Battle for top 10 (protected) draft picks in 2016 draft
|
Post by amfox1 on Jun 13, 2015 16:42:34 GMT -5
The general consensus now (12 months before the draft) is that there are eight premium prospects (in alphabetical order):
Nick Banks, RF, Texas A&M Austin Bergner, RHP, Windemere Prep HS (FL) (UNC commitment) Jason Groome, RHP, IMG Academy (FL) (Vanderbilt commitment) Alec Hansen, RHP, Oklahoma Riley Pint, RHP, St. Thomas Aquinas HS (KS) (LSU commitment) A.J. Puk, LHP, Florida Blake Rutherford, CF, Chaminade Prep HS (CA) (UCLA commitment) Robert Tyler, RHP, Georgia
Obviously, this will change. Lots of pitchers, not a lot of hitters (especially HS hitters).
Other names to be aware of: Ryan Boldt (2013 draftee, Nebraska), Jordan Sheffield (2013 draftee, Vandy, injured), Matt Thaiss (2013 draftee, UVA)

Well see, don't sign Benintendi this year and get two of the top 8 in 2016. (/s/)

If MIA wins (and they are leading early), BOS will find itself in the #4 spot, due to the tiebreaker. Still in the #4 spot, tied with MIA. 98 games to go.

I'm going to look on the bright side of this disastrous season. There are a lot of examples in other sports where decent teams inexplicably or because of injuries got high picks they probably shouldn't have. Parlayed it into premier talent.
San Antonio - D. Robinson turned em around. He gets hurt for a year and they suck. Might have returned sooner. Win lottery vs CELTICS and get Tim Duncan.
Pittsburgh Penguins - Were turning the corner. Made playoffs in 89 with Mario Lemieux. Miss by a point in 90 and because of dumb NHL slotting system end up with Jaromir Jagr.
It shouldn't have taken teams like; Pittsburgh, Baltimore and Washington so long to turn it around in baseball. And, because it did. They got premium packs while they were already stockpiling talent.
I just hope we can get a power pitcher at the top of next year's draft.

Benintendi looked awesome yesterday. I think he may have meant in the off chance we don't sign him we have the 8th pick in a deep class.

The Sox will sign Benintendi. He did look really great on 3 plays!! His catch in center was excellent. His jump and acceleration on his steal looked legit. And wow did he turn on that inside pitch beautifully. His tools were on full display. Looking forward to watching him this afternoon.

Oakland is somehow 28-39 with a +24 run differential. That is really incredible.

Oakland is somehow 28-39 with a +24 run differential. That is really incredible. They have 15 wins by 5+ runs and only 6 losses by 5+ runs. In games decided by 4 or less runs, they are 13-33.

Oakland is leading SD 5-1 in the 6th. If they hang on, they vault over the Red Sox, who then become the worst team in the American League and would occupy the 3rd position in the 2016 draft. This is what the Sox should be playing for, the 3rd pick, since there's nothing else to play for.

If the season ended right now, BOS would have the worst record in the AL and the 3rd pick in the 2016 MLB draft:
1. PHI ---- (9-game losing streak) 2. MIL -2.0 (5-game losing streak) 3. BOS -6.0 4. OAK -6.5 (4-game winning streak) 5. COL -7.0 6. MIA -7.0 7. CHW -7.5 (6-game losing streak) 8. SEA -8.5 9. CIN -9.0 10. SDO -9.5 (4-game losing streak) 11. CLE -9.5
(tiebreaker order of the above teams is ARI, COL, BOS, CHW, PHI, CIN, MIA, SDO, MIL, TOR, CLE, SEA, OAK, BAL)

Even if there is some reason for them to have a disadvantage in close games (and I don't think that there is), that kind of luck isn't going to last. I think that team will end up at .500 by the end of the year, even if they end up selling off a few useful parts in July.

I think the Sox might pull that off this year, but I don't think they're going to lose 100 games like the 1965 edition did.

Catching the Phillies will be tough, though. That team might lose 110.
