In honor of Anderson the DSL will also be pitching an Espinoza today. Junior outpitched "Senior" when they both pitched last Tuesday. Wonder who comes out ahead today?

According to the MILB transactions on BA, Celestino was traded for cash.

Any chance of him cracking Lowell or Gville this year if he dominates again today?

I'm developing a problematic addiction to boxscore-watching on days he starts. Best part of my week. Even better is that Victor Garcia is also going today. Great tandem of arms there. I've gotta think that both get bumped up a level if they have two more starts pitching as well as they have. If Espinoza's sporting a 0.00 ERA and sub-200 BAA after 25 innings or thereabouts and six starts, what more is he getting by staying in the GCL?

With the exception of Lowell and the GCL Sox, all Sox teams have negative run differentials. The Sox system is not very well equipped with good pitching or power hitting.

I wonder if that has anything to do with using so many more prospects than overage org guys. I'm not concerned with the results of teams. That's not the goal.

How'd our boy pitch today? I was at the game (as was SteveofBradenton) and got several peeks at the pitching chart. Espinoza topped at 100 mph with others at 98. It appeared that he operated with the FB 93-97. Unless the gun was brought in by his agent, earlier velocity reports are likely accurate. His curve was about 72 with not a lot of break. One of the two hits off him was a ringing double to left on very much a hanger. Jagger Rusconi played second displaying quickness and a strong arm. A switch hitter I only saw him bat left-handed. He hit the ball sharply several times. "Jag" has been playing ball since he was five and has been on traveling teams that played as far away as Arizona in the summers. His proud parents, living in the L.A. area, are here for several weeks to follow him. Girlfriend, Haley, is a gymnast and competitive cheerleader and was also present to lend support. Apparently John Valentin was also at the game for a couple of innings to watch his son although neither Steve nor I had a chance to talk with him.

A missed opportunity to get details on his signing bonus? You're fired. In all seriousness, great report. Not AE's best outing, but not a bad one. You've seen lots of GCL games, is he too much for the GCL? Ready to get tested in Lowell in a few weeks?

I'll add to this that the Red Sox have been more aggressive in general with prospects than I've ever seen them before. I feel like in previous years, guys like Light and Aro would've been left to dominate Double-A for awhile, Dubon and Margot wouldn't have been promoted yet, etc.

Yomar is the son of the former Chicago SS, not the former Boston SS/3B.

I've got Salem ( www.baseball-reference.com/minors/team.cgi?id=a9af10c1 ) and Greenville ( www.baseball-reference.com/minors/team.cgi?id=627a55fd ) in the positive differential, per B-Ref. EDIT: By "this", I mean the run differential, not what James said.

I got to the game in the second inning and I may be wrong, but I thought Steve said John Valentin. If so, we were both wrong. Thanks for the correction.

Yes John Valentin was at the game and was taking some video of his son. He still is in good shape and probably could play left field better than some other ex-shortstop we all know (Hanley is looking somewhat better) even now. Young Valentin is indeed 5'6" and very fast. Hopefully he will grow into John's size. As Ken (Sarasoxer) said above Espinoza threw well, but he threw his secondary stuff a lot more than the last time I reported. It seemed like they were wanting him to focus more on that aspect. He got a little tense in one of the innings and started walking some guys. He actually had the bases loaded at one point. Most of his contact was very weak, but both the double and single were well struck. The "hanger" Sarasoxer mentioned was just that, but the single up the middle to the right hand side was off his fastball. Having some difficult situations like these has to help him down the road. Jaggar's mom, dad, and girl friend were real nice and weathered the Florida humidity quite well. Haley is going to go to the University of Oregon. I mentioned I loved the way they play football and that they have the best looking cheerleaders in the land.

As to the question if he is ready to be promoted, he needs time to work on his secondary stuff and mix it effectively with his beautiful fastball.

He did have three walks altho he was not "wild". One thing that did impress me was the ease of the heat. He was not grunting it up there. Jagger's dad was sitting nearby and guessed that Espinoza was in the low 90s. So when I checked the chart and reported, we were both surprised.

I doubt the average age of the teams are weighted by how often the players play. A lot of of the guys towards the top in PAs are the younger ones.

My bad. I looked at the standings page on this site and somehow my brain didn't register that the stats for Salem and Greenville were for the second half. Ouch! However, on the hitters, I also looked at the hitting stats of every team, and there just aren't very many players showing much power. More than halfway through the season, Guerra, at 11 HRs, is the leader, with 8 for Chavis and Brentz. There are only seven players with more than 100 ABs with OPS above .800: Jackie Bradley at Pawtucket; Sam Travis and Marco Hernandez at Portland; Guerra at Greenville; and Barriento, Cedrola and Berroa at DSL. There are 21 between .700 and .800, quite a few of them bunched closer to .700. Devers is at .763, Margot at .745 and Moncado at .742 (but rising rapidly).
