Unless I have a car accident on the way to the ballpark or get ebola, I will be at the GCL game. Looking forward to my first look at Anderson Espinoza.

There's the paperwork, quizzing by the police, dealing with insurance issues, maybe even going to the hospital, etc. But why Ebola? If you catch it now you can watch the game and be back home long before you get intolerably ill. Hey, we've gotta have our scouting reports here. Suck it up, buddy.

Nick Hamilton getting his first start with the GCL Sox, batting 9th and DHing. And he gets a base hit in his first professional AB. Nice. Just as Jagger did yesterday.

My guess is hes done having pitched 4 innings today which is what the sox have capped all his starts at but incredibly impressive line: 4 IP, 3h, 1BB and 5K's!!! All 5 strikeouts were of the swinging variety and he had a 6-0 GB-FB ratio...and he finished the outing strong by striking out the final two batters. Keep in mind hes the youngest pitcher in the GCL!

There seems to be some talent on that GCL team.
And in the maybe interesting fact department, Rei is only 1 1/2 years younger than Swihart.

Kevin Steen says don't forget about me. Well, he was just Kevin Steen You know what I mean And the way he pitched was way beyond compare So how could I scout another (Whoo) When I saw him throwing there Well he threw a pea, and I, I could see That before too long I'd fall in love with Steen I couldn't scout another (Whoo) When I saw him throwing there

Well Anderson Espinoza did not disappoint folks. He is very poised and slightly bigger than I thought he was. I think you'll be able to see from the pictures he may be somewhat heavier than the 160 (170?) they had him down for. I guess MacDonalds (or the Waffle House) is working wonders. According to an Arizona Diamondback scout he hit a high of 97 in the 2nd and 3rd, but was primarily between 94 and 96 with his 4-seamer. He threw his curve and change-up with a lot of confidence. His curve was about 78 to 79. The change was around 84. There was only one ball that was struck well off him and it was a solid single to right by a right handed hitter who just went with the pitch. His mechanics, to me, look free and easy and easily repeated. He looks damn confident and has reasons to feel that way. Physically he, I hate saying this, looked like Pedro. I believe he can easily put on another solid 10 pounds. He seemed to be pretty athletic when getting over to first a couple of times and fielding his position once. Enjoy the photos. I can be too optimistic at times, but he looks like the real deal to me.

Sorry about that stupid umbrella. Sarasota/Ed Smith complex has these two umbrellas up for the poor players manning the "gun" so they don't burn and there is NO COVER at all for the fans. There was a BIG crowd of about 50 people today. Much more than usual. 4 years ago you could walk down both foul lines and get different perspectives and photos....now we are in a corral without any way of moving. I understand why I like "free range" chicken better now!
I did want to also tell you all how much I was impressed with Nick Hamilton. He looked quite good at the plate each time. He took the count to 3 balls, etc. each time and hit a solid single. Strong build. Another 17 year old kid!!

Arizona Scout? So we're moving him for Paul Goldschmidt? Stewart needs to throw another piece if he wants to have him. Kidding aside, thanks for the report Steve.

Yeah I was surprised myself that the Diamondbacks had a scout at this game. I run into scouts all the time, but not one from Arizona. Although I did talk with a Giants scout last year at a GCL game in Sarasota. This guy was very nice and helpful and told me he is covering the Orioles for 5 days before his next assignment which was in the mid-west. I understand after the draft he sort of handles an organization in increments like this. He was certainly impressed with Espinoza!

Not saying that Steve or anyone in particular would read too far into this, but just in case anyone would - this would just be part of normal coverage for a club. The complexes certainly don't get scouted like the higher affiliates do, but there are still guys there. Orgs may just differ in how hard they scout at that level, where the process is really more building a base of knowledge on a player for later on rather than identifying guys to acquire. (Although guys do get traded from the complex, as we've seen with guys like Gabe Speier, Luis Ortega, Eddie Lora and others.)
