALLY liked what I saw from Cosart. His mechanics were repeated and clean. His breaking ball has lots of bite to it. His fastball was impressive as he kept pounding the strike zone. 2 very nice innings. I know I've said this before, but I really like Javier Guerra.

I wasn't exactly sure where to put this since the game day threads get locked soon after, so hopefully here is okay. I went to the Portland game on 7/25 when Brian Johnson had 12 K's in a 1-0 win, and put together a little video of 2 AB's from both Swihart and Coyle, and Johnson's final K of the night. Johnson was sitting 87-89 and touching 90 at some points, but god knows how accurate that is w/ the reliability of stadium guns. I'd say 10 of his 12 K's came off his curveball which had batters off balance all night. He left a few fastballs up in the zone that resulted in deep flyouts, but outside of that everything was down in the zone. A couple of other random observations (Disclaimer: I'm no scout) I liked Coyle's batspeed, but you can see the swing and miss in his swing, especially on off speed pitches. Swihart's athleticism was on full display w/ a thrown out runner, three singles, and a SB. Almanzar looks pretty bad in the field, my guess is he gets a cup of coffee elsewhere, not in Boston. Finally, De La Cruz looked pretty awful against offspeed pitches, he seemed to lunge at them numerous times. When I saw him in Lowell I liked what I saw, but the scouts on this site said he didn't have the approach to make any noise as a prospect. I'd have to agree w/ that assessment after seeing him. Blake Swihart, Sean Coyle, Brian Johnson vs. New Britain Rock Cats

In any event, I'll pop in my "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang" DVD and write more happy posts for your benefit. I'm particularly excited for your proposed approach for transitioning Ball to the OF given how he's already flamed out as a pitcher.

In any event, I'll pop in my "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang" DVD and write more happy posts for your benefit. Plus scouting reports from last year's Instructs. Plus scouting reports from Spring Training. Plus a sizeable bonus. Don't confuse "oh cool, this guy is kind of living up to the hype" with "ZOMG U GUYZ THIS GUY IS HAVIN AN AWESOME FIRST MONTH OF HIS CAREER I BET HE'LL WIN AN MVP OR SEVEN" The point made with small sample sizes is also to not let them significantly change your opinion of a player, not that you're not allowed to have any opinion. Chavis's numbers are disappointing so far, sure. Doesn't mean I suddenly think that much differently of him as a prospect. As for Devers, after seeing him in the fall and spring, based on the profile, his current standing within the organization rankings here was within the range of potential possibilities for sure. Probably within the highest reaches therein, but not unthinkable.

Probably within the highest reaches therein, but not unthinkable. Devers was not as physically imposing as I expected.....but then I once stood beside Jack Nicklaus and he was an absolutely boggling 5'9". Devers was listed (on the program) at 6'0 and 195 lbs. The 6 feet is about right but I think he carries a pretty heavy lower body particularly at 17. I would put him at 205 at least. People in attendance say that he has actually slimmed down from last year. Regardless, he is not a gazelle and on discussion among those present, seems more likely to find 1B/DH as an ultimate home. He does have a strong arm with easy wrist flips popped to first during warm-ups. Still apparently he leads the world in errors at this level.

Early but HRs:
Swihart Chester Cecchini (not a misprint)
Kevin Thomas ?@clearthebases 2m And here comes the rain. Dogs up 2-0, one out in the top of the fourth.
Of interest, MFY Refsnyder in RF. I've seen scouting that says bad defense at 2B.
Wright having an off night.
What-r-the-odds. Quick-Draw McGrath thru 2IP 3H including a HR, 3BB but only 1 run. (Yes, I was waiting to use that).
