Pawtucket leads series 2-0 Portland tied 1-1 Salem tied 1-1 Just to add on, PawSox & Sea Dogs are best-of-5. Tonight's Salem matchup is the deciding game. On another note, today's daily Baseball America Prospect Report arrived via email. Among pitchers, they cite Workman's outing vs NYY, but not the gems by Barnes or Haley. Among Boston hitters Mookie & Vazquez are noted, but not Cecchini's 4-for-4 outburst. In fact, there's nothing on any club's prospects from any levels other than MLB and rookie ball. Seems kind of pointless to even send out a "report" like that.

I found the "Cecchini and Barnes lead PawSox to 2-0 series lead" headline very satisfying this morning. Two very talented guys with pretty big error bars on their projections, still ... always good to see them do well.

I'll be at the PawSox game tonight in Syracuse. Excited to get a good look at Owens.

Rodriguez with a 1-2-3 first. Pretty much all FBs all 92. Something I didn't know, in lowering his ERA more than a run while with Portland, he ended up 10th.
My first look at Castillo, nice swing. 1-0 linedrive to CF.
Looks like a 0-0 game for a while. Between the two, 19 pitches / 15 strikes in the first.
2 Ks in the 2nd for Rodrigues. First on on a perfect located FB, lower outside corner against a lefty. Second, on a change, the batter was way out front. The second one he came back from 3-0 count. Tough angle to see movement but his FB seems to have gloveside run.
Although it ended in a called strikeout, very impressive AB for Blair. KDLC lead off with the only hit in the game. Stubby flyball between the CF and RF.
Dogs up 1-0, bases juiced deep fly to R/CF by Heiker. Nice job.
ERod started mixing in his curve in the third, looked good. K came on a changeup. Nine up, nine down. So far, Matz looks good but he's locating his FB too high.
Castillo is fast. Advanced to second on a hard hit GB to the pitcher. Was a hit and run but the speed was obvious. 1-0 after 3. He had walked but nothing was close.
ERod gave up a walk but got a DP, still minimum batters faced.
LOL, ERod almost gave up a hit, batter lost the bat and Miller started to field the bat. Recovered in time to get the runner at first. He's dialing it up now 95-97 but did mix in a lower velocity FB. Change came in at 87. STill keeping the ball low, Matz still throwing his FB high. 68/44 thru 5.
Heiker led off with a first pitch linedrive double that was hard hit but also somewhat misjudged. Two batters later Castillo with a double down the line in right, Miller followed with a single and then stole second (bad throw by the catcher) 3-0 Dogs after 5. KDLC ground out to end the inning.

Phils, thanks a ton for the updates. This is an exciting story brewing, and it sucks not being able to view it, but your descriptions and accounts are definitely bridging the gap. Much appreciated.

NP, enjoy doing it.
3-2 now, ERod gave up two doubles. Welch with a great reach into the stands for the second out. The second double was off the wall in RF then misplayed by Wilkerson allowing the runner to advance to third. That was followed by a wild pitch that Carson Blair probably should have stopped.
Owens getting hit in the second, probably time to shut him down. 4-0. Salem 0-0 in the second.
Pitching change after a Blair walk. Their reliever is a slider pitcher. Caveat on the wild pitch comment, it's difficult to evaluate catchers (or late break on pitches) because their camera view is from behind the ump and a little but not enough to the right. Still 3-2.

Really hope Castillo suprises us with his approach. It's more important that he's driving the ball though. Glad to see his line tonight.
ERod is pitching his way into the top 40 prospects I would assume.

The downside of KDLC, fielding. Down the line two out ground ball double scored a runner from first. I don't think he'll get an error but... 3-3 now, pitching change.
PawSox down 4-2 Salem down 2-0
Lost my Portland stream both Radio and TV with the pitching change. Can still get Pawtucket so I don't know what's up there, the box is still updating. Kurcz came in, threw a wild pitch then got out of it. Still 3-3.

Four walks for Kukuk in 2+ innings. He's a mystery wrapped in a conundrum dipped in enigma sauce. He's only 21, but his control issues are killing him.

