I'm pretty patient and realize the randomness inherent in baseball. However, it is incredibly frustrating to watch this team struggle to hit AAA pitchers (Which Pelfrey and Nolasco amount to at this point). My own take, but the offensive environment has changed so drastically with the broadened strike zone, that they're offering up at a lot more and walking much less. That's bound to create a bigger opportunity for pitchers. As I've written before, I believe this was a conscious strategy on the part of MLB to given the offense a much lower profile in the wake of the steroid era. Like I said, just my take. It's just not the same, and not just for the Sox either.

Xander is acting like a shortstop these days.

When you watch this team it becomes apparent just how badly Cherrington has screwed up this team. He gave a huge contract to a lazy injury prone SS to be his LF even though everyone knew he was injury prone. He has rushed players to the majors that he shouldn't have and given up on promising players like Josh Reddick, and Rubby DeLaRosa. I believe the Sox will finnish in last again. Will Cherrington finally be held responsible?

Based on the box score, this was a fun game to not see.
Is it a flaw or a feature of baseball that a team can seemingly suck this hard and be three games from being in first place? I mean, they could hit three fluke doubles over the next week and be in first place.

It was really encouraging to see Pelfrey spin a gem out there. Also, gotta love Perkins locking down a 4 out save.
This is a twins fan forum right?

Man, this team just finds ways to lose. I guess as soon as Buchholz put the Sox in a 2-0 hole in the 1st inning, the game was over. Too bad. He pitched pretty well. It seems the starters either get pounded or the offense simply don't score runs. Either way, this is a very boring Red Sox team to follow.
So the winning percentage, which I guess is too basic to be an important stat, took a hit today. As soon as they got to within a game of .500 and played two of the best games they've played all year, they've gone back to what they have done most of the year, lose with starting pitching one night, and lose with the inability to score runs the next night.
I kind of feel bad for Hanley Ramirez. He hasn't seemed to be right since that collision with the short wall at Fenway. I have to think it has affected his hitting big-time. Guy can't win. If he doesn't play, he's an injury prone malingerer, but here he is playing, and he's been awful offensively since coming back and his defense has been consistently but understandably terrible all season long.
The guy has a rep for bad attitude, but nothing he has done has been due to a bad attitude. Quite the opposite I think. I hope he gets healthy soon.

I can't believe how ensconced certain people are in their opinion of Kelly. It is such a failsafe position. Get to argue that things are not as they seem and hope one day that it turns out so that they get to say I told you so. I am reminded of Greg Norman...when larry mize holed out at Augusta..and Norman says to his caddy, "well another unlucky bounce against me" or something like that and his caddy said to him (varaiation) - " I don't know about all that, I just want to caddy for someone with some guts" Cy Young my ***!! Right, because it doesn't take guts to lead the world rankings on seven different occasions. What have you lead the world in? Hey, I didn't say it...his caddy did. I also don't feel bad being with the 99.999999999999999999999% of the people in the world at any given time who don't lead the world in anything.

Seriously though, how can an entire lineup underachieve? That doesn't seem possible.

Seriously though, how can an entire lineup underachieve? That doesn't seem possible. That would seem to suggest that the Red Sox offensive problems are not random, but stem from a common problem -- although I haven't the slightest idea what it might be. The best hypothesis I could come up with is that a sudden shift to a larger strike zone would disproportionately affect a team built on plate discipline and strike zone recognition, at least until the team had time to adjust. However I have no idea whether it's actually the case; I certainly don't have evidence.

Wouldn't mind seeing a little more consistency with the line ups, I thought yesterday's was a joke and the results showed that.

Wouldn't mind seeing a little more consistency with the line ups, I thought yesterday's was a joke and the results showed that. 7 hits in a 9 inning sample proves nothing. We haven't scored much in the last couple of games, but did over the weekend. Also hard to blame them for Monday's offensive performance, how many teams score a lot when they go down 7-0 in the 2nd inning. We have the most spoiled fan base it's insane.

Seriously though, how can an entire lineup underachieve? That doesn't seem possible. That's an easy one. Farrell's fapult. Does Farrell swing the bats? Does he watch strike one and two go by each at bat? Does he yell at the umps for blowing a strike call (at first not, after the player is tossed) How can people blame Farrell for the offense not swinging the bats? Sure he writes the lineup each day...but he's working with what he has...(he has written some poor lineups in the past) It's not his fault that they can't hit with RISP. Come on. Even if the brass thought about firing him...who would replace him? What if that person doesn't do well? Do you call for their job too/blame them? Pick your battles...it's not (all) Farrell's fault.

Oh look, another game, another game of pathetic offense. Make a damn trade Ben. What offensive player would you like him to replace, and with whom? He wants John Henry to replace Cherington, Farrell and all 25 roster players like reasonable Red Sox fans want.
