There's been talk (most recently reported by Nick Cafardo) that the Red Sox and Arizona are both pretty interested in acquiring Asdrubal Cabrera. Many have also speculated that Boston may want to go for Shin Soo Choo as well.
I just dont see Choo as a fit:
1) He's going to get a big contract
2) He is a one year guy who we'd be giving up prospects for
3) He's best off as a platoon OF
4) He's on the wrong side of 30 and were a team in rebuild-ish mode.
I'd like Cabrera though. He's average at SS and above average offensively. He'd be helped by playing more games in the AL East parks too. Cleveland, KC, and Detroit all have pitchers' parks. It's just his price that scares me.
There's no payroll to eat either as part of a deal. Perez or Ubaldo are the only ones i could think of but i think they still have positive trade value so they wouldnt help our cause.

With more and more reports saying Xander should be able to handle SS I just don't see us moving significant prospects for Cabrera. I guess if the front office isn't sold on some guys or if A package could be made without our top guys. Xander (of course), JBJ, Webster, Barnes or even Rubby. One good thing is he is signed for two seasons and teams will need SSs again next year.

I've always thought of him as an above average defender. Am I wrong?
He is still young and a tough out. Not sure what they'd be looking for, but agree......forget the top 5.
Iglesias and Brentz? Sort of like to see what "Julio" Iglesias is capable of, but I may think that is a fair swap. Cabrera is a fine player. I have no idea why the Indians would want to trade him anyway.

He's above average defensively, yes. This year only a tiny bit, but he has had some impressive years.
Maybe Brentz + Iggy + Workman is enough, but i doubt it.

Where do you guys get the idea that he's above average defensively? He wasn't even an average 2nd baseman defensively - he reacts slowly to the ball being hit and does not have the speed to compensate; this gives him very poor range as SS.
I want no part in this guy unless we are moving him to another position. We have seen how much better the Yankees 'should' have been over the past decade if they had someone other than a statue playing SS, I don't want to see that in the Red Sox future.
Over the past 3 seasons (since he has been 100% shortstop) he has a -28.5 UZR, all due to his lack of range. This makes him the worst SS in baseball over this time period, even worse than Jeter (among 16 qualifiers)
His DPR and ERR are solid (like Jeter again).

I want no part in this guy unless we are moving him to another position. Got to agree with you on this. Just doesn't appear to get to a lot of balls. Whoever we get for the SS position is basically keeping the spot warm for Boegarts, who I think will be in Pawtucket by June. I have no problem with giving Iggy another year in the minors to learn to quit chasing anything thrown in his general direction.

no matter what, the sox gotta hang on to their top prospects, especially xander. in addition they gotta hang on to barnes, bradley, webster, rubby, brentz, cecchini and maybe britton or workman.

He seemed to come out of nowhere and had a great year in 2011 & came back to earth last year. He just turned 27 and one would think should have some decent years coming up but for some reason he just doesn't excite me so I wouldn't be willing to give up much more then some kind of combination from extra RPs, a Catcher or someone like Nava or Sweeney maybe Sands for him. I certainly wouldn't do Brentz or Workman. So...Mark Melancon & Sands?

I made this thread because it's a rumored topic, but I'm not in favor of trading for Cabrera. If we were on the verge of contention, then sure, i would trade for a shortstop like Cabrera (who is likely heading into his prime). Given the current state of this team however, I would rather just keep our prospects instead of trading multiple prospects away.
