There was a previous thread on building the 2013 Red Sox. This thread is only for the 2013 pitching staff.
Include the following:
-Possible Trades
-Possible Free Agent Acquisitions (with years and salary)
-The Starting Rotation
-The Bullpen
-Other Candidates that can help the rotation or bullpen throughout the year
Possible Trades:
Salty for Gavin Floyd or Jose Quintana (White Sox)
Salty for Justin Masterson (Indians)
Salty and Bailey for Tony Cingrani (Reds) -I want Cingrani, and he has no place for the Reds next year, and he is a top pitching prospect-This is my favorite trade With Aroldis Chapman and the already full 2013 Red's pitching staff, this makes Cingrani more available
Salty for Eury Perez and Christian Garcia (Nationals)
Possible Free Agents:
Brandon McCarthy- 2 yrs, 22 million, with 10 million option for '15.
Kyle Lohse- 2 yrs, 20 million, with 8 million option for '15.
Shaun Marcum- 2 yrs, 16 million
Personally, I probably wouldn't sign a pitcher because there are plenty of internal options
Starting Rotation:
1. Buchholz 2. Lester 3. Doubront 4. Lackey 5. Morales
Bullpen:
Mortensen Aceves Bard (Hopefully back to normal form) Miller Melancon Breslow Tazawa
Other Candidates that can help the rotation or bullpen throughout the year:
Starting: Cingrani (I really want Cingrani), Aceves, Rubby, Webster, Hernandez, Wright, Britton, Workman, Barnes (He is further away though)
Relief: Carpenter, Atchison, Fields, Wilson, Beato, De La Torre

Agree to explore internal options (Webster, DLR) first. But Salty, if he could bring a return of Floyd, would free up Lester for a trade for an OF (Myers, Upton).
Can't see Salty being traded to be second fiddle on the receiving team. That's what he'd be in Cleveland.
Not too familiar with the Nationals catching situation, except for Kurt Suzuki. But your return from the Nats brings an outfielder and a 27 yr old minor league pitcher with two TJ surgeries.
And, I think Cincy wants to develop Devin Mesorosco (sp?), thats why it traded Grandal.

Sign Marcum, McCarthy, or Dempster (in that order). If they'll take 2 years.

If Dempster would take 2 years, I would try and sign him. If he does not work out in the rotation, he can go back to the bullpen.
Lester Buchholz Dempster Doubront Lackey
Morales as a swing starter.

Lester Buchholz Doubront Lackey Liriano
Thats my rotation but giving Morales a shot wouldn't be a bad idea.

Lincecum Lester Buchholz Lackey Doubront
Why does San Fran want to pay over 20M to a guy they left our of their post season rotation? Take his salary off their hands and give them someone like Ranaudo/Stolmy or Britton.

Sign Anibal Sanchez - 6yrs $102
Trade Aceves for whatever you can get for him
Rotation:
Sanchez Lester Buchholz Doubront Lackey
40 Man Roster depth; Webster, De LaRosa, Wright, Britton, Pimentel
Bullpen:
Morales Miller Breslow Uehara Melancon Mortensen Bailey
40 Man Roster Depth; Bard, Tazawa, Carpenter, Beato, Wilson

I understand from reports that Sanchez is looking for 6/90. And you want to go over a hundred?
Also, Tazawa has demonstrated that he's a back of the pen pitcher with 8th inning credentials. You have him as 40 man roster groupie which begins with three LH relievers.

I know Mortensen's strikeout rate ticked up a bit last year and he ended up with a pretty good MLB and AAA ERA, but his walk rate is still pretty bad, his fastball is still very mediocre (tops out in the high 80s in terms of velocity, some decent arm-side run but below-average command), and he only got by by throwing nearly 40% sliders, which is probably not sustainable both for his UCL and in terms of fooling hitters once scouting reports get updated.
He's pretty clearly the most vulnerable of the remaining bullpen arms and I have him off my current bullpen projection, which goes like this:
Bailey Tazawa Uehara Miller Breslow Melancon Morales (Aceves traded, Mortensen traded/DFAed. Top AAA depth includes Bard, Wilson, and Carpenter.)

It should be noted that Aceves has an option remaining. He would have to clear optional assignment waivers, and he probably wouldn't be happy about it, but it's a possibility.

Unless it was to stretch him out for a starting role, I can't possibly see that as a good idea. Aceves was angry enough when he was replaced at closer, he would throw a fit if he was optioned to AAA. At that point, you might as well trade him for pennies on the dollar or DFA him-- the distraction isn't worth it (filing a grievance with the MLBPA, etc).

His beef was with Bobby V. and the way he was handled. Perhaps a kinder, gentler John Farrell can bring out his best.

It is sort of funny that Aceves was upset with Bobby V. Valentine actually showed even more trust in the "wild" one by placing him in a very pressurized situation as our closer.
Now if he had actually done his job consistently, he would have finally gotten an opportunity to make some decent bucks. But no.........he blamed it on someone else. Valentine trusted Aceves toooooo much!

With Dempster signing for 2 years, is our current pitching staff better than the 2012 opening day staff?
Is Dempster an upgrade over Becket?
Is Lackey an upgrade over Bard?
Seems this staff is light at the top of the rotation.
Is there #1 pitcher available that Cherrington could trade for?

With Dempster signing for 2 years, is our current pitching staff better than the 2012 opening day staff? Yes, but that's not saying too much. Is Dempster an upgrade over Becket? Yes, but again, that is not very hard. Is Lackey an upgrade over Bard? Yes, assuming he is marginally better than his 2011 awfulness. Is there #1 pitcher available that Cherrington could trade for? Probably not. This rotation, is not great. Not close to as good as the 2007 or the 2004 Red Sox rotations. It is, in my opinion, an upgrade over 2012, mostly because the 2012 rotation was so horrible to begin with.

I wouldn't say counting on so much as left with as his only choice--trading Xander to improve this year's staff probably doesn't count as a real choice.

I wouldn't say counting on so much as left with as his only choice--trading Xander to improve this year's staff probably doesn't count as a real choice. Less than a decade ago we traded a super hot AA SS prospect for a proven ace and got a world series title out of the deal. Why wouldn't Ben look to duplicate that feat?
