Why is Masterson starting at all? He should be relieving?
Can't wait to see him giving up 6 runs a game in the majors soon.....

Masterson gave up a run in the first inning on no hits and three walks.

Masterson with a poor start: 1 hit, 3 bb, 1 k, and 1 earned run in the 1st inning.

Actually, the 3rd walk was in the 2nd. He had 2 walks, a steal, and passed ball in the 1st for the run.
in the 2nd (so far) - walk, single, wild pitch, K, wild pitch.
Masterson is still struggling. Something just isn't right with him. I'd be curious about velo, too.
EDIT: Now a double scores the 3rd run for Luoisville, with 1 out in the 2nd.

No way he will be back in the rotation after that. Wonder if something medical is going on. Hate to see this happen to such a good guy.

Brian MacPherson ?@brianmacp 9m9 minutes ago Word from those with their own radar guns is that Justin Masterson was around 87-88 for most of his outing.

Devers with his 3rd home run this season, as the Drive take a 4-0 lead. No Moncada today.

“@brianmacp: Justin Masterson: ”Physically, I felt good, but mechanically, not so much — rushing, drifting, everything was going out.“”

Shaw with his 5th home run. PawSox still trail 5-1.
Shaw is tied with Brentz and Chavis for the organizational home run lead (minors only).

Guerra and Dubon both add HR's, 15 total runs on the day for Greenville.

7th game (of 50) with the Drive scoring 10+ runs. Drive lead the SAL in scoring, although they are only 3rd in home runs.

The Drive average 14.5 runs per game when Devers homers. #meaninglessmath

For all the deserved raves Devers has gotten, Guerra is just a year older, has been exactly as good at the plate (19 points more of SA versus 11 points less of OBP), and of course has hugely more defensive value. I was a skeptic coming in, but going from an .022 BB rate stateside through April (.024 last year, .016 this April) to .121 in May has made a believer out of me. The odds against that happening at random given his overall stateside BB rate are 7,251 to 1.

I have been stuck in Kansas City all year, and have not been to one of our minor league games in all that time. I suppose Guerra's high BB rate in DSL is just the wild pitching. Perhaps his low BB rate in GCL is just that pitchers weren't afraid to throw strikes to a skinny SS, but now he is a respected hitter? It would be really interesting to know what specifically the staff has told to work on for developmental purposes. Given that Guerra showed MLB-level defensive, with plus bat speed, perhaps someone could tell him that batting for average + OBP is enough, he does not need to flash power. I would speculate that if he was not trying to hit for XBH so much (.210 IsoP), his BA would be higher, and the SO lower? I am inclined to believe that little guys trying to hit for power leads to injuries (Coyle?) In any case, a 19 year old is going to want to test himself, so we may as well just watch.

A few comments that admittedly don't hit everything you mentioned, but just a few: 1) Yes, ignore walk numbers in the DSL. The pitching is generally terrible. 2) Guerra is not small. He's 5-11. Coyle, by comparison, is listed at 5-8 and might be shorter. I also don't think his injuries have had to do with swinging hard. He just gets hurt a lot. 3) I think assuming that Guerra is just selling out for power is mistaken. Certainly didn't look that way to me. He's a teenager in full-season ball - sometimes they strike out a lot. I think it's just development. I didn't get the sense any time I've seen him that he was swinging out of his shoes or anything (think Keury De La Cruz, who falls over when swinging relatively often).

thanks, appreciate the eyes-on assessment, did he look 165lb, or was that when he was 17? I do hope he understands a grade 5/WAR 2 SS that people don't get too excited about still goes for $10M/yr on the free agent market. Not to get off topic, but people don't seem to get excited about a pitching prospect projected to be 4/5 starter. That's also 10M/yr in FA. If a position player looks like he could be the 4/5th best bat on the team, we'd be excited, but not so for the 4/5th best pitcher?
