Ugh Easley. Not sure of the extent but losing him would suck (especially with Chris Jones on PUP).

This is certainly not the first time that we are hearing about this sort of thing. As joshv02 pointed out earlier, rumors of the Patriots' shenanigans had been floating around since pre-Spygate, and numerous current and former players and coaches have publicly accused the Patriots of pulling this kind of stuff through the years. The article also discusses the various efforts that other teams have gone through to report the Patriots to the NFL, try to catch them in the act, or enact prophylactic measures. But it's tough to get concrete evidence of the sorts of things the Patriots are accused of doing, and much of it may not even violate league rules (for instance, I honestly don't know if the NFL has a rule against stealing play sheets or jamming radio signals). Again, I don't think any of this stuff is unique to the Patriots or had a significant effect on wins and losses, and I agree that much of the outrage is overblown. But I absolutely think it's critical to understanding why the NFL came down so hard on the Patriots during Deflategate. The league has a whole has a widespread belief that the Patriots cheat and push the boundaries on ethical conduct, and while a lot of that is exaggerated, it seems to have some basis in truth. jmei I applaud you for taking, what for me, is a more reasoned and more principled view not the "total blind fan" who damns anything that smudges us, justifies everything that was done, minimizes any benefit obtained, looks the other way on the fundamental principle or even champions resourcefulness in finding ways around the rules of fair play. Often I hear we are picked on because of jealousy, or pick your reason/excuse. I understand the emotions involved when negative comments against 'our' vicariously enjoyed successes are ingested. I feel those too. A thousand times I have defended Papi from the 2003 banned substances list. It stings..it takes away, we feel less. Our teams' successes make us feel better inside by association, the sun shines brighter, the psychological chest puffs, the stride is sprightly. We are the city of champions! Any besmirch does the opposite. The result? 'Those negative guys are bastards and a-holes. Why can't people leave us alone to enjoy "our" success'. jmei I admire your strength of principle in the face of this so common, so natural, so human and so understandable reaction. This is pure drivel. This board has always been one of the most intelligent and rational ones around when it comes to the Sox...let alone the Pats, which I think is a distant second for most on here. So for you to call the people on here "total blind fans" because they disagree with you...not only is that disrespectful, but it's ignorant as well. Martenson's report about the football was 100% false, so maybe you're the simple one for taking their word as gospel? Just a thought.

Four te sets and twice scoring out if the same te grouping with motion by 6'7 giants (and different routes run). Just beautiful.
Jmei: "At Gillette Stadium, the scrambling and jamming of the opponents' coach-to-quarterback radio line -- "small s---" that many teams do, according to a former Pats assistant coach -- occurred so often that one team asked a league official to sit in the coaches' box during the game and wait for it to happen. Sure enough, on a key third down, the headset went out."
I may have missed it. Where in this in depth reporting does it point out that communications systems are controlled by the nfl? Do you think the patriots somehow struck again last night tweet the nfl is covering for them? If you are convinced by such drivel, you are right- one of us won't be convinced by rationality.

1. Does anyone actually think the Patriots cheated by messing with the headsets in the first quarter of the first game of the season last night?
2. If the answer is no (which it should be), doesn't that just prove how frivolous these accusations are? Look at the quotes from Tomlin - should we write a 10,000 word story on how opposing coaches feel cheated by the Patriots?

If it was intentional, it feels like a setup. Does it seem reasonable that they'd pull a stunt like that at the very beginning of the first game of the season with all football fans watching after all of the cheating accusations?

I think we said "bye-bye" to reason a long time ago.

The NFL provides the physical headsets, but the home team is responsible for installation and maintenance of the headsets (and the underlying infrastructure). This is probably the best read on the subject I've seen so far. I don't know if the Patriots intentionally caused the headsets to malfunction last night. I'm skeptical that they would be so arrogant as to do so, but Belichick did continue filming from the sidelines despite receiving multiple memos reminding teams that such filming is illegal, and the team did come out of the tunnel last night to "all we do is win win win no matter what." I also know that a former Patriots assistant coach went on record as saying that the team has done so in the past and that they've previously been publicly accused of doing so a half-dozen times. Based on what I know so far, I probably lean towards calling it a poorly-timed accident, but you have to see why most folks are skeptical of that explanation, right?

I can see why they're skeptical, but I can't see why they're treating the Patriots like they're waving confederate flags and denying gay marriage licenses. The vitriol is far worse than Red Sox and Yankees fans have ever had for each other. Guess that's how the world is now. Sad.

The ending of this article totally cracks me up: The Patriots were pulling out all their dirty tricks for the much coveted preseason win!!! We are truly at the height of Patriots related hysteria. Take a deep breath everyone.

Wait, did you just site the music they played coming out of the tunnel as evidence that they may have tampered with headsets? My goodness... I understand why casual fans are skeptical. They've been fed hyped-up, over-dramatized stories about the Patriots cheating. Most people of other teams don't read through these 10,000 word narratives in detail. The headlines out there say they cheat, and that is what they have to work with.

Good win for the Pats.
Agree with mgoetze, the trick play by Pitt was a big mistake. They were moving right down the field with simple plays.
Pats will miss the big Fork making the straight up the middle run a no go.

Meanwhile, sounds like #Patriots dodged a bullet with DL Dominique Easley. He has a hip pointer, may just miss a week or two, I’m told.

No, It doesn't make any sense. The guy convicted of multiple crimes doesn't rob someone on prime time TV. You are good at looking at both sides. But you seem to be bending over backwards and twisting into a pretzel over the Pats.

Of course, 5 years from now, Don van Natta Jr. will write a piece telling us that Goodell phoned all these guys and told them to say something to exonerate the Patriots whether it was true or not.

Several former Patriots employees have implied that several other Patriots employees may have googled how to jam frequencies and Tom Brady destroyed the computers.

Several former Patriots employees have implied that several other Patriots employees may have googled how to jam frequencies and Tom Brady destroyed the computers. I love sarcasm as much as the next guy but it's downside is when it's read by the low info masses. There is at least 1 web sites that shows all the "cheating" done by every team and the Pats were actually right at the middle of the pack. Therefore all of this nonsense include Spygate is pure and utter bull**** non-sense. Media driven and spoon fed to the hungry losers out there looking for any excuse to come up with other then that they suck. One good thing about all of this, that I hate to admit, is as a Yankee hating Sox fan I have alot more appreciation for the Yankees than before. I still hate them but I appreciate that they too surely went through some unwarranted bull**** and I'm to this day not even aware what that may be.

Well there's a book out from an ex-clubhouse guy claiming the cap'n in the sauna with the catcher making man love and a whole lot of other stuff.

The Bills looked good our opponent for next week . I always liked there defense but I also felt the Colts were a little overrated because they did nothing to address the running game to stop it on defense side. The quarterback to Bills has is a little Russel Wilson in him. Should be good game I wish we were more healthy.
One good thing about the exhibition season is the Pats got to play the three rookie on the offensive line all preseason. So the first game they looked pretty good. Bigger challenge next game in Buffalo.

There's been a lot of chatter about how the Bills will blitz Brady, but I'm skeptical. Ryan's preferred strategy against the Patriots has generally been to flood the underneath zones with coverage defenders rather than using big blitzes. He'll spin the dial and bring guys from unexpected spots (including overload blitzes, zone blitzes, etc.), but I don't think he'll regularly send five or six, like he did versus the Colts. The Patriots' short passing game is basically at the opposite end of the spectrum as the Colts' vertical passing game, and the Bills' defensive strategy will differ accordingly.
