Suprised by the cut of Hoyer. Carpenter doesn't suprise me that much as Ninkovich could easily get time at backup OLB if needed (with an abundance of DEs to take his spot).

While I remain concerned with the performance of the O-line, WatersWatch is getting a tad out of hand...

Tennant out; RB Lex Hilliard in.
Might be an indication of Vereen's availability (or lack thereof)

Kettani released from the practice squad and Jeremiah Warren added. Warren was in training camp until the last round of cuts.

Salas, Rivera and Hilliard cut. Branch expected to be re-signed and Kellen Winslow expected to be signed. Koutovides or Tarpinian should replace Rivera.

Greg Salas getting cut shocks me honestly... I am kind of bummed about it actually. In watching the highlights of the kid, he is a huge receiver in the same mold as Hernandez. He could break tackles and his YAC were great... I guess it's an IN BILL WE TRUST moment.

Fear not (at least for now). He made it to the Practice Squad

Fear not (at least for now). He made it to the Practice Squad I was actually coming here to post just that... it does make me feel a lot better actually. I think he really has talent and it will be good to have him spend time learning the system while building on timing with the QBs.

Wow. Just wow. This ending of the Packers and Seahawks game was an embarrassment to all 4 major sports leagues in america, there's no way any conscious person would rule that a TD on the act or even more absurdly upon further review. If the Packers miss the playoffs because of this game, the season should not count.
That was one of the worst things I've seen.

Once the dope called it a TD it was all over but the shouting for the real refs to come back.

I heard otherwise somewhere, but either way, how can someone standing RIGHT there can call it a TD? Tate is hugging the Packers CB for crying out loud.

Playing time changes I'd like to see starting this weekend (in order of likelihood):
1. Cunningham getting more time in the base package (Nikovich has underwhelmed in my opinion). - VERY POSSIBLE
2. Dowling getting more reps in the nickel (moving Arrington to the slot) over Moore. - SOMEWHAT POSSIBLE
3. Vereen getting healthy and taking reps over Woodhead - INSERT YOUR JOKE HERE.
Of course, the theme is getting more athleticism on the field on a regular basis.

Mark Sanchez just dropped 328 yards on the Pats. Get it together, Pats defensive backs.

The problem is it's not just the DBs. The defensive line can't get consistent pressure, especially the DTs (usually Love/Wilfork). Yes, they rack up a few sacks, but opposing QBs have usually had plenty of time to work slow-breaking deep routes and double moves. The linebackers universally struggle in pass coverage-- none is fast or quick enough to keep up with athletic TEs and RBs in man coverage, and they lack instincts and range in zone. And the defensive schemes implemented by the coaches has not been enough-- when your secondary is giving up chunk yardage anyways, it might be a good idea to dial up a few corner or zone blitzes rather than sitting in a two-deep shell for most of the game. Opposing offensive coordinators look at the inexperienced safeties sitting in cover 2 and know exactly which route combinations are going to shred it. And, as you mentioned, the secondary plays with bad technique and may just not be talented enough.
That said, if they win in London and get healthy over the bye week, they're still a threat to be the two seed in the AFC. And give Belichick two weeks to scheme against a team in the playoffs, and he'll figure out something.

Patriots acquire Aquib Talib from TB (no word on compensation). Per ESPN
I like it. He's a head-case (and he won't help us next week as he still has 1 game left on his suspension) but he's got shutdown corner potential.
EDIT: Tweets indicate he'll be re-instated on Monday but I'm not sure that still works given his 4th game is no longer happening (with NE on a bye this week). Hopefully some clarfication soon.
EDIT 2: Pats give up 2013 4th rounder

I love it. I think this trade plus the cashing in of the perennially traded back first rounders makes it seem like Belichick knows he has to make the most of the time left with Brady.

I think it's that the defensive backfield was suspect as hell, and then Dowling went on IR making it even weaker. Maybe you're partially right about the ticking clock theory influencing things a bit (that was certainly what I thought with using both first round picks), but I also think it's an indictment of the defensive backfield in both talent and health. As constituted, either Marquice Cole or Nate Ebner was going to be on the field in sub packages... yikes.

Tampa Bay was going to cut him anyways. A 4th round deal is a little rich for me but if he plays well in New England it will be all forgotten. Remember when Belichick used to pile up late-round picks?

It'll be interesting to see how the active roster looks (from a DB perspective) once that Indy game rolls around. Health will certainly play a role but there is a greater chance that we'll get some guys back healthy by then.
Typically, 8 DBs play some roll on game day. We have the 4 base guys; a nickel back; a dime (or "big nickel") guy and 2 that are depth and play exclusively on ST.
If everyone is healthy, Talib/McCourty/Chung are locks for most packages. The 4th spot likely comes down to Gregory (S), Arrington (CB) and Dennard (CB). As of right now, Dennard is the hot guy (though he's helped by injuries to the other two) so if he's your 4th then that means your rotation looks like this:
Talib CB, Dennard CB, Chung S, McCourty S
That leaves Arrington as your nickel. The big question is whether you can have Gregory active. He's not really a big nickel or dime guy (the way the Pats lineup) like Wilson is and he doesn't really play ST. So does that mean he sits?
Wilson is perfectly suited for the big nickel/dime package and could take over Ebner's minutes on ST (he's been struggling as the punt protector so maybe Nate sits).
I suppose you could have Gregory as, technically, your nickel back with McCourty rolling over back to the CB position.
Cole is an ST leader and has been decent backing up the CB position.
So what does everyone think? Who sits between Gregory and Arrington (or Dennard if Arrington gets his spot back)?
Is Ebner a lock for inactivity now?
We have a week before a game and another before this becomes an issue. Chime in.

I don't think Chung is a lock at safety. Chung is good in the box but really struggled as the deep part of the zone (basically any time they play cover-2 or cover-4/quarters), especially versus play-action or double moves. Gregory is less talented athletically but is more disciplined in reading his keys and not being out of position.
