8/6 ML Gameday Thread: GCL Red Sox Doubleheader
|
Post by philsbosoxfan on Aug 6, 2014 19:10:05 GMT -5
Sam Travis with a rope double to deep center. No shortage of power there. Drive up 2-0 after 3, Callahan has a no-no going.
Callahan gave up a hit with 2 outs in the forth off a lolipop curve. His secondaries need a lot of work, he's 19, whodathunkit. Fastball looks good and he's found his command of it. Seems to like the gloveside corner against both lefties and righties. Bethea just threw out a runner with another strong throw, I didn't think he'd have a chance, came off a curve.

Great to see 2 of our most intriguing arms pitching well after 3 innings (Kukuk and Callahan). Both youngsters with nice arms but inconsistent. With Trey Ball also, it is nice to see progress!

Great to see 2 of our most intriguing arms pitching well after 3 innings (Kukuk and Callahan). Both youngsters with nice arms but inconsistent. With Trey Ball also, it is nice to see progress! Diaz doing well too. Unusual line though, only 62 pitches through 5 but has 3BBs vs 1K. Unusually low pitch count which is what he was doing at Salem. Another line drive double for Travis. This one to left. He's got to have exceptional pitch recognition skills, you don't see him start to swing at anything that isn't a strike. Impressive, I know SSS but he looks like he'd have no problems with Salem. Looks like the wheels fell off for Diaz in the 6th.

Kukuk - 5IP, 2H, 6/4 K/BB, HBP
Callahan - 5IP, H, 2/4 K/BB, 70 pitches, 38 strikes
SamTrav - 2/2, 2-2B, BB (now 9/18, 4-2B, 2/3 K/BB, .500/.571/.722/1.293)

Callahan pitched the 6th, his longest outing of the year ? Mager with a nice assist for the final out, an off the wall single that the runner tried to stretch.

Since an off day on 6/25 (after his first week as a pro, transitioning back to live pitching and wood bats), SamTrav has hit as follows:
LOW: 51/139, 4-2B, 3B, 4HR, 13/4 K/BB, .367/.385/.496/.881
GRE: 9/18, 4-2B, no 3B/HR, 2/3 K/BB, .500/.571/.722/1.293

His 3rd walk in 19 plate appearances in Greenville. After 4 bb's in 160 plate appearances in Lowell. Go figure.

His 3rd walk in 19 plate appearances in Greenville. After 4 bb's in 160 plate appearances in Lowell. Go figure. The walk was a no brainer, 4 pitch walk that the pitcher wasn't close. His other ABs, he showed a good eye, took a strike on a pitch that should have been called a ball. Margot's second single was a nice inside out single to right field. He then stole second. He looks faster than Ellsbury. The first one was a standard grounder to the SS/3B hole. Comment, watching Bethea, he's a take command catcher. Good to see. Also, Callahan's curve has a ton of arch, it almost looks like a sixties Ephus pitch. He also didn't get many strikes with it, was always too high. Travis Ked in the third AB (4th PA), swinging. If he made contact it would have gone a long way. Lorenzana just took an outside pitch for a linedrive down the right field line. Very nice.

Jhonathan Diaz: 5IP 3H 0ER 0BB 8K. He has been rock solid this year. You usually can't pull much from pitching success in the DSL, but his steady strikeout rate is encouraging. This is Diaz's 5th consecutive game (and 7th out of his last 8) without giving up an earned run. Wow. Talk about under the radar. It's not like he was some diamond in the rough coming into the season ($600k bonus). He just happened to be in the same signing class as Devers. He was hardly ever discussed in the '13 IFA thread (I just looked). Looking around the internet, Badler and Romero had some great insight. Super athletic and coordinated...to the point Badler shared he can throw almost as hard righty as he can lefty. Romero mentioned he's ultra competitive. More interesting, stated his velo was already up a tick at the complex after initial reports were released (high 80's FB with developing CB, CH at the time). Should be a fun guy to follow at instrux next year.

Good news, we may be lined up for Dayan Diaz for an inning or two out of the Portland 'pen as well! And a triple Diaz day it was: Portland Sea Dogs ?@portlandseadogs 6m Dayan Diaz earns the save, the Sea Dogs score 3 run in the 9th and beat Bowie 7-4! Carson Blair GWRBI, Wilkerson big 2-run hit. Quadruple Diaz day if you include Augusta's Diaz. . . . This is Diaz's 5th consecutive game (and 7th out of his last 8) without giving up an earned run. Wow. Talk about under the radar. It's not like he was some diamond in the rough coming into the season ($600k bonus). He just happened to be in the same signing class as Devers. Anyone know what is going on in Salem? It says Matt Gedman just pitched the thirteenth inning with 2K's and a fly out.

Matt Gedman just allowed a dinger, but other than that....not bad.

Built like his dad. He's due up in the bottom of the 14th, could win it for himself. Iirc, a Portland outfielder did that 4 or 5 years ago.

Daniel Gonzalez was the DSL All-Star starter. Jhonathan Diaz did not make the team.

That's funny, I was told he was a non-prospect by somebody a week ago. But I totally agree, Temple. He just seems to have a good approach at the plate from what I've seen of him in the Cape League. I think he was good value where we got him.

Daniel Gonzalez was the DSL All-Star starter. Jhonathan Diaz did not make the team. LOL, I'll take your word for it, tried Googling it, used search here, looked around the DSL website, I give up. You are probably right though. I've been noticing Diaz' performances for a while, I was thinking it was the All Star game that triggered it, most days I don't even look at the boxes and just know a few names from the DSL thread. I'd bet that he's in Portland a year from now.

Devers' slump gets busted. Three run homer. He was 6/34, 2B, 3B, 3 BB, HBP (.176 / .263 / .265) at the time. Let's hope he goes on another tear. In the meantime he hit ... .337 in the DSL with 6 2B, 3 3B, and 3 HR for a .538 SA, with 20 SO in 104 AB. He's hit ... .337 in the GCL with 7 2B, 2 2B, and 3 HR for a .541 SA, with 19 SO in 98 AB. (The big difference is in walks, 21 versus 9).

I guess those scouting reports aren't as good in the GCL.

Not bad!
