After his big jump in the rankings (31 spots?!?!), I checked in with the esteemed Ben Badler via Twitter to get his take. @mattdaigle I've liked him a lot since his amateur days. Very good defender and the bat has come along quickly. I look forward to his continued development...

Boy.....next year's GCL team may be really interesting. Certainly believe Margot may be there, Romero, Almonte (?), and hopefully Wendell Rijo. I forgot Suarez as the catcher!

I'll be stunned if Margot isn't in Lowell.

What I expect is ..
Margot in Lowell (great scouting report) Wendell Rijo in GCL (very advanced) Almonte in DSL or GCL (projectable but raw)

Looks like Margot is putting in a solid performance in his first exposure in the States. Not much extra base power has shown yet, but walk and strikeout numbers look promising for such a young player. Would love to see a first hand scouting report.

Margot has been injured and has fallen a bit out of the limelight, but he's still one of the most exciting position players in the lower levels of the organization. Here's a great article from David Laurila, with quotes from Margot, Lowell coach Noah Hall, and Ben Crockett.

Ian Cundall has gotten a few looks at him in Lowell and wrote up a Scouting Scratch in late July.

Margot at age 18 has held his own in the NYPL. I am going to assume that is not something that whole lot of people have done. Currently from a statistical standpoint, I could only find seven position players who were born in 1994, had at least 100 PAs in the NYPL this year, and compared statistically with Margot. Lin, Cousins, Kelly, N. Rodriguez, H. Ramirez, E. Escobar, Espinal. Margot seems to have a better K/W ratio than a lot of these players.
Given his age and performance this year, I would have to assume that when the Top Ten rankings for the NYPL come out that Margot will be on it, maybe even near the top.

Can we get the mods to change the title of this thread to "Waiting for Margot"?

Saw him play in Lowell the other night. Turned in a good performance with the bat and on defense.

Margot was impressive today, smooth stroke. I sat first row, right at the on deck circle and he said hello to my 3 year old.....very cool.

surprised Margot is out of the top 20. Agreed. I think he's ahead of Wilson and Denney right now. I like him in the mix of Brian Johnson, Betts and Stankiewicz. On pure upside as an 18 year old I think he would rank just outside the top 10. In reality though he's not that far away from approaching the top 10. You have to figure by this time next year Bogaerts and Bradley Jr graduate from the list. You also have a chance that Workman or Britton could graduate if they start the year in the Boston pen. Wouldn't be shocked to see a prospect or two ahead of him traded in the offseason or at the All-Star break if the right player becomes available. And perhaps unlikely but if all those happened you would have 5 or 6 players off the list and Margot would be sitting 14 or 15 without "passing" anyone. Greenville is going to be so much more watchable next season with the likes of Margot patrolling CF. I expect a big year from in 2014 aided by a little physical development. Onward and upward Manuel.

He was hitting .254 / .343 / .307 (32 G, 138 PA) when he went on the DL on July 24 -- except for the BB rate, more "not sucking" than impressing, in terms of performance.
In the seven games and ten days since returning, he's gone 15/32, 2 2B, 3B, HR, 2 BB (.469 / .500 / .688) to lift his line to a genuinely impressive .301 / .375 / .390.
Personally, I feel this is huge. The dreams of prospect lovers are haunted by the still, silent corpses of players who had great tools but, for one reason or another, simply never did much on the field. While you always give a guy in his first pro (stateside) year a mulligan, a good performance is still very much preferable to an unimpressive one.
He also seems to be catching a hugely high percentage of balls in the air that have been scored as being to CF, as Clay Davenport's methodology has turned that data into a +33 runs per 150 games rating. It's always good when the actual results match the scouting reports.

