Just realized we didn't have a thread dedicated to this year's top pick.
Just noticed that the move of Chavis off of shortstop may already be happening.
First 17 games: 9 starts at SS, 8 starts at DH Next 9 games: 5 starts at 3B, 3 starts at DH, 1 start at SS
Now, given the complications on the left side of the GCL infield between him, Devers, and Guerra, there may be other issues in play here, but they're at the very least making a concerted effort to acclimate him to third base, even if it's only to help alleviate that playing time pressure that was leading to him and Guerra needing to split all of the shortstop reps.
------
Also, an exercise in arbitrary endpoints, but he appears to be acclimating at the plate:
First 11 games: 2 for 36, 2 2B, 4 BB/15 K, .056/.150/.111 Next 15 games: 15 for 44, 6 2B, 8 BB/12 K, .341/.453/.477

pumped up about this guy, good fortune for us to get by most (best hs hitter) at the point in draft we did. Hope he develops.

Guy seems to like cranking doubles, huh?
I'm excited to see how he progresses. I'm glad that he's gotten over his adjustment period, one that admittedly shouldn't have worried anyone but was ugly nonetheless.

Between the "amazing athlete, huge raw power, maybe we can teach him how to hit" class of prospect and the "less than ideal physical profile, but has a natural ability to spray line drives all over the place" types, I have a strong bias towards the latter. Obviously it's very early with Chavis, but when I look at his SP profile and see him listed at 5-10 and "may have best hit tool in the draft"... oh hell yeah. That's my guy.

Just realized that he and Devers are basically going to be on the same developmental time table at the same position..... Awkwaaaarrd.

Totally with you there. "Maybe we can teach this guy the most important skill in baseball" is a pretty big reach no matter how athletic they are. I think a lot of the time, they're either born with the ability to hit or not. They need eyesight that can pick up the spin on a ball faster than anyone else and hand-eye coordination to match. I don't believe the eyesight to pick up movement (not stationary objects) goes along with athleticism in a meaningful way. I'm sure science will figure out how to predict it better at some point soon.

I'm thinking Devers will initially get priority at 3B, mainly because I think Chavis can actually play somewhere other than 1B. So that said, I think maybe Chavis plays 2B.

Seeing the problems with adjusting betts to the outfield, I wonder if we shouldn't pick some of the if prospects sooner at the of, whilst we have that luxury

Chavis now well above the Mendoza line, or in the GCL the .201 Jeter line, and actually a bit on fire. Now at .227 average.

I think our past two first round picks are clear examples of the need to be patient with these kids.
Probably just an odd coincidence, but Trey Ball took about 14 Pro Ball starts before we were able to see improvement. And Chavis too about 17 games to show marked improvement.
We sometimes forget that these guys are literally still kids. They aren't just adjusting to professional baseball, but also life away from home in general.

We sometimes forget that these guys are literally still kids. They aren't just adjusting to professional baseball, but also life away from home in general. When I spoke with Michael's dad yesterday he even mentioned that his boy was finally figuring things out and has a much better idea of what to expect going forward. It is hard to watch a kid fail in the GCL and see the potential never less. But their growth from 18 to 23 is incredible physically and, maybe more importantly, mentally. You can see how important it is for them to have 800 to over 1000 at-bats or 400 to 500 innings pitched. They're babies with too much expectations. Poppa Chavis went on to talking about all of his traveling and tournament teams and how they are at it for 9 to 10 months now-a-days. A funny thing was his continued insistence of telling the football coach in Marietta to forget it.....he isn't playing!

Chavis 2-2 today, officially up to .233, but with the suspended game, he has another 2 for 2 in the bank for tomorrow's resumption giving him a 23/92, i.e. .250 average. He gave me a scare there for the first three weeks.

Also, an exercise in arbitrary endpoints, but he appears to be acclimating at the plate: First 11 games: 2 for 36, 2 2B, 4 BB/15 K, .056/.150/.111 Next 15 games: 15 for 44, 6 2B, 8 BB/12 K, .341/.453/.477 Why stop there? First 11 games: .056 /.150 / .111 (40 PA), 4 BB / 15 K, also 3 GDP (none since) Next 7 games: .261 / .370 / .348 (27 PA), 3 BB / 8 K Last 10.5 games: .469 / .541 / .656 (37 PA), 5 BB / 6 SO And in terms of the endpoints being arbitrary, I thought I heard Morgan Freeman say that the above corresponded to using 10%, 20%, and 30% of the brain.

So what are you saying, Chavis will turn into a flash drive by season's end? I'd rather he turn into a greenville drive next year.

It seems that the guy feels totally comfortable at the plate, has made the necessary adjustments. Today's doubleheader he went 8-6, 1 2B, 1 HR, 2 RBI, 1 R, raising his average to .268

There were a number of really good players on the GCL team this year, much more than normal. That bodes well for the future. Chavis hit a ton right at the end of the season.

Several intriguing prospects indeed. I think a couple of those pitchers could make the leap to Greenville next season. Not sure where devers plays next season, but he is intriguing as well.

Apparently Bo Porter and Astros' players made a fuss cause Mark Appel came up to Houston and threw a bullpen session. They didn't think he deserved it or something.

Kiley McDaniel at Fangraphs has given tool grades to all 2014 first rounders. He gives Chavis future tools of 50 hit, 55 game power, 60 raw power, 50 speed, 50+ field, 60 throw, and a 50 Future Value. It's hard not be happy with that given where we were picking.
