“@jmastrodonato: Source: Allen Craig to be optioned. Cannot refuse assignment as player with four years of service time. Good move to get him everyday ABs.”

Hopefully he understands this is best for his career at this time and goes down there and gets his timing down. Otherwise he is heading for early retirement. Amazing how a hitter of his caliber just loses it. Best for him and best for the club. Certainly is value as a trade chip is at an all-time low!

His contracts states what his pay scale is while in MiLB. If he misses 78 days or more while in AAA (which is end of July), he will have less than 5 years service time next year opening day and could be optioned again. If necessary.
service time 4.077 season end-2014

Craig isn't a bad defensive 1B. If he could hit, he might have a ML job.

Let's recall that the only Cardinals player who put fear into anyone's heart in the 2013 World Series was one Allen Craig. If not for him, that's a sweep.
The Red Sox have Napoli, Victorino and maybe Ortiz gone next year and they could use a healthy Allen Craig. He needs to take this year as a mulligan, get his swing back in AAA, and hopefully be ready to help the Red Sox next year.

Craig will bring nothing of value in a trade and probably has a material chance (25 to 30 percent, maybe?) of climbing back to respectability as a ML player. Since he has an option left, it makes sense to have him try to figure it out in AAA.

It seemed like a swell idea to get him and see if he could be a useful player again, but 162 plate appearances and a .430 OPS later and I think we can say he's finished. Four consecutive years with a worse OPS than the previous year—I'd be really impressed if he could make it five.
DFA Victorino, bring up Castillo, send Masterson to pen, trade for Jeff Samardzija.

The cards are very good at identifying declining talent.

Beltran got hurt in game 1 as you remember and wasn't the same guy for the rest of the series.

I keep hearing he was suppose to have surgery on the foot but never did. What's the deal , maybe that would help. It would be ashame to give him to another team, he isn't costing us that much but he isn't doing anything. You know something is wrong.

I'm making the call that this doesn't happen whatsoever and that he never hits again. The Red Sox will have to eat the entire contract. Can we please stop relying on reclamation projects? I hope he's claimed on waivers and the Red Sox don't recall him.

OK sorry, optional assignment waivers, which there is a gentleman's agreement that nobody will ever be claimed from. Different than waivers he'd need to pass through after being DFA.