Nothing new, but encouraging words from BA: "Manuel Margot, cf, Red Sox: Margot was a highly-regarded prospect when the Red Sox signed him two years ago out of the Dominican Republic, where his tools, athleticism and instincts all stood out. He showed the tools could translate to games last year in the Dominican Summer League and made such a strong impression on the Red Sox that they skipped him over the Rookie-level Gulf Coast League and jumped him to short-season Lowell. Yesterday Margot, 18, went 4-for-4 with a double, a triple and a walk, bringing him to .301/.375/.390 through 39 games. Throw in premium defense in center field and the Red Sox have one of their most exciting Dominican prospects in years." www.baseballamerica.com/minors/prospect-notebook-jonathan-gray-looks-electric-for-rockies/Link also includes an excerpt on Mookie.

Margot showing legit power! 2 of his 3 homers were crushed and were absolute no doubters while the 3rd (2nd in the order) was hit very well to deep left center. The first 2 he was ahead in the count and jumped on the pitches in his zone. The 3rd he jumped on the pitchers first pitch right in his zone. He seems to have an advanced feel for hitting and has a really aggressive swing. Love this kid!! Buxton who?

Manuel Margot makes an appearance on BP's Monday Morning Ten Pack (written up by Tucker Blair). Here's an excerpt: There's a little video, as well:

People are skeptical of minor league fielding metrics, but they use the same methodology as Total Zone, which is good enough to be listed at b-ref and is in fact the standard for the era immediately before BIS and STATS zone evaluation data. You can get a very good sense of how good an OFer is by simply counting the balls he catches versus the fly ball and line drives hit to his position, and making a set of adjustments based on his park, pitching staff, and so on.
Margot now has 110 games in CF. Baseball Prospectus has him at +26/150 G, while Clay Davenport has him at +29.

I didn't found a thread where we can discuss one of my favorite prospects in the system: Manuel Margot, so I thought "why not creat one?" I'll start the conversation by saying this: During the trade line period, there was a name mentionned a lot as piece some of the posters here would like to get as a return for Lester and it's Josh Bell. Well, i think that Margot is a better prospect than the Pirates OFer! Here's my logic: When you compare both guys core hitting stats they're pretty similar
| Age | League | PA | BB% | K% | ISO | Josh Bell | 19 and 20* | SAL | 585 | 9.2% | 19% | .168 | Manuel Margot | 19 | SAL | 391 | 9% | 12% | .160 |
*Repeated the level Actually, Margot looks better when you consider those stats from age advancement perspective! Some might say that Bell's first season was cut short by a knee injury but he has the age (read: physical growth) in his second season and more familiarity with the league and here's the most important thing: Margot is a much better runner, he's also a plus fielder in a up-the-middle position and Bell's a corner OFer with suspicious defense that will get worse with his projected added weight. Forget the huge signing bonus (although, Margot's one was relatively big for an International signing), the hype (BA, MLB, Fangraphs mid-season lists), when you consider the positional adjusment, age adavancement and the total package value wise, IMO our guy is better!

I love Margot. I've had him as my #5 prospect in the system for a while and just bumped him up to #4. He has an incredibly well rounded set of tools. The defense is reported to be plus in centerfield as well, which puts a lot less pressure on the bat. His low strikeout rate and plus speed should lead to solid averages. I'd like to see him get his walk rate over 10%, but that is relatively minor considering he's flashed solid power potential that should play up thanks to his wheels.
With all of that said, you're analysis of Josh Bell as a comparison is extremely flawed. You completely ignore what he has done this year, even though this is the year he really broke out. You also weight his injury plagued year in A-ball the same as his second year, which doesn't really make sense. I just don't really think it is a necessary or apt comparison. They are very different players and different levels. No need to force the comp to stir things up.

I disagree. As a 20 years old Bell has a 10% walk rate, K's at 17.3% and posted a .173 IsoP while stealing 1 base in 3 attempts, I'll take Margot's number as 19 years old over that! My logic is simple: I'll take the prospect with a .760 OPS cieling guy with good base running skills if he plays plus defense in an important defensive position over the .840 OPs cieling guy who plays a less valuable defensive position and plays it bad and is bad base runner.
