I wonder if the Mets would be interested in trading Johan Santana. Obviously it wouldn't be anything more than a salary dump, but the Red Sox have money to blow, and a one year commitment to a pitcher would be perfect for them right now.
Admittedly, his skill set isn't one you would expect to play well in the AL East, and especially Fenway, at this point, but a one year commitment to a pitcher with upside (and one they can get for essentially nothing but money) is what the Red Sox should be looking for at this point I think (with the stream of pitchers set to come up in the next couple years they'll need rotation space to play them, and a multi-year commitment to a pitcher makes that space hard to find).
The Mets also are rumored to be considering shopping Dickey (if they aren't already), who is another pitcher with a one year commitment, although he would cost actual talent to acquire as he wouldn't be a salary dump. But without a long track record of success, and the nature of knuckleballers, he's a significant risk for regression and his Cy Young year makes his likely price relatively high.
All that being said (and don't laugh too hard at this) I wonder if the Mets would package the two together in a trade? Probably not since Dickey has pretty decent value right now and Santana's contract would mean they couldn't get a ton for those two together, but I wonder if a Lackey for Santana and Dickey trade could make sense? The money would be relatively close (the Mets would actually save like $5M), but the Mets would be able to spread the money out over two years (three depending on the whole option thing with Lackey) and Lackey could actually see a pretty decent resurgence in the NL and that park, and the Red Sox could fill out their rotation with a couple guys who have some upside and are only under contract through this season leaving them room for RDLR/Webster/Barnes next year.
Okay, I guess you can laugh now...
ADD: MLBTR just reported that the Mets are shopping dickey and would be looking for catching and outfield help in a trade. Catching is definitely a position the Red Sox could trade from, and while they don't have a bunch of major league ready outfielders, they do have quite a few of them in the minors they could trade.
