Kevin Steen has been looking real good. Finally gave up an earned run today (1) in 4 innings (4 K and 0 BB). Not seen him but he is making us sit up and take notice isn't he. Anyone have an idea on his stuff? Turns 19 next week.

Looks like Trevor Kelley was promoted to Lowell, as well.

Looks like Trevor Kelley was promoted to Lowell, as well. As a college senior playing in the ACC and one the NCAA leaders in appearances, you'd think Lowell would be more appropriate.

Why is Steen in the GCL? As a kid from high school that was drafted last year, wasn't he supposed to be at Lowell or Greenville?

Devers with a HR for Greenville. Gotta love that team this year. Looking forward to game reports from the SP scouts.

Why is Steen in the GCL? As a kid from high school that was drafted last year, wasn't he supposed to be at Lowell or Greenville? He played part of the GCL season last year at age 17. He is on the younger side as he won't turn 19 for another 6 days and he was pretty raw coming out of high school. He would have likely struggled against players that were 3-4 years older than him in the NYPL. Now that he has pitched very well in the GCL it wouldn't shock me to see him possibly get a cup of coffee in the NYPL at the end of the year.

Of course Owens pitches a gem, but gives a double in the 7th, so Matt Barnes comes in and immediately lets the run score.
Barnes is turning out to be a large bust.

Barnes is turning out to be a large bust. Very upsetting to me. I played with him briefly, and against him a couple of times growing up. His minor league career got off to a blazing start, but he has really struggled to miss bats for a bit now. Hoping for a turnaround at some point.

Feeling more and more strongly that Owens is one of the 5 best starting pitchers in the system right now... Really hoping he gets his shot at some point this year

I think Owens should definitely get his chance to show himself in the majors this year. His development in AAA seems to be finishing.

Lots of hard contact off of Steen during his 4innings, 1-2 outs each inning were VERY loud liners, or long fly balls hit very hard. He wasn't fooling any one this day with his 86-88mph FB and 81-82mph slider, with a couple of 75-77mph change ups sprinkled in.
Pimental came on in the 5th and sat 92-4, with his 1st slider (84mph) getting lined to RF for a base hit. Mechanics of Pimental looked good overall, but looked as though he doesn't really have anything other than a decent FB at this point. I took some up close pics of Pimental at various points of delivery, will upload when we return on Tuesday.
The interesting player of this game in many ways was Valentin. He showed range on defense, yet is trying to get ahead of himself on routine plays. He did this 2x in this game. Examples:
1)Dropped a low liner in the 5th inning. Got ahead of himself by trying to get a possible double play where runners were breaking from both 1st and 2nd. Still got a force out at 2nd, but was a possible double play, or??
2)Valentin makes a decent, rangey play t his right, then drops transfer from glove to hand rushing to make a play on a runner going from 2nd to 3rd (non force out) simply dropped the ball. He had plenty of time to make the play, just got in a hurry.
Valentin plusses in game:
Showed VERY nice speed with a hustle IF single on a dribble IF single off end of his bat in the 7th to drive in the Sox 7th run, barely beating the throw.
Pulled an 89mph FB down RF line for a stand up triple.
Kyri Washington looks like a very inteligent player also, was impressed with his base running instincts. Nice heads up advance to 3b on a wild ball that barely escaped the catcher past the dirt. Sidenot here.. Got a good pic of Kyri will upload Tuesday..
Comedy sides: Looks like Rolandi Baldwin is the guy they jest with.. My Spanish isn't great, just passable, though was picking up some absolutely hillarious things they were hollaring at him the entire game, even when he made nice plays at 3b.. One of them, in English after he made a SWEET play on a liner about head high was to "check his shorts Monday". While was in the disabled area, next to the Sox dugout, it was difficult to see which guys were doing it all, but was a lot.
I chatted some with Dave Tomlin between each inning, Kotchman was not there this game, chatted with Rasconi, who seems like a really nice young man and several others.
Will head off to Port Charlotte on Monday for Round 2 and Anderson Espinoza is going there according to Dave tomlin.
Regards, johnsilver
