Ace of MLB Stats ?@aceballstats 8m8 minutes ago Potential suitor for #Phillies Papelbon? Yeah, they kind of need to be pursuing a guy like Butler. They're also checking out Dioner Navarro -- a mix of those two, while nothing special, would be eons above what they have now. --- Roch Kubatko ?@masnroch 9m9 minutes ago OF Alex Hassan had hernia surgery in November. Said felt 100 percent after couple weeks. #orioles JJ Cooper ?@jjcoop36 1h1 hour ago Long way til April, but can't think of a team with a position in need of help more than D'backs at catcher. It should be noted that Butler is from Arizona, I'd imagine that would be one of his first picks. And on that note... Diamondbacks GM Dave Stewart says he won't add a catcherO'Brien has a boatload of power, but he's gotten on base at a mere .319 clip in his MiLB career, has just 308 PA's above high-A, is barely a catcher, and didn't crack the D-Backs Top 10 lists from BA, BP, or Fangraphs. Oh, Diamondbacks.

If you look at both BP and Fangraphs' write-ups, they rank O'Brien out of the top 10 b/c they don't think he can catch (McDaniel rates him 12th). Faleris for BP even says that if he were a catcher, he'd easily crack the top 10. BA hasn't gotten to the Diamondbacks yet (unless you got the Handbook?).
Now, you can certainly assail their belief that he's a catcher, which seems to go entirely against scouting consensus. One has to wonder if it's posturing.

Seems pretty obvious now that the organizational philosophy here is coming from ownership, as is usually the case.

I saw O'Briam catch a few games against the Sea Dogs, no way his future is anything but DH. He's not even mobile enough to ever be a first baseman. He's a giant stiff that's going to be a major base clogger. JJ Cooper ?@jjcoop36 5h5 hours ago Peter O'Brien has always faced significant questions about his work behind the plate. This year he allowed 14 PBs in 46 Gs. JJ Cooper ?@jjcoop36 5h5 hours ago O'Brien also threw out 10 of 64 baserunners (15.6 percent). Was better in PBs and CS in AFL, but also had 5 Es in 14 Gs. ADD: The writing was on the Yankee wall late in the season. When Gary Sanchez was benched for work ethic reasons, O'Brien was on that team. Rather than start O'Brien they moved Cervelli down from AAA and he caught almost every game. I think they were trying to hide how bad he actually was. Apparently the Diamondbacks didn't read that wall. Oops - I pulled up BA's 2014 list (the 2014 issuing of 2015 prospect lists by BP and FG tripped me up). And my BP subscription expired this weekend, which I've inexplicably yet to renew, so I couldn't read their write up on him. But, yeah. assail their belief I will. He's completely blocked at 1B, so he'll certainly play catcher, but everything I've heard about his defensive makeup sounds terrible. How poor can he afford to be behind the plate, even if his bat plays out close to league average level (Steamer forecasts a 95 wRC+)? A below average performance is nearly guaranteed, and it sounds like we're talking about something potentially much worse. A glance at the worst defensive catchers (regulars/semi-regulars) in the game the last few seasons yields a list of guys who are likely a hell of a lot better than O'Brien, and while he's only logged 147 games at the position, he's 6 months away from turning 25, scouts appear revolted, and his physical profile isn't encouraging. Posturing? You'd be inclined to say "duh," but considering the team in question, I'm more inclined to believe them.

It looks like old friend Brandon Jacobs signed with the Royals. I have to remind myself that he was traded to the White Sox for Matt Thornton, not in a Peavy deal. My favorite Brandon Jacobs moment: The year was 2011 and Greenville. The picture is MFY Slade Heathcott sucker punching Christian Vazquez while he was still in the squat. Brandon Jacobs shot out of the dugout a put one of the best baseball butt-whoopins I've ever seen on Heathcott. LOL, it took half the Yankees team to pull him off and by then, they were all the way to third base. Good stuff. Just watched this fight on YouTube. Thank you

Atlanta fleeced Houston in that Gattis trade. I can't see any reason why Houston should have wanted Gattis, unless they plan to use him as a DH, and even then, he has to be platooned. He can't play a position and he doesn't hit RHPs very well, and he doesn't get on base.

Gattis should be a LF/DH/1B for them. He's a better fit on an AL squad (which I admittedly keep forgetting the Astros are).
Ruiz was somewhat duplicative of Moran. Question is whether you think Folty is a starter or a bullpen arm. It's a power arm either way, for sure.
Honestly, that's not an awful lineup for a team that's going to give the likes of Springer and Singleton a chance to prove it. Rotation is brutal though.

Too lazy to check the Scouting Report, but just a POI.

If you believe the public consensus scouting reports (e.g., BA) on Foltynewicz, it's a bad trade for the Astros, but teams often value their own prospects differently than the public consensus. If they didn't think the command/control was going to improve, this might have been them trying to sell high on Foltynewicz.
The As acquiring two high-paid relievers in consecutive seasons is baffling. Clippard is a really good reliever (and will be even better in O.co, considering his IFFB proclivities), but he's only around one year and is paid a lot, while Escobar is an averagish shortstop on a cheap contract. I just don't get that one.

Clippard is pretty excellent while Johnson was not - he really just that trademarked "proven closer" tag. And Clippard's not really super expensive. He's an arb-3 guy without those pesky expensive saves- he's in line to make maybe $7.5M? Oakland can install him as the closer and possibly get a QO out of him, or deal him at the deadline if they don't end up contending.
Also, as mentioned above, getting Semien that playing time has value too.

Post by jmei on Jan 15, 2015 13:30:04 GMT -5
MLBTR projects Clippard for $9.3m in arb, which is not really any lower than the AAV he'd get as a free agent (though getting him on a one-year deal means his contract as a whole still has surplus value). He's way better than Johnson, but the As gave up a lot more. Oakland has Doolittle signed to a super-cheap contract, so they don't need a closer, and Clippard is very unlikely to be good enough to receive a QO next year. Getting Semien playing time is great, but they should have been able to get a better return for Escobar considering he's really the only starter-level SS on the market and a bunch of teams would like upgrades at the position (Mets, Padres, etc.) or at 2B (Blue Jays, White Sox, Angels, etc). The trade probably makes the As a better team, but I think they could have gotten more of a return for a very useful player in Escobar.
