Jacoby Ellsbury has been a great player and a fan favorite since he was called up in 2007. He had an MVP caliber season in 2011. Yet, injuries have continued to slow him down from fully producing. As a Scott Boras client, Ellsbury will likely be looking for a huge contract after the 2013 season when he becomes a free agent. It seems that the Sox will be unable to re-sign him with his injury risk and cost.
To begin with, I love Ellsbury and I think that his injuries are just unfortunate. I would like that the Red Sox sign him again, as long as the years and money are reasonable, depending on how he does in 2013. Since him re-signing is very unlikely, here I have proposed a trade idea:
Jacoby Ellsbury, Jose Iglesias, (Can't hit) and Andrew Bailey (I would love to dump Bailey. He has been declining since his rookie season) to the Washington Nationals for:
SS Ian Desmond- Under the radar for two years, Desmond exploded in 2012 hitting .292 with 25 homers and 21 stolen bases. This is just the kind of shortstop the Sox have been looking for.
1B/OF Tyler Moore- Yes, he strikes out alot, but as a pinch hitter/ 4th outfielder this year, he hit 10 homers in just 156 at-bats. Given 450, he could hit 30. He hits right-handed and would be very suitable for the monster.
OF Eury Perez- Perez tore through AA and AAA this past year and was a September call-up. He can run, hit, and play good defense. He is major league ready and could be center field option should Jacoby be dealt. Also, he does not strike out much, so that should translate to good contact in the majors.
2B Jeff Kobernus- Kobernus has already successfully played in AA and is about a year away from the bigs. He is a good hitter, and does not strike out much, which means good contact in the majors. Where he would play is a question, with Pedroia locked in a 2B. He probably would just be infield depth or a trade piece.
RHP Nathan Karns- He is old to be at just high-A. But he could be a valuable undervalued trade piece that could potentially translate to a 4/5 quality starter for the Sox.
Unfortunetley, this trade is very unlikely to happen with the Nationals acquiring Denard Span from the Twins. So I put a poll above to ask if this trade would be reasonable.
Please reply for your thoughts.
