I know that teams aren't allowed to trade newly acquired free-agents until about June of the next season. Does the same apply to Castillo as a Cuban defector?

The trade rules and limitations apply to all players under contract whether they signed as free agents after defecting or were drafted and signed. edit: a summary of the trade rules shows that players may be traded EXCEPT in the first year after being DRAFTED. Don't have the PA Agreement; just saw it summarized.

Yeah I've got to say, I don't understand our involvement with Castillo unless he can play 3B. CF should be a competition between Mookie and JBJ with the odd man out being dealt this offseason. That still leaves us with Craig, Nava, Cespedes, Vic, and technically Holt. I dunno, if Castillo is a star in their eyes who can't be passed upon, then go for it, but I don't see where he fits in unless he can play 3B. The supposed top two teams to land him are NYY and Boston. Boston already has Ellsbury and Gardner so they don't necessarily need a CF either. Interesting to see how things shake out. Nice Freudian. I still contend Ben should've offered Lester to NYY for Gardner and Betances/Severino. If there really is a "secret deal" then all the better, you get him back and take two of their best. And if not, you got to milk their talent before they bought him, anyway.

George A. King III ?@georgeakingiii Cuba's Rusney Castillo sifting through offers; Phillies seen as favorites nyp.st/1th2Lds Here is the full quote. Very misleading posting parts of it. "According to several teams with interest in the 27-year-old, who hasn’t played an organized game in a year, the Phillies are the favorite. However, that isn’t a consensus." JIm Salisbury is pretty tied into the Phillies so there is a disconnect between they are long shots and favrites... something doesn't add up. I've just had a feeling since Castillo was posted that Ben C. and Larry won't lose out on this one and I still believe that.

Anything under $60 million and I hope the Red Sox sign him.

I want to see both Jay Bruce and Jason Heyward are going to be in the Sox uniform next year? Is that really a fantasy? How can Ben make it come true this winter? Not going to happen. They don't fit the plan here.

I don't think both Allen Craig and Yoenis Cespedes will solve our outfield problem. I expect it will be bad as this year.

On the Olbermann show they were talking about Castillo and he said all points to the Red Sox and Tim Kurkjian agreed. Said tigers are the other big name

"I expect it will be bad as this year." ---------------------------------------- Nothing could be as bad as a platoon LF that didn't hit/field well, a platoon CF that couldn't hit and was a.DFA, b. sent down. And in RF a talented regular who couldn't stay on the field. I feel safe in saying '15 will be better.
I'm not ruling out the nyy for Castillo (as a 2b). They aren't getting a WC or a #1 (they'll be giving it up). If they think he's going to the RS I think they'll bid accordingly IMO.

If Castillo signs tomorrow I would be very surprised if he played a game this season. Betts being called up is another depth option at 2nd base. I don't think they should, cause Betts needs to focus on cf. I expect a few big trade this off-season or several trades. I have a feeling the Yanks, or Detroit may outbid us.

More from that Olbermann segment with Kurkjian on Castillo. Kurkjian said there is a serious question whether Castillo can play CF in the majors, that defense is not his strong point. Kurkjian said Castillo is most similar to Raji Davis, not as good as Puig or Cespedes, but very fast.

Yeah, the Rajai Davis comparison started from Ben Badler I believe? I think the sending down of Bradley was related to Castillo, maybe they think Castillo will be more willing to sign here if we're not showing commitment to Bradley Jr, and he can walk in and play everyday right away... I know there was talk of us starting Jose Abreu in the minors if we signed him, and that might have put us out of the running immediately if so.

They replaced JBJ in CF with their #1 prospect. Not exactly clearing the way for anybody. And Castillo apparently will need a couple weeks in the minors to shake off the rust, so having JBJ in Pawtucket actually "blocks" CF there.
None of this matters from Castillo's perspective. He is going to the highest bidder, like nearly every big free agent does.

So is a Davis like player worth around $50 mil?

I read he has more power than Davis.

I don't believe Cespedes or Craig could handle CF or RF in Fenway, so Betts and Castillo could coexist

Call me crazy but I like the sounds of Castillo in right and Betts in CF.

Crazy. ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png) I wouldn't mind a certain Miami outfielder playing in right instead/either. ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png) Of course we would have to trade an outfielder or two.

dcsoxfan1989:
Does Castillo have the arm for RF? From what I read this is the only element that keeps him from 5-tool. No doubt lots of speed in that OF.

Sahadev Sharma @sahadevsharma Hearing bidding for Rusney Castillo is wild, above $55M. Cubs don't appear to see value in that. May be battle between Detroit & Boston.
I personally don't care about the money. A) It's not mind B) The Red Sox have plenty of it and plenty of flexibility

Over the weekend there were rumors that a decision was near and could come on Monday or Tuesday. Now, John Heyman of CBSSports, says it could be the end of the week. Must be several teams in on it even with the Yanks out to keep the auction going.

I don't really want the Red Sox to win a crazy stupid bidding war for this guy. Everyone should chisel their opinions in stone before it happens.