PawSox down 4-3 after a Hassan RBI double. Salem down 4-0 now. Kukuk relieved after he walked the leadoff batter in the 3rd.
Portland scored 3 on a bunch of singles. Up 6-3 now top of the 8th.
My internet is getting slow, Saturday morning, internet cafe gamers likely cause.
Owens in a bases loaded jam, one out. Just struck out a batter on a changeup. Sac fly everyone moves up a base, 5-3 now. Got out of the inning on a strikeout, all swing and miss changeups.

2-3, 2B, BB not bad for Castillo We'll have to wait and see against major league pitching but it's easy to see why the scouts like him. Came out of the game in the 8th. He's built like a stubby Bo Jackson in his prime. Portland 6-3 final. Lead series 2-1. Corey Brown with a solo HR, PawSox down 5-4 bottom 6th. Salem down 5-0 top 7th. Syracuse scored 1, PawSox answered with 2. 6-6 top of the 7th. 3 more outs for Salem, down 5-0. PawSox scored 1 more on a Swihart single. Up 7-6 bottom 7th.

Pawtucket will be playing in the Governors' Cup finals for the third year in a row (won one, lost one). It will likely be a repeat matchup with Durham, which beat Pawtucket 3-1 last year. Durham leads Columbus 2-1 in the best-of-five series. Games 1 and 2 will be in Pawtucket on Tues and Wed.

A few thoughts having seen last night's PawSox game:
-Owens' fastball, unfortunately, wasn't at all impressive. He was sitting 88 on the stadium gun and touched 90 a half dozen times. I'm not positive how accurate the gun is at NBT Bank, but Hinojosa was sitting 91-93 and touching 94, and Ohlendorf was touching 95. And it wasn't just that the fastball wasn't that fast, but it seemed to get much too much of the plate and the Chiefs weren't fooled at all. He did have several hitters off balance with what I think was the change (was sitting third base side and didn't get a great sense of movement), and got a couple really ugly swings with the curve, most notably the one he struck Solano out with in the second. On the positive side, he did seem to remain poised on the mound even when things were going tough. His delivery also seems a bit smoother than last year when I saw him.
-As Matt Huegel posted yesterday, Marrero is as advertised defensively at short. His footwork is superb. At the plate was a different story - he would seem to get back on his heels on occasion and took some awkward looks. I like anyone with that hand-eye coordination to improve, but the glove is far, far ahead of the bat right now.
-Bryce Brentz was really impressive in a totally frustrating way. I love his swing - it's tight with a very slight uppercut. He drove all three of hits up the middle with authority. His double was a thing of beauty. Then, in his two strikeouts, he swung at curves out of the zone then went down looking.
-Heath Hembree doesn't finish his delivery consistently. He would often do this weird leg wiggle thing on his follow through. He also looked bigger than 6'4" 210.
-Corey Brown's homer looked like a can-of-corn fly ball off the bat. The wind was blowing out some, and I think I underestimated his ability just to muscle the ball out.
The Burriss steal of third was entirely on Owens - Swihart didn't even throw down.

Frustrating is Owens struggles since joining triple AAA. I know there is an adjustment period, but I was hoping he would continue to dominate like he did every level. He has been pretty bad since being called up save for like 1 or 2 starts.

Frustrating is Owens struggles since joining triple AAA. I know there is an adjustment period, but I was hoping he would continue to dominate like he did every level. He has been pretty bad since being called up save for like 1 or 2 starts. I'm just not sure he has really struggled as much as his ERA suggests. Prior to last night, Owens has a 28.2% K% in 6 AAA starts compared to 25.6% this year in AA. His BB% is also down from 9.5% in AA to 7.7% in AAA. His GB% is down slightly, from 46% to 40%. The biggest difference is his BABIP is up and his LOB% is down. Also, his HR/FB rate has doubled from 5% to 10%. I suspect he is tiring some and there is some adjusting going on, so the increased BABIP and HR/FB are likely to have a lot to do with Owens' performance and not just luck, but there is enough there for me to be optimistic he can bounce back.
