Series Thread Disclaimer: The SoxProspects Moderators will be somewhat liberal in policing the Red Sox "Series" Threads. Some of the Ground Rules are applied loosely in here, as we understand that there is a tendency to want to react (or overreact) to every play of a Sox game with one line reactionary posts. Those posts are okay in the Red Sox Series threads to a point - we certainly appreciate the passion. Just try not to overdo it, and try to maintain some semblance of reason. In addition, please don't let those type of posts spill over to other more substantive threads, where they may be deleted. -The Management

Why are there 4-5 days off after the CS? That's crazy.

Why are there 4-5 days off after the CS? That's crazy. They have to schedule it assuming that the LCS series might go seven games. It's dumb, but logistically it's really hard to move stuff around after the fact.

It's strange that his peripherals and batted ball rates didn't change much at all, it was mainly the BABIP. I think this is where HitFX might be useful as I'd guess he hits the ball harder.

I don't really think having a set schedule for the World Series is that bad. Teams that clinch the LCS quickly have earned the extra rest, it's easier for the television networks, it makes finding the games easier for the casual fan. For the type of people (us) who really have such a passion for baseball that we post on a message board about it daily it kind of stinks having a gap with no games to be played. But the reasons for it are sensible and having an elastic schedule for the biggest event of the year would be a headache for a lot more people. I'm cool with it.

Objectively measuring the quality of the games this year so far ...
You can look at three measures of the quality of the game. The most obvious is average Leverage Index, or tenseness of the game, which FanGraphs conveniently calculates and posts. They also post the average Win Expectancy of the home team -- if you convert that to the average WE of the winning team and regard lower scores as better, you get the closeness of the game, except that big come-from-behind victories count for even more. Finally, you can total the absolute value of all the changes in WE, as a measure of total drama. (The dream way of doing that would be to calculate the apparent WE when a ball is in play, before a great catch is made or easy one botched, and then again at the end of the play. So this method excludes all the drama generated by defense.)
Last year all post-season games had an average LI of 1.00. This year, 1.20. Of the 14 games with the lowest LI, 12 were last year. (The exceptions this year were the NL WC game, and the Royals' clinching ALDS game against the Angels.)
Average WE of winning team last year was 0.70; this year, 0.62. 13 of the 15 worst (highest) games were last year (same two exceptions). Of the 7 games with .50 or below, 5 were this year.
Average WPA total last year was 2.52; this year, 3.21. Same thing happening, with only 2 of the 13 lowest totals this year, and 9 of the 13 highest.
Combining the three measures to get the best games of the last two years, 7 games really stand out:
1. The 2014 AL WC game (1.66, 0.37, 6.153). 2. The 18-inning Giants / Nats NLDS game 2 epic (1.64, 0.41, 5.932). 3. Last year's Tampa / Boston ALDS game 3, with Lobaton taking Koji deep (1.78, 0.46, 4.690) 4. Last year's NLCS Cardinals / Dodgers game 1, with Beltran's 13th inning walk-off single (1.73, 0.52, 5.251) 5. Royals / Angels ALDS game 1, with Moustakas' HR leading off the top of the 11th (1.62, 0.50, 3.888) 6. The instant classic Giants / Cardinals NLCS game 2, with Wong's walkoff HR (1.68, 0.61, 4.402) 7. The NLCS clincher (1.49, 0.45, 3.659).
And 4 of the next 5 games are from this year as well.
Since last year's LI was 1.00 on the nose, we can use those games as a standard ... 20 of them were above the median, 18 below. By that standard, 21 of the 25 games this year have been above average.
Of course, the flipside is that teams facing elimination are 0-6 this year, while last year they were 4-5.
Is it asking too much for the games to remain so close, but the Series to go 7?

Big Game James with a miserable first inning. He's pretty damn lucky the Giants only got three there.
Love Hunter Pence. Everything he does is just so awkward-looking, yet he's an effective all around player. 420 feet bomb to dead center off Shields in the first.

The Big Game James thing is pretty much mocking at this point. Whether the announcers are feeding us the material intentionally or unintentionally is my only question. It'd be like going around saying "here comes Big Game Byung-Hyun!"

I would pay some amount of money for a feed with just game sounds (and maybe graphics), no commentary, especially during the postseason. Not a ton of money, but maybe $50 a year or something. Just putting it out there, MLB/Fox.

It'd be like going around saying "here comes Big Game Byung-Hyun!" Maybe this is old news, but I learned today that he got the nickname because he grew up a big James Worthy fan, and that was Worthy's nickname. That doesn't make it much more tolerable to hear, but at least he wasn't appointed it because of his postseason performances.

He's broken two nickname rules though. 1. Don't steal another person's nickname. 2. You can't give yourself a nickname.
For example, my name is James too. If I stole James Worthy's nickname, I'd hope you'd all laugh at me. And I'm not the worst playoff pitcher of all time, either.

I'd love for James Shields to lose, but I don't want the Giants to tie the Red Sox with the 4th most WS rings.

Quick reminder teams passed on Buster Posey to draft Tim Beckham, Pedro Alvarez, Eric Hosmer and Brian Matusz. It's insanely remarkable how much of a crapshoot MLB drafts are.
I mean, Tim Beckham.

I meant to post this earlier but got distracted. Good move by Bochy taking Ishikawa out for Perez in the fourth inning. Didn't necessarily love Perez bunting there but whatever. The fact that he was able to identify that the marginal gain in defense was more important in that situation than the marginal loss in offense deserves credit. We tend to be pretty hard on managers in this space (they deserve it though) so I wanted to make it a point to mention one doing something right.

Anyone still think that Shields is worth pursuing as a free agent this offseason? Yes you can site SSS with his pitiful post-season stats, but he also has a lot of innings on that arm. I hope the Red Sox steer clear of him.

So what is the updated status on the James Shields trade? Is it back to being bad again?
The Royals have been a lot of fun over the last three weeks or so but it's frankly embarrassing to watch so many analysts give themselves whiplash in reversing their evaluations of this organization.
