Good to hear. Gotta keep the young talent rolling in, and it certainly sounds like this kid is legit.

I would guess that Red Sox ownership has told Romero to do whatever it takes to sign him.

I should have consulted with you before I formed an opinion. I'll PM you in the future before posting.

Brian MacPherson @brianmacp Red Sox int'l scouting director Eddie Romero has seen Yoan Moncada, declined to say much other than that team can be "aggressive" with $. Sounds like the Red Sox will be in and in heavy. Love to hear it. I really like the sound of that. I'd like to think that currently having prominent Cuban players on the major league team gives us a slight advantage over say the Yanks, even though Moncada would likely never play with Cespedes. That is probably just wishful thinking though hah. I love the "sound" of it too, but we know nothing ... well, I anyway know nothing. If another team (who??) feels the same way, we're starting at a signifigant disadvantage. Also, ff they want another team (who??) to pay more, I wouldn't expect them to tell us that. This is what they'd say. I'm a born-again pessimist. Don't get my hopes up. I hate falling from heights. Sigh.

He's gonna sign with the Yankees. It's inevitable.

Just a thought - if somehow Xander is traded the Sox will not be denied on Moncada.

Another thought - given that we're probably giving up two picks and maybe more, the signing of Moncada would offset that nicely.

Kiley McDaniel of Fangraphs suggests that Moncada is expected to receive a signing bonus in the $40m+ range, and other sources are around the same neighborhood. Including the 100% tax on overages above the IFA pool limits, that means Moncada's total up-front cost is expected to be $80m+. Note that unlike guys like Cespedes and Puig, this merely represents his signing bonus, and if/when he reaches the majors, he'll receive additional salary (the minimum for the first three years, then three years of arbitration) on top of that.
That's a crapload of cash, and it raises the question of whether or not he's worth it. With the signing of Sandoval and Hanley suggesting that the Red Sox are not afraid to spend over the luxury tax limit, any money that goes to Moncada would presumably represent money that directly comes out of the Red Sox major league budget. As such, an $80m bonus would basically represent somewhere between $40m-65m that the Red Sox lose out on in possible major league payroll (the luxury tax rate varies; it is set at a 17.5% rate for a first-time exceeder of the cap and increases to 30%, 40%, and 50% if the Red Sox exceed the cap in subsequent years). At those prices, you basically have to think Moncada is a top-20 prospect in all of baseball for him to be worth it, based on what I remember of the "how valuable is a top prospect"-type articles that I've read. And if the bidding goes much above $40m, you basically have to think he's one of the top 5 or 10 prospects in baseball, otherwise that money is probably better spent on major-league payroll.
The above is pretty back-of-the-envelope math, but I do want to push back against the idea that you sign Moncada at any price. If he requires a signing bonus that is effectively $100m+, he basically has to be the second coming of Byron Buxton for the deal to make sense. Even at $80m, it's a high-risk move, and you have to think he's a stud who projects to be at least a borderline All-Star. Maybe he is that guy and you're willing to go to those levels to sign him, but it's not the slam-dunk that many of you are suggesting that it is.
(Caveat: if you're one of those people who thinks the Red Sox should just spent all the cash, the above doesn't apply. But assuming the team does have a budget, at whatever level that budget is, there's the question of whether spending on Moncada versus spending on major-league-veterans is a better idea.)

Thats a nice breakdown jmeiI believe McDaniel has said that he would be in his top 10 possibly top 5 and Badler said he would the favorite to go 1-1 in the draft. It comes down to whether teams agree with that assessment.

Can we stop talking about Moncada? We need to focus on getting #1 & #2 starter pitchers, not Moncada. We do have enough players to back up 1B, SS, 3B & OF. It already over crowded positions. Why can't they focus on pitchers right now? Use the chips we already have in case they fail to sign Jon Lester. Betts and Owens are untouchable players in any deal.

No he's not a butcher, but he is a statue. How many plays did Xander make in 2014 where he went into the hole onto the OF grass and threw out a runner at 1B? Zero. Nada. None. Never. Soha. He is a mediocre athlete, and *that* has nothing to do with being 2 1.You watched every inning played by Xander has season?

Can we stop talking about Moncada? Did you really come to the Yoan Moncada thread and ask that we stop talking about Moncada? That's like going in to Five Guys and telling all the customers they should have a salad.

Oh, and for further irony, Xander was tied for 19th in DRS (-9) at SS - his Siamese twin? Hanley Ramirez Siamese Twin? Would you be satisfied if he hits like Hanley?

We have spent 200 million so far to fill seats. If we do a trade that drains our farm system then signing Moncada becomes more important. The more blue chip prospects we have the better. As far as a duplication of a position at SS for example with Moncada, he is years away from the majors. I doubt we will sign him, so I won't get excited over Moncada. After we sign a pitcher for big bucks, I think ownership will be done spending.

Really don't understand we're you're coming from. Signing Moncada has absolutely nothing to do with the Sox getting pitching. Does this mean the Sox can't snag a backup catcher either? I'm sure Ben Cherington is quite capable of walking and chewing gum at the same time. Why in the world wouldn't the Sox go after a supreme young talent that will need a couple of seasons of seasoning? Ortiz is gone in a couple of years most likely. Napoli is probably gone after 2015, not that he wouldn't necessarily want to come back. Injuries happen. Underperformance happens. Again, why shouldn't the Sox be interested in Moncada again?

And the $70 million or so spent on Moncada wouldn't be subject to the luxury tax computations either. We're talking two separate buckets of money.

And people need to stop acting like our owners can't afford to spend much more. We could spend $300 million a year and be fine. Not that we will, but the owners have plenty of cash and plenty of revenue to cover for signing players.
