Fungible option in case Swihart's sprained foot is going to require a DL stint. With Hanigan starting a rehab assignment tomorrow, Kratz won't be with the team for more than a couple weeks.

They might also just think that Kratz is better than Sandy Leon. It's hard to evaluate backup catchers due to sample size issues (Kratz has all of 537 career plate appearances), but Kratz has a strong defensive reputation (including framing) and probably has more offensive upside than Leon (Kratz has always put up strong power numbers).

I think he's probably better than Leon too. Once Hanigan is back, maybe we roll with him and Kratz.

Didn't Quintero have an opt out with the Sox? Hard to imagine him not being upset and using it if he didn't with him stuck at Pawtucket and them bringing in someone else no better for this short term fix.

If he wants to opt out, be our guest. Plenty of Quinteros out there to replace him.

I guess Luke Montz was not an option.

Great point. Hadn't even thought of that. I guess I was operating under the assumption that Swihart was going to stay up when Hanigan came back too, which isn't necessarily certain.

I guess Luke Montz was not an option. Montz isn't a catcher anymore. He hasn't caught since last year.
