Congrats on a first trip! Hard to make any suggestions about seating without knowing your budget, but you should be able to get tix well below face value. I'd look for field box or loge between the bases, if I were you--though you may need to wait until closer to the series for the best prices. Precise Seating has pretty solid info on the view from various seats, though StubHub does all right in that regard. I'd avoid the right field corner--the sections right next to the bleachers are OK, but much of the corner faces the Monster instead of the infield. Edit: actually, the Red Sox website now does pretty well with seat views, too.

I usually haggle with the scalpers. The market is different every game. I went on Thursday night - mid-week game between two lousy teams - and decent tickets were hard to come by. I ended up with 3B concourse standing room. Other times, you can go to a game that seems like it would be more attractive and there are plenty of decent grandstand seats on the street.
If you go the scalper route, shop the street and don't be intimidated. No need to be polite, as these guys tend to be dregs. If someone offers you a price you don't like, just walk away. Don't pay more than $75 per grandstand seat or more than about $50 for SR or bleachers. Most of the scalpers hang out between the Kenmore train station and the Cask & Flagon.
Also, never accept a scalper's first offer. Always try to get $10-$15 knocked off. They'll usually do it.
Another option is the scalp-free zone outside CF on Lansdowne Street. People with tix to sell line up there and, under the supervision of a kid who works for the RS, sell their tix at face value. You have to pay cash and enter Fenway as soon as you make your purchase. I think the scalp-free zone opens 90 minutes before game time.
As far as seats go, I'd say field boxes or loge boxes (if you want to spend that kind of coin) and grandstand seats between roughly grandstand sections 12 and 28 or so are good. If you buy grandstands, try to be in the middle of the row - seats 8 to about 18 are best - because it lessens your chances of getting blocked by a pole.
And finally, no matter who you buy from, check the tix to make sure they are not osbstructed view.
Good luck.

I've only been once and was worried about getting a good seat, too. I ended up getting a great price on some 1st row loge box seats a that were marked "obstructed view: high traffic" or something like that. Honestly, I couldn't have asked for better seats. Traffic was never really an issue and I was able to spread out my legs more than a normal seat (I'm almost 6'5"). Good luck.

Given that you are going mid week you should be able to get decent seats for at or below face value given that the Red Sox are not in contention for a playoff spot. Check Ace a Tickets and Stub Hub. I would recommend bleacher seats for one game. You could also look to find a better seat as the game progresses as there are plenty of no shows when the Red Sox are out of it. Stay away from the right field grand stands as the seats, particularly sections 10 to 4 face towards the outfield and you might need to see a chiropractor after watching one game. Make sure you try the Cask and Flagon and the Baseball Tavern before the games. Have fun.
