3/8 - 3/14 Red Sox Spring Training Gameday Thread

Love the flexibility on this team. The FO seems to have that as part of its strategic planning. Moncada can play three infield positions, and there are rumors of Swihart working out at third and first.
I don't think they'll ever replace Ortiz when he retires, they won't have to. They'll just rotate guys in and slot someone else into his position on the field for a game or two.

Boston Red Sox ? redsox 3/12 at PIT: Victorino RF, Pedroia 2B, Ortiz DH, Ramirez LF, Sandoval 3B, Napoli 1B, Bogaerts SS, Bradley Jr. CF, Swihart C, Buchholz RHP. Somewhat surprising that Hanigan isn't getting the start. Maybe they want to use him for Owens start. LHP Eduardo Rodriguez, RHP Heath Hembree, RHP Alexi Ogando, LHP Robbie Ross Jr., RHP Keith Couch will also pitch. Rodriguez is perfect so far this spring 12 up 12 down including the college game.

Hopefully, they will start to realize that other than player ego, changing positions really shouldn't be a big deal in baseball. Obviously, there's some things that are different and a player needs some reps to be proficient, but it's not so hard and it shouldn't be that hard to practice it enough throughout the year to stay on top of it. For instance Mookie, should work on turning the DP from second once or twice a week for a few minutes. A player like Cecchini should be in left or right field during most BPs to track balks, etc.

Interesting tidbit: Pete Abraham ?@peteabe 2m2 minutes ago Greetings from McKechnie Field, the oldest spring training park. Red Sox were here 1928-28. Boston Braves, too.

He was 90-92, didn't miss any bats. It's still early, though. I have no independent proof of this, but I would think that when rehab injury guys return to their previous selfs, they do it very quickly or they don't do it at all. Ogando came out of the box throwing 95. I guess it's possible over the next three weeks for Boggs to get back to the 95 MPH sinker he once had, but I am not sure there is a lot of precedent for doing that. Maybe they can get him to extend his opt out and go to extended spring if he's not ready.

Am I reading too much into the fact that Edwin Escobar, who went three-up, three-down with Ellsbury, Gardner, Beltran, only threw one inning yesterday? Probably, right? I know Wright did too, but that Escobar threw the fifth, unlike Wright who entered in the ninth, is intriguing to me.
Also, Luke Montz has yet to catch an inning in a game - he's only either played 1B or DH. Don't know if it's related to rehab from his injury last year, or if the Sox don't really see him as a catcher. Would explain why they bothered going out to get both Quintero and Martinez - he's either not a catcher or there may be questions about his ability to do so.

There was a tweet earlier where Farrell said Quintero would be the most likely early season call up if there was an injury.

Quintero is mentioned as short term depth. Add: Montz did catch bullpens early in ST.

Depends if you are drawing a conclusion but other than that you aren't. I mean where does he fit in AAA as a starter? It'd be dumb for them to go with 6 starters and I'm not sure if makes much sense to start Rodriguez in AA... He dominated there last year and looks too strong in the early going. Wright Barnes Johnson Owens Are all locks then the last spot is between: Rodriguez Escobar Workman Escobar and Workman both only have one option left and are not likely starters so I think putting them in the pen easily makes the most sense. The Sox want the other five in the big league rotation over them no question so why wait to convert? I think them getting comfortable in the bullpen role is important.

Has anyone found an RSS feed for Speier's new 108 Stiches newsletter? I'd like to follow it but would prefer to do so through my RSS rather than via email.

Ortiz and Sandoval both go deep in the same inning. Hopefully a sign of things to come

Breaking News!!! I love Eduardo Rodriguez. Is there any doubt he will be in Pawtucket's 5-man rotation? Another solid, and yes dominant, performance from our Christmas present from Baltimore.

Chris Martin in to pitch. At least Morosi was pretty diplomatic when he said no way betts or Swihart were going anyplace. And less diplomatic: Jon Morosi ?@jonmorosi If I am the Red Sox, I wouldn't trade Mookie Betts for Cole Hamels straight up. That's how much I believe in him.
If only there was some baseball forum that was in agreement on this months ago.

The YES announcers yesterday, after Mookie hit a single, had an exchange that went something like, "1: And they've refused to give him up in a deal for Hamels. 2: Can you blame 'em? 1: Pfft, not at all." They sounded a little wistful.
Meanwhile, I *know* spring training records mean absolutely nothing, but it still feels better to see them win a bunch of games in a row rather than lose a bunch of games in a row.

I just gave in and signed up for the email. I signed up for Britton's too, even though its in the ProJo RSS, because the Projo makes you click through, so I find the email more convenient.

Clicked the "not spam" tag and it's gone to my regular inbox since. I'd estimate that happens half the time with newsletters and the like.

Oops! May have originally posted this on the wrong thread. Apologies. At the risk of a double dip......
Saw the Sox play today on a whim at beautiful old McKecknie Field in Bradenton.
Quick hits:
Papi looks in damned good shape and hit a typical tower job over the 400 foot sign in dead center against a pretty strong cross breeze.
Panda looks better physically in person and was pretty damned agile at third fielding a high chopper by going airborne and landing like a cat. He also came in on a tapper and displayed a quick release and strong arm nabbing the runners in both cases. He hit a HR matching Papi's trajectory but over the 375' sign in right center. Both were no-doubters.
Hanley is not 240 lbs. He looks jacked top and bottom but not really heavy. He raked a bullet down the LF line that was somehow caught on a stagger. The fielder must have been playing Hanley strongly to pull. As Hanley was going back to the dugout he stopped, stared out at the left-fielder and jokingly motioned him to play more straight away so he could have gotten a hit. He does have something of a swagger and did not run balls out to first. Ok, yup it is spring and we don't want him to pull a hammy.
JBJ made a nice running catch coming in from center, raked a line drive hit over second base and hit a high drive to the warning track in dead center that probably would have been out had the wind not been blowing as strongly.
Napoli has a new body. Wow. What a difference....much leaner but not skinny. He looks 5 years younger.
The stadium had a clock that displayed a countdown of time between innings but none other.
There was no radar gun reading that I could see but Buch enjoyed good results following the first three batters who hit sharp liners.
Rodriguez punched out 4 in his 2 2/3 innings on what seemed a variety of offerings.
Swihart displayed a strong arm to second on a stolen base but the throw was high as he had to hustle to retrieve a boxed ball. He probably would have had the runner despite that had the throw been accurate.
The temp was 84 at game time, the sausages and onions primo and the ambience unbeatable. The fan loyalties seemed about 70% pro-Sox.

Unfortunately the ones around Fenway suck now. No one cooks the peppers and onions enough and no one uses red peppers anymore like they used to 20 years ago. It's been disappointing for decades.

You poor, poor, people. That's what happens when you're 2,000 miles from the Mexican border. You take Fenway's advice, and the quicker the better. There are enclaves...
