Unfortunately the ones around Fenway suck now. No one cooks the peppers and onions enough and no one uses red peppers anymore like they used to 20 years ago. It's been disappointing for decades. You poor, poor, people. That's what happens when you're 2,000 miles from the Mexican border. You take Fenway's advice, and the quicker the better. There are enclaves... Didn't know there were so many aficionados with respect to sausage with peppers and onions on this board. Good to know.

What a catch by Mookie. Is there anything he can't do?

There is no other spring training broadcast with as much non-baseball content as NESN, even considering Will Ferrell day. Best thing about the start of the regular season will be getting to choose from 2 broadcasts for most games.

I know that I am a bit drunk already, but could someone kindly confirm that MLB.tv is mixing 2nd and 3rd Inning at bats? I mean, I don't feel that drunk.

Hanigan is one hell of a framer. He's already stolen Hinojosa three strikes this inning (two of them for strikeouts).

Still, Hinojosa mostly did a good job working the edges of the strike zone to give Hanigan those framing opportunities. I would not be massively surprised if he got a couple of cups of coffee later this year.

Yeah, I like Hinojosa a lot and think he could be a pretty good reliever. Needs to work on his command, but he's got a pretty live fastball.

Someone needs to tell ZiPS that Zeke Spruill is not going to start 19 games this season.

Pickoff attempt 2-3. Now I know who's playing catcher, no thanks to NESN. Was that a trap by Brock Holt or did they rule the runner safe because he dropped it on the transfer?

Are they practicing the hit and run or did Vazquez really just try to steal a base?

Brian Johnson's pitches were all over the place, including one bounced in front of the plate, but Vazquez' throw to 2nd an absolute bullseye.

The fell-out-of-Nava's-glove-when-he-hit-the-wall-three-run-triple changed the complexion of the game. We'd be all over that play if this was real life.

I know that I am a bit drunk already, but could someone kindly confirm that MLB.tv is mixing 2nd and 3rd Inning at bats? I mean, I don't feel that drunk. I didn't tune in until the 6th or 7th inning but I experienced the same thing and I wasn't even drunk yet. It was like the movie Groundhog Day. Then I had to keep watching the same non-baseball crap in the booth over and over, in addition to jumping back and forth between innings. In addition to these problems, the mlb.tv experience is very non-intuitive. With the premium version you're supposed to be able to substitute an audio broadcast for the tv broadcast's audio. I can't figure out how to do that. I would much prefer to listen to listen to Castiglione & O'Brien/Bradford than the incredibly boring Orsillo. (Bring back Sean McDonough!)

I was watching the game in mute and listening to Joe C. If I remember correctly, I just went to the MLB main page and clicked on the TV icon then clicked on the radio icon then went to gameday. I think Tim Wakefield and some lady were doing most of the TV game.
I'll do it again later, I'll let you know if I did anything different.
I'm pretty sure whoever is the media coordinator for the Red Sox is on vacation this month. It's an annual tradition.

Wakefield, Orsillo and their guests were very, very boring. I know they have to promote the Red Sox Foundation, but we all have our favorite charities and there are so many ads touting others. But personal discussions rather than focusing on the prospects made the telecast unpleasant. Wish I had thought about Castiglione/O'Brien radio broadcast.

The take home from the NESN broadcast is that baseball is not good enough to stand on its own, that the largely mindless chatter in the booth is the real action. I know it's only pre-season, but that's a really arrogant and unprofessional message to send out.
As an exercise, someone should put a stopwatch on the broadcasts, just to figure out what proportion of time the cameras are focused on the field versus in the booth, something that would blow a few minds I'll bet.

The sad reality is that the baseball can't stand on its own from a pure entertainment perspective for the vast majority of people. Most "fans" typically watch the games while doing something else or flipping channels. Most fans are not like the posters here. They don't care about the location of a pitch or the sequence of pitches until it hurts the team.

This is a sad admission, but with my nearly 13 hour workdays including commute, other than playoffs baseball has become too slow and the mental constructs of the players- their stats and potentials is what has now preoccupied me much more than actually watching, other than occasional fast forwards- excepting playoffs and key games. In terms of actual action, if anyone saw that recent Bruins overtime, hockey is about 50 times better.

There is one exception- scouting the sequences and stuff of a young pitcher

For some reason, this was even more annoying to me for a spring training game. I mean, who's watching this? This is a good time to go *more* hard-core baseball, not less. If you're going to have guests, bring in some Sox scouts to give them a moment of limelight as reward for their hard work and get some in-depth discussion of some of the players. Hmmm, that's actually a pretty good idea. Anyway, the point is to hook the hard-core audience in further for the season. Although, in the three innings I could stand, Wakefield did have one good story. They were talking about how pitchers get annoyed when pitching coaches come out, and he said that one former Sox pitcher was pitching an away game in Cincinnati. He gave up back-to-back home runs - with the fireworks going off each time from a barge in the river - and his pitching coach came out. The pitcher turned to the pitching coach and angrily said that he didn't want to hear anything. The pitching coach replied, "Oh, I'm not out here for you. I'm just giving them a chance to reload those cannons." So, about 30 seconds of quality ...
