This was pointed out on OTM here. Dayan Diaz might be someone to watch in Portland even though he's 26. 15.2 IP 7H 2R 2ER 2BB 17K He had TJS in 2009 which is why he might be way behind. But maybe he's someone to watch?

But maybe he's someone to watch? Meh. Tommy John six years ago wouldn't explain his sudden success. It is interesting that he has suddenly cut his walk rate so drastically. That said, the .189 BABIP suggests a healthy dose of luck on the hits, especially given his FB tendencies. As for any he's "behind," that's largely due to spending 3 years in the VSL, plus last year, the Sox basically backed him up two levels from the progression he was on.

Fly ball pitchers typically run slightly lower BABIPs than ground ball pitchers. That said, a .189 BABIP is obviously probably highly luck-driven in that small of a sample.

It was the 2/17 BB/K that was most interesting to me. Something may have clicked with his command/control.
The BABIP stuff doesn't mean that much because his SIERA (2.08) and FIP (1.41) are still super low instead of the insanely low ERA (1.15).

So is Pawtucket just gonna be a start by committee today?

So is Pawtucket just gonna be a start by committee today? That veritable minor league institution, the bullpen game. Jess Todd gets first crack.

Awesome. First MiLB game will be played by the bullpen.

Hmm no Craig or Castillo in the Paw Sox line up tonight Craig was in the original lineup and was scratched because he's not in Pawtucket yet. Even still, not sure what you're thinking that would mean?

Pretty tired of Rusney being babied down there. Let him play in the outfield everyday down there and let's see him up in the majors. They gave him 72 million for a reason

This isn't just the shoulder injury, but the preceding oblique and thumb injuries.

Tonight's was the rarely-seen beast: the full bullpen duel. Bullpen game for Indy as well. Though Jess Todd went ahead and spoiled things by pitching really well.

Javier Guerra with a HR, now sporting a 295/344/511 line as a 19 year-old SS with plus defense. Which is good!
He went into the game with a 31.2 K% rate. Which is not so good.

He's always run pretty high strikeout rates, and with how hard he swings, that'll probably continue. Certainly not a deal-breaker though, especially with his power-- a ceiling of Ian Desmond with better defense (or J.J. Hardy with more Ks) is pretty tantalizing.

I mean, I'm not looking for Dustin Pedroia here, but maybe bringing it down to 20-21% would be nice. Mind you, I'm not concerned yet (still small sample as a young SS in his first year of full season ball), just something to keep an eye on, a note of caution behind his extremely good production so far.

A 30% k-rate leaves almost no room to be an acceptable MLB hitter, especially if you're not walking much or slugging .500. When Guerra's BABIP drops to a normal level, he'll be really close to a .300 OBP. The k-rate has to come down for there to be any excitement about his bat.

Yeah, but I don't think he's a true-talent 30% strikeout guy. Even with more-predictive stats like K%, you still have to regress when you're dealing with small samples.

McAvoy with a nice start in the K-BB's department, where he had been struggling a bit:
6.0 IP, 7 hits, 2 ER, 0 BB, 6 K.
Most promising is his otherwordly 3.6 groundball/flyball ratio for the season. If he can keep his command under control, that's something that will play up in the majors as well.
