I think Iwakuma would be a great #2 guy to target and extend. His style of pitching doesn't make me worry about aging as much (doesn't rely on velocity or Ks), and we match up well with Seattle who could use Cespedes.
Cespedes + would likely get it done. I would hope for something like Britton being the "+" rather than a Marrero, but may pull the trigger either way. Iwakuma is consistent and would likely cost less than other pitchers of equal talent.

I'm also hoping for this swap, and wish the extra piece on our end is Brandon Workman. He's had his moments but to me is never going to be much more than a league average player.

I'd keep Workman for the pen. I think his stuff plays up in short stints. I'd guess that not many teams are going to value him much as a starter, so why bother trading him without value? Wouldn't be too surprised if he turns out like Tazawa.

Yeah I would rather give up Ranaudo than Workman. Ranaudo I don't think has the stuff to be a setup guy, and if he's going to ever make it as a a starter it needs to be I a park like Seattle's.

They could use Cespedes, but Cespedes plus a fringe SP prospect (the inclusion of the likes of Workman or Ranaudo isn't going to make a no-trade a trade) is not going to get it done. Cespedes fills a need, but losing Iwakuma just puts a huge hole in their rotation. Trading Iwakuma means the Mariners need to rely on all of Walker, Paxton, and Ramirez to be healthy and effective. That's a huge gamble.
I don't understand the incentive for Seattle to trade Iwakuma unless they get bowled over.

I thinki he's a solid target and it would be great if we could extend him as well. It's just going to cost more than Cespedes and Britton, or Cespedes and anyone not in our top 6 or probably. Seattle would like a power bat and they can't seem to sign them very easily on the FA market.

The incentive for Seattle is that they need offense and the free agent market is pretty barren Cespedes is not a great hitter, but he's still pretty clearly better than almost all of the options available on the free agent market this offseason, especially amongst outfielders, and he'll also be considerably cheaper and younger to boot. I could see the Ms talking themselves into it if they're confident in those young arms and (like many on this board) covet/overvalue power and "run production."
