@peteabe: Shane Victorino on DL. #RedSox recall RHP Matt Barnes to supplement bullpen. Concerned with overuse of relievers, Tazawa in particular.

How about bringing up some starting pitching as well? I think that might do more to ease the current pressure on the bullpen.

"concerned with overuse, particular Tazawa" should probably read "concerned that they can't trust any relievers not named Tazawa" ...

I think we know that we are lacking in the rotation. That isn't a question in my mind and a main reason experts have predicted a trade for an ace. The staff as currently out together handicaps the playoff chances of the team.

We need a strikeout pitcher when we pull our starter in the middle of an inning with runners on. Breslow has pitched well this year. He's just not capable of doing that. Matt can stay for a long time if he performs well. Good luck kid. Always nice to get another New England kid on the sox. Even though he was a Yankee fan..

Why don't you tell us which of the current starters you want to get rid of so badly? The funny thing is that the two of them doing worst statistically are the ones with the most consistent track records - Wade Miley has a 5.20 SIERA and Rick Porcello has a 3.69 SIERA. The rest are have done even better than that. There is basically no valid case for pulling the plug on any of them at this point.

Most baseball experts, not opinion writers, did not predict the Red Sox to win the AL East given the current SP. they recognize that There are huge questions and a lack of quality pitchers who can last through a season. And I think that Johnson and Rodriguez would be upgrades over Miley and Masterson.

Kurkjian, Olney and Stark: none picked the Red Sox to win the division and nor did they pick the Sox for any of the 2 wild-card spots. Then they didn't look at stats and projections. They went for page views and clicks. They don't run baseball teams. Why do I give a damn?

Those guys look at stats, but more importantly, I think they understand baseball in a much greater way than most people on air and writing. All of them felt like the pitching put the Red Sox into 3rd place at best in the AL East. You claim ALL experts picked the Sox and I gave you 3 immediately that I knew didn't. I hope Boston scores 7 runs a game....they will need to in order to compete.

Look, you can repeat what Nick Cafardo says after every loss. But there are way bigger questions on every other AL East team.

Thank God. Here's hoping the kid pitches lights out and forces his way onto the major league club permanently. They need a big arm in the bullpen. Let someone else get DFA'd when Victorino returns. It's your time Matt....Let's get it done.

Why the hell do we care what ESPN thinks of the Red Sox? Go to Fangraphs and B-Ref like baseball fans. Being the GM of the Red Sox does not include trying to make ESPN writers more excited. They all picked them to win in 2011. This has nothing to do with Barnes or Victorino so let's can it.

And none of them picked them to win in 2013 why aren't you telling posters who aren't moderators to not tell other posters to "can it"? It's terribly poor form to allow that.

Some people think they know more. I am a friend with a member of 2004 WS team, was aware of Damon signing with the Evil Empire prior to the news breaking, and am a lifelong Sox fan (Jim Rice was childhood favorite). You can pull numbers and project, but one thing hasn't changed, you need pitching. I am not for giving away the farm for an elite arm, but would like us to give a couple of the young arms opportunities. I like the potential of Johnson and Rodriguez right now and there are scouts in the organization that do as well. We will see.

I think Barnes has more potential as a potential closer or Wade Davis type of setup who can fill in as closer without missing a beat. Good to see him come in and do well. Potential win!

Hopefully Koji starts looking better. I think the Sox need to improve on defense as well. A strikeout pitcher like Barnes will help.
