Hi collective red sox brain. I recently moved to Seattle from New England, and for only the second time in my life I live outside of the NESN coverage area. Can anyone give recommendations for the best and/or cheapest ways to gain Red Sox coverage from afar. Is it MLB Network/MLBTV.com or bust? Any insight and pricing would be much appreciated!

Yep, mlb.tv is the best. It's $129 I believe. You'll have Seattle games blacked out, but should get them on local cable.

FYI, MLB Network is the TV channel and MLB.tv is the online service, so they're two different things. And yeah, if you're doing this legally, you probably need to get the latter. Former isn't necessary.

Let me mention that MLB.tv now works with Google's Chromecast, also. The Chromecast device - all of $39.95 - fits into a USB port, available on just about every digital TV. It taps your wireless seamlessly once you get it set up. Once that's done, you can then use a desktop or laptop application, or a smart phone app, to control the wireless feed of games to your TV. That smartphone app is just MLB's At Bat. You can use it to search out the game you want. Ask to have that game fed to Chromecast and, presto, major league baseball in HD on your television - without cable or satellite. This is where TV is going. Netflix was one of the pioneers, with House of Cards winning the first ever non-network Emmy. I'm preparing to ditch my satellite provider and move on to broadband TV. It will cut my bill in half and I'll have baseball available on demand. I have no idea how MLB will be able to restrict you to out-of-market games with that service, but I'm sure they'll try. They can always use your IP to get somewhat of a bead on your location, but that address can be spoofed by those in the know. Anyway, it's another option. Here are the details. I'd like to drive home how insane the out-of-market stuff is, and MLB has made that easy to do. Here's the map that shows the layout for each of the teams. Take a look at the Mariner's home-court advantage where their games are subject to "local" blackouts. It stretches all the way to Eastern Montana, 1000 miles away! Between you and that "home-town" is a large chunk of the Plains, the Northern Rocky Mountains, the entire Columbia River Basin, and the Cascade Mountains. These guys abuse the hell out of everyday language for fun and profit:

Wow. Great graph. Thanks. It shows how crazy MLB is. I get the Sox on my Direct TV. I like getting NESN for the after hours stuff, not just the games. I live in VA, so they're blacked out on Baltimore games. However, Baltimore's color guy is Jim Palmer. He gives you a view from a pitcher's prospective. That's a nice change of pace from Remy. And he doesn't act like a homer. So, it's all good.

I get Baltimore/Washington games blacked out here in Durham, NC. I get mad every single time the Red Sox play them. It is insane to think that somehow, people in Durham are going to demand Time Warner to carry the Baltimore regional sports network on cable, when it's about a 5 hour drive. I have no option but to "cheat". And I realize that's not even nearly as ridiculous as other areas. I think Hawaii has like all the California teams and Seattle blacked out.
I don't feel one bit guilty for cheating. I don't even have the option to pay extra to watch what I've paid for.
