Hypothetically, say we don't trade for Agon- Where would Kelly rank among our starters? He was fairly highly thought of while he was here, which makes me curious as to whether that was due to a weak system or if he truly would rank among the better of our prospects in a stacked system now

Kelly would fit in well, as he is disabled, and as of yet has not fulfilled his promise or hype. Trades are funny and sometimes you never know the results for some time. The winner of the Gonzalez trade was probably the Cubs as they ended up with Rizzo. We dumped Gonzalez, and San Diego late traded Rizzo to the cubs for someone who never delivered. Fuentes is still laboring in the minors, now in the Pacific Coast League and meh.

Kelly would likely rank in the 8-12 range, if prospect eligible (in the same neighborhood as Ranaudo and Barnes). He doesn't have a plus pitch but has three average or better pitches.
BTW, Rizzo was traded for Andrew Cashner, a cost-controlled #2-3 starter. To say Cashner didn't deliver is totally incorrect.
Egads.

Cashner got hurt this year, but the kid is legit and can pitch.

Cashner isn't nothing, but in three years with the Padres he's averaged 99 IP a season with a 113 ERA+, whereas Rizzo is one of the best young hitters in the game.

Well, he didn't say Cashner was just as good as Rizzo. But the original point made it seem like Cashner was some nobody, which is not remotely true. By the way, to use his average IP to show anything is extremely misleading - he was a reliever in his first season with the Pads and only was moved into the rotation full time after the start of last season. If you want to evaluate Cashner that way, you'd probably have to compare it to Rizzo's .260/.345/.459, which is very good but also ignores the improvement over that time.
As for Kelly, I think Amfox has it about right. I'd probably put him somewhere in 8-10 on my personal list, and between Rodriguez and Ranaudo for the pitchers.

The trade for Gonzalez also helped move the contracts of Beckett and Crawford. It's become a very complex deal to judge because the pieces were then moved in other deals
But it sure would be nice to have Rizzo right now, but close to as bad to still have the Crawford deal
